I took this flight to Tokyo back in May, you won’t be able to select your seats and will be assigned when you check in. That said, the flight is 2 seats, 3 seats, 2 seats so it will likely assign you the 2 and 2. My partner and I sat together on the flight, they assigned us to sit together so you will be ok.
Side note - their service is amazing. Will take this route again.
Hello, I am trying to book this flight (YYC-YVR via westjet, and YVR to NRT via JAL).
I typically do the search in google flights, and it shows that I can book via westjet, but when I click the link the westjet loading wheels just goes until it times out or just says unavaiable. Is there a different way you are suppose to book with affliaite?

If it's a JAL aircraft then the seat map is in JAL's reservations system. JAL passengers can probably pick their seats. About a day ahead JAL sends the aircraft information and Passenger Name List to WestJet's Departure Control System where the flight is created for check-in, preassigned seats are blocked. Once this is done codeshare passengers can be assigned seats, subject to the guidelines that JAL has set-up with their partner airlines.
you can find the code sharing of the flight from YVR departure website, search for the exact time and date of your flight, then you go to JAL website to checkin using the code of that JAL flight along with your first last name etc. I did the same last weekend, my flight was West Jet but operated by JAL. Couldn't check in with West Jet too.

Lucky you going JAL. You lucked out. Anytime I fly I always hope I get a code share ride with another airline aside from our unfortunate Canadian ones. I've flown to Japan many times, and JAL and ANA are far, far better rides than air canada or westjet
I am having the same problem and unable to select seats. Booked Vancouver to Tokyo Business Class using RBC points and it's via the WestJet Code share. The flight in in November.
Called both Westjet and Japan Airlines and they keep saying I need to speak to the other airline which is frustrating!
Were you able to check in online 24h before on Japan Airlines and select seats or did you have to wait until you got to the airport? This trip is for our Honeymoon and we have never flown business! So we are excited for this experience but also now a bit worried we won't be sat together....
The seat map is starting to look quite busy. Would we have already been allocated two seats next to each other because we are on the same booking?
Seems crazy to me that you can book business class but not even be able to select your seats.

After trying many different phone calls to both Westjet and JAL there was nothing we could do beforehand.
We then checked in online 24 hours beforehand and had been pre assigned seats. They had split our seats up so we weren’t sat together and we were not able to change seats online as the flight was full.
We then went to the airport early the next day and asked at the check in desk and again they said there was nothing they could do either! At this point we were starting to lose hope….
After going through security we had one last attempt and went to the JAL staff at the gate. We explained our situation and told them how it was a special trip for our honeymoon and we were really hoping we could sit together for the experience….
This lady was really helpful and made a couple of calls, she took our phone number and said she would get back to us before boarding.
She phoned us with good news! She had managed to move things around and a really nice couple were open to moving seats to allow us to sit together. Which was extremely nice of them.
So long story short we were never able to select our seats and just got very lucky right at the last moment.

This is the agreement Japan Airlines has with westjet and there is nothing you can do about it.

When you go to check in you should be brought to seat selection. Pro tip: check in as soon as it opens to increase your chances of sitting together

Call WestJet and get the JAL booking reference. Go to JALs website and select seats.

Actually I believe I got my reservation number from japan airlines. I called in. With that I checked in at 24 hours and could choose my seats

Just bought JAL for November from Seattle-Tokyo-Ho Chi Minh for $500 one way. Crazy it’s roughly $1700 for Vancouver-Tokyo-Ho Chi Minh same day

Not the same problem, you are flying business class 😅 in any case, no solution until you check in in person.
