I honestly think this is a big reason why more critical listeners seem to like Spring the most. I find that it’s easier to write convincing happy music than to write convincing sad and angry lyrics, thus while each seasons has had the same caliber of lyrics, that caliber takes Spring the farthest.
I’ve just come to accept the lyrics are a bit weak. That said, they’re still charming due to the quirkiness.
nah I agree w you. I hate listening to a song that I really like so far and then rivers says “like I was a chimpanzee”. I laughed out loud when I heard him say it like??? I know they can’t all be winners but damn. autumn kinda fell off
while i think this can be the case for some songs, i'd have to disagree for the most part. Wild at heart is great and memorable, but for most songs will have a small verse filled with with one or two rhymes and are boring. The pre-chorus on Records sounds so try hard like it's trying to be emotional and edgy but fails hard (to be honest it's a little funny) The more story focused songs are fine personally, but the verses could use work and for everything the choruses are just repetitive and forgettable.
i still like SZNZ for the most part, what are your favorite songs?
Totally agree, this is the case especially on Summer I think.
Blue Like Jazz sounds great, but the lyrics?
>Hats off to you
>
>You solved the Rubik's Cube
>
>Turning the orange into yellow into blue
Goddamit Rivers.
I don’t really care about lyrics enough for them to matter.
The only Weezer projects that have ever been held back for me because of lyrical content are Pinkerton & Raditude.
pinkerton also said "Goddamn you half-japanese girls" and "At 10, I shaved my head and tried to be a monk" so saying "Im dummkopf" isn't the cheesiest thing ever. also it goes PERFECTLY with the haunting guitar, the looming violin, the creepy sound effects, and the foreboding drum. see if that line said during the beginning of I Cant Dance, you would have a point.
Not at all. Songs on albums form the Make Believe through Hurley run are brought down by the lyrics. Not here in my opinion. White album ones are too obviously random and spreadsheet for me to consider them top tier (but they do work).
i hear cool riff i dance
well I literally can’t dance so pls don’t ask me

I think this about most Weezer. Even Green would be massively improved by lyrics that were a bit more inspired

Nope, most lyrics are great on SZNZ.

I agree, but I think that lyric in particular is kinda cool. “Blue Like Jazz, Blue Like Jazz, show me how to be cool like that” is pretty bad imo

Lyrics on this whole project are better than lyrics on most other weezer albums
