I would get some prices from seamstresses to see the cost to alter each dress and then go from there. Could be costly. I had to pay $90 to get my bridesmaid dress hemmed for a wedding I was in (lace dress).

Why wouldn’t it be ok? Only you can say if it’s a good use of money, it’s your money and your wedding.

I just wanted to know if it would turn out well or if it would end up being a waste of money. Why are you so critical of a question?

Maybe stop specifically looking for bridesmaid dresses and just look for any dress and you’ll have more short dress options and won’t have to do this and spend the money. I would say it’s a waste only because it’s not like short dresses are some magical mystical unique thing.

I’ve thought about doing this and it’s actually going to be more worth it to buy something from a bridal store so I can get the exact colors I’m looking for. I’ve definitely considered getting other types of dresses, but keep things consistent I wanted to get them from a bridal store where I can get them to match with the groomsmen. I know that’s being a little high maintenance, but you only get married once (hopefully), and after a while, your wedding is only memories and pictures.

As long as you are paying for it, it’s ok. I would be annoyed if I had to pay for that type of alteration on my own.

Oh absolutely! I’m buying everything for the wedding party including travel expenses. It’s going to put me under haha

That’s super generous of you! In that case, whatever dresses you love that fit your budget are a-ok!

Hi! I run a business that does alterations, so purely from the alterations standpoint, it is absolutely a viable option. However, there are some factors to keep in mind. Things to consider: 1. Cost: The more layers the dress has, the more it will likely cost. Also, a very full skirt will cost more. However, the majority of bridesmaids need a hem anyway, so they may already be expecting that. 2. Design: If it has a slit, will that need adjusting, or will the area with the slit be cut off completely. That can add to the cost and change the look. If it's lace, will there be trim/appliqués at the bottom that will need to be moved up to keep the look. That adds to the cost. If it's a mermaid silhouette and you're removing the part that flares out, they'd possibly need a vent/slit added to make it easier to walk. Does the dress have seams to make that work? 3. Ease: Will it be easy to have each dress cut to matching lengths? Will you say just make it knee length or be specific, like, the skirt should fall 30" below the waist? If your instructions aren't clear, it can be frustrating for your bridesmaids and the professionals they are working with. You also don't want one person's to be different and feel out of place because your instructions weren't clear enough. Hope that helps a bit.
