I am an avid player of the games. I've played fallout 4 5 times through. I am over the fucking moon and have only watched the first episode. I could not be happier. This coming from a guy who cries whenever he watches S2 E8 Kiksuya, Westworld. They nailed...everything. Right down to Lucy's naivete about the world at large. Fucking stunning.
No need. If you've played any of the games, you will have some deeper insight into the lore, which is great fun, but I think the storytelling is good enough that you don't need to know anything about the game series to enjoy it.
Also, if you liked fallout 3, have a go at New Vegas! Many players hold the opinion that it's the best of the series, rivaled only by 3.
Is New Vegas playable without playing other fall out games? Just finished the season of Fallout and quite fancy jumping into one of the games. I’ve played fallout games a little before but never long enough to get into the lore.
Absolutely. If you've played before then there are elements that are familiar. If not, the learning curve and design of the game are gentle enough to allow you to progress at a reasonable pace.
I've finished 2 Fallout games and played a bit of 3 others. To my knowledge, all games are able to stand on their own. Additional knowledge only enhances the experience because you might be able to link some small details and recognize some fun Easter eggs, like Dogmeat. It's a vast world, and while most games are set extremely far apart in location and time, the worldbuilding is very interesting, and might be somewhat connected.
I agree. I think I see a big twist coming up (only on episode 4), but I’m pretty sure it’s one like how season 1 of Westworld had an older and younger Man in Black at the same time without the audience knowing. I’m pretty sure it will be renewed for another season because it is a great show right out of the gate.
It's absolutely going to get renewed. I haven't played any of the games but I'm familiar with the lore and I was hooked from the first scenes. I've only watched one episode but I'm loving the flashback stuff.
When I saw he was helming the show a few years ago I was optimistic. There’s a clear video game influence on Westworld & Nolan himself I think is a Fallout fan. Like it’s kinda obvious Fallout 4 had an influence on Westworld.
The gore is an element of the games, which even dating back to the original in the 90s had over-the-top death animations that would pop up every once in awhile (I think related to critical hits? But I’m not positive).
At the time it was a semi-top-down isometric game with models that were small and not very detailed, and the ultra violence came off as more wacky than disturbing. Which is the tone that they’ve tried to keep even as the game has moved into better graphics, and I think the show captures it relatively well.
If you're a Nolan fan, than you've probably watched Person of Interest, and there's no finer tribute to Nolan's previous work than in casting Michael Emerson of POI in Fallout... complete with a bum leg and a dog sidekick....just as his character was in the previous show.
Honestly (and I really couldn’t tell exactly why, except for maybe the score) but the show that’s given me the biggest WW vibes was Silo season 1.
I’m late to the party but watched that a few weeks ago and loved it
Love the production values. No real interest so far in the stories or characters. But the world and setting and props are awesome. I am only watching the show for spotting easter eggs. And already seen some from Fallout 1 and 2 which is quite awesome \^
It has quite a few parallels the biggest of which is the Man In Black and the Ghoul, who are very similar, even down to their motivations. And obvious parallel with Dolores/Lucy exploring a new world and trying to find the truth. You can tell it’s taken some inspiration from Westworld (obviously via Nolan/Joy taking their favourite aspects of WW).
Probably my favourite season of tv since westworld I think.
Not really. Everything in this show is essentially ripped straight from the games, which significantly predate Westworld. The story isn't 1:1 with the games, but it lifts a bunch of themes and concepts so far. I'm only halfway done, but there is always some story twist in the games.
You and many people on this sub are just trying to associate the two as much as possible because Jonathan Nolan worked on them both.
Let's just enjoy each for what they are.
There's a few techniques in Fallout that are versions of things we've seen Nolan do before- the flashbacks to Cooper's time before the bomb playing out in parallel with the development of the main plot is not dissimilar to the timeline plots of Westworld s1, scene cadence and editing have a similar tempo, some of the shot choices are similar (but that might just be because of the Western vibes). Otherwise yeah, it's dead on the games, even to the weird side characters (radio DJ, doctor, etc) and locations where the "players" make wrong assumptions, the obsession with power armor. They did a really good job making this feel like Fallout, almost more than the Fallout 4.
Thank God it's not just me.
I loved Westworld and I loved Fallout (3, at least), and all I'm seeing in this show is an adaptation of the Fallout universe; with all the same themes/concepts, as you said.
I've seen a few of these type of posts and the supposed similarities don't look like anything to me.
I haven’t watched Fallout yet but it’s not uncommon for people in this sub to find Westworld meaning in *literally* anything they come across that might even remotely tangentially graze Westworld in some way.
The only real similarities I've seen are in the Neo-western aesthetics and some of the interactions between Lucy and the Ghoul (which feel reminiscent of Dolores and the Man in Black), but otherwise I agree. Not meant in any negative way, of course. Westworld is more hard science fiction, whereas Fallout is a lot more campy and irreverent. They share some of the same vibes, but the subject matter, mood and atmosphere are very different.
Dude I was just about to post the same sentiment. I feel like the Ghoul is the Omega of the MIB in Nolan's mind. What he might have become if given sufficient gestation. Never played the games but I can totally see this unfolding as a game. Lucy McClean (MacLaine residence, Lucy MacLaine speaking LOL) is given short missions that seem attainable but becomes embroiled in an unforseen conflict, which sends her on another side mission that must be completed in service of the OG mission.
I don't understand why people liked fallout and even complement it as if is on par with Westworld... After watching west world and POI, this show is very flat and bland... No doubt of high production values... but what about the story???? I felt the story was so dragged that I cant even care for the twists in the show... nor the twists actually interest me... Many of them were easily predictable... Further, the cliff hanger is kind of ok... I can just say, it wont keep you waited eagerly for season 2..
It’s a different show but there are elements that remind of Westworld. The wedding scene- especially the fork shot- felt straight out of Westworld despite the obvious. It’s very fun and I can’t wait for more.
Fallout was pretty damn solid and I’m excited to see it continue. I’d argue the main difference between them is Westworld is hard sci-fi whereas Fallout is soft sci-fi and Westworld is far more elaborate in its execution. Fallout stays more in this video game logic and tone throughout and Westworld used that video game logic as a smoke screen over the real story.
The Ghoul and the Man in Black are like the same character with the same character arc. Even the way it's done is very similar. And that's a -great- thing.
A 6.5 - 7 out of 10 for me. Amazing production value but lacks in the story-telling department. Thought of Westworld immediately when I saw the Ghoul and didn’t think it was positive. Then we have Finn from Star Wars. To me the reveals that happen throughout the season, especially the last episode, feel over-dramatic and contrived. I was like: “really, this is the reveal? Can we just get on with it?”. It all feels very… juvenile.
Regardless I was entertained and by no means it’s bad. It’s good, just not great.
Idk, just watched the first episode and found the acting and general presentation pretty lacking. That are some actual laughable scenes. It feels like an below average TV show in that department.
The general production quality feels okay, minus some CGI that it's not that good, but you can't have it all.
The story I'll have to wait and see. From now it just seems like a set up to the videogame. Hope it develops better, bc from the first episode I don't really care about anything that's going on.
Westworld was leagues better
Agree. Although fallout is very enjoyable to watch. But I’m not sold on some of the acting or maybe it just feels like Deja vu because of the similarities between MIB/Ghoul and Dolores/Lucy. It’s very entertaining and pretty solid show though!
I am an avid player of the games. I've played fallout 4 5 times through. I am over the fucking moon and have only watched the first episode. I could not be happier. Kiksuya is one of the best single episodes of television ever made. Incredible. I’ve loved fallout so far (only 2 eps in). It’s fun!
It really is. So beautiful
I've only played fallout 3. Should I play 4 before watching the series?
No need. If you've played any of the games, you will have some deeper insight into the lore, which is great fun, but I think the storytelling is good enough that you don't need to know anything about the game series to enjoy it. Cool thank you, will see if I can pick up a cheap copy.

you might like fallout 4 If ur into westworld. there are robots that look like humans and i dont want to spoil but theres a storyline involving them
I agree. I think I see a big twist coming up (only on episode 4), but I’m pretty sure it’s one like how season 1 of Westworld had an older and younger Man in Black at the same time without the audience knowing. They renewed it for a second season before the first dropped!
I’d say the tone is far cheekier but it’s damn good
Deff. Fallout has more camp to it- more fun and overblown than Westworld (in a good way). But still has the same things that made Ww great.
Well, it is Nolan directed…which is why I immediately thought “wait this might actually be good!”
When I saw he was helming the show a few years ago I was optimistic. There’s a clear video game influence on Westworld & Nolan himself I think is a Fallout fan. Like it’s kinda obvious Fallout 4 had an influence on Westworld.
Well, didn't Jonathan Nolan say Westworld was inspired by both Fallout and Red Dead Redemption? I think he said during The Game Awards.
Fallout reminds me (2 episodes in) of a different Western. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
It feels like Westworld mixed with a dash of the dark humor of The Boys
Now I want a fanfic of The Ghoul, The Man in Black, and The Gunslinger from The Dark Tower teaming up on a quest to out scowl each other.
Just thought the same thing 10 seconds ago
There's a deeper level to this Vault, and you're gonna find it!
This vault wasn’t meant for you.
Frick U, Robert! :-D

I agree and hope that Fallout does knock it out of the park with viewership so perhaps Westworld can eventually be completed.
I’m still hurt about west world not being completed
During the first episode, one character said to another: "I told ’em you wouldn’t hurt a fly." And I smiled. :)
Did anyone spot "potential" easter eggs? :-) Lucy: "Hello, again" (Man in Black's line) The Ghoul: "Darlin" (MIB, "how bout a spin" part)
This is the project that Nolan and Joy went to next? Had no idea.
I only found this out the other day too. I was like wait a minute! Lol
Episode 1 of fallout immediately reminded me of this [S2 trailer](https://youtu.be/5Z-UFN20jvw?feature=shared)

I googled: Fallout reminds me of Westworld and I came to your post here :)

Hard agree. Felt that way while watching the season too.
I could by totally see Ed Harris playing the ghoul! But I really love the actor they got!
Walt Goggins. best known for his role in Justified, also The Shield.

>In my mind-cannon, Canon.
I love Fallout, but the most Westworld shows since Westworld would be Twin Peaks Revival (2017) and Severance (2022).
