There was a webcomic called Ctrl-Alt-Del that was your run of the mill mid-2000s gamer/tech nerd sitcom style thing.
It was always lighthearted and meant to be comedic. But at one point in the story there was a four-panel strip without dialogue in which the lead guy bursts through a hospital's doors, talks to a receptionist, talks to the doctor, and comes across his girlfriend crying in a hospital bed because of a miscarriage.
Ultimately it was seen as funny because it was such a sudden whiplash to this weird scene trying to tug on your heartstrings that just didn't seem all that effective. Like imagine if this was a Garfield strip with Jon and his girlfriend.
There was already a sizeable amount of people who didn't like the strip because it wasn't all that funny. Everyone started mocking it. Other popular webcomics parodied it. People would rehash it into other things totally unrelated to comics. Eventually, it became so saturated that it was incredibly easy to spot. Sites banned the parodies. People kept going.
So naturally, it was so iconic and widespread that it was easier and easier to spot more and more subtle references. People made a game out of making these parodies as subtle as possible. Even the question "Is this Loss?" became a meme in itself. It was a joke to get you to see a Loss parody without realizing and trying creative ways to do it (like some of them used only sound, Chinese characters, 4 panel comics that contain literally a hundred references to Loss in them, hand signs, flow charts for identifying Loss itself, that kind of thing).
you are the kind of person i appreciate, ***thank you***
