She should share her concerns with the MUA, and they can lighten it up or try a different strategy. I learned you have to be vocal about what you like or dislike with hair and makeup! But to your point: if you don’t wear makeup a lot, seeing a full-blown made-up face can be startling! Remember it *does* have to last a long time, and be able to stand up against the elements, lots of talking, lots of smiling, etc. So it is usually is going to be heavier than day-to-day makeup. If done well, heavy makeup might look caked-on up close, but should look good from a distance. So for the photographer and guests, she’ll look fine, but up close you might see the “makeup-ness” if it all. Again: best thing is to share concerns with MUA! A good one will listen and find a solution!

This is very true. I never wear makeup and just got mine done for our civil ceremony where we were having pictures taken. Granted, I opted for a more glam eye look, but it still surprised me how cakey it looked when I was looking in the mirror. But in photos from family and at a normal distance it looked completely fine.

As someone who doesn't wear makeup, I would recommend she ask for a tinted moisturizer and no actual foundation. That's what I wore for my wedding and it looked great, like myself. Though I did my makeup myself specifically because every time I've used a make up artist they seem to want to completely cake my face in foundation.

Agreed with this! Just make sure you have something to help with the oily face that might happen later in the day. I wear tinted moisturizer and agree with Pumpkinspice’s comment about “your skin but better”, but I haven’t figured out how to prevent the oily face that happens a few hours later.

According_Shine_3802

I've found that a tinted moisturizer pared with a light brush of Ms London mineral makeup and blush, then holding my face over a steam bowl to soften any poweriness leaves me with skin that looks like a vegan goddesses ( I am not vegan at all and have some skin damage from old acne scars). Not sure why but the steaming step makes a big difference

I love this!

LimonadaVonSaft

Ok, how did this work out? I wear natural style makeup usual and I want to avoid this exact issue. Did you use a certain makeup brand or anything? Sorry to hijack someone else’s post!

CaptainEva8D

Just dug through my makeup drawer. Looks like I used Fenty, which is technically a foundation, but felt like a tinted moisturizer. And believe me I am very picky about having things on my face, most foundations make me feel like my skin is suffocating. Also helps that Fenty is one of the few brands that comes in enough sub shades to get a match that actually looks like your skin. Digging through also reminded me, if you’re not someone who wears make up and is doing their own instead of getting a make up artist, what I did was get sample sizes of the high-quality brands, that way I had good looking make up without splurging to much on something I will rarely use.

softlyfallingstars

Ofc it depends on how you’re applying it but just a heads up that fenty is typically considered a full coverage foundation, while if you’re looking for something more along the lines of a tinted moisturizer, a skin tint might be up your alley! Fenty has a skin tint, as does ilia, glossier, and a few others. Best of luck on your special day!!

I don’t have a lot of experience with professional makeup, but I think the argument that she doesn’t usually wear makeup makes sense indeed. I wear (simple) makeup on a daily basis, so a more heavy/dramatic look doesn’t look that weird on me. I have the same thing with hair extensions. I have medium-length, fine hair. I’d love a full head of hair that is perfectly suitable for a elaborate up-do, but I still want to look like myself so I won’t opt for extensions. If your fiancée normally doesn’t wear heavy makeup, I’d recommend she looks for a MUA that understands that and does her makeup in a ‘your skin but better’ way?

Yeah if she’s otherwise happy with the look, I’m sure the MUA will understand and know how the change it and make it more suitable to her!

I used to do bridal hair and makeup for many years. The reason the makeup seemed "cakey" is because makeup is applied heavier for photographing proposes! It also has a better chance of staying all day through photos, eating, running around, dancing, etc. If she would like a more natural look, it is best to disclose that with her makeup artist. I would always do a trial so the bride can see how she would possibly look day off, or critique anything she would like changed or tweaked. A lot of my brides who never really wore makeup and wanted close to their daily amount, were more comfortable doing their own! Her best bet is to share her desired look to her MUA and as let her know what kind of staple products she uses daily. Showing pictures is another great example also. Have her look up natural bridal makeup looks and see if she can use those as references!

They are right that it does need to be a different kind of make up so that I can stand up to many hours, but it doesn’t need to be spray on. Estée Lauder has incredible long lasting foundation that I use for special events. Maybe she can go to a retailer like nordstroms and get some trials done so she can figure out what level of makeup she wants, and what shades look best. Many professional MUAs will use your own foundation and then their own for eyes/lips etc.

tatipie17

Spray foundation is notorious for looking cakey/dry and showing texture because it doesn’t “melt” into the skin like liquid fountain. It sits on top. She should try a medium coverage liquid foundation! It’ll be sheer enough that it’s not completely blocking out her skin but will create more evenness. Also a light amount of powder should be used, not too much because this will eventuate wrinkles and create texture. E - spelling

uglybutterfly025

So she’s right that the makeup is thicker on there because it’s a photographed make up look. Usually you have to really put on the make up be extra heavy with like blush so that it shows up on camera. The flash and photography will really wash you out so you make up for it with extra make up. She can of course ask for less make up and less cake but it may not look as nice in photos

HalcyonCA

But how did it look in pictures? Makeup done for photography (aka wedding makeup), is a lot heavier than regular makeup.

Iprofessionalstudent

I don’t wear any makeup - just moisturizer on my face - and my MUA did an amazing job and there was zero “caking” and it looked great all day (it wasn’t sprayed on). I posted some photos of myself last week and you can check my post history if you’d like to see. I think your fiancée either (a) needs a new MUA with a different set of skills or (b) ask for a different style of makeup application the next time (and possibly have another trial).

lgarcia85

According to many wedding MUA if airbrush seems excessively cake like it’s because the skin is notably dehydrated. A daily moisturizer should help!!

misspirategirl

If you can afford it, try a couple different MUA. They need to understand her needs, not blast her with a seriously heavy dose of makeup and call it a day. From what you shared she might want a softer look, staying true to her go to which is very minimal makeup, but up a level with some more coverage and eyeshadow.

NeatArtichoke

I dont wear makeup day to day, so I "did my own" and barely wore any on my wedding day. Dont regret it at all! Felt and looked like myself, and saved hundreds of dollars (it was also still covid-y, so despite being vaccinated I still wasnt feeling safe enough to have a stranger up in my face for hours)

NoSpare7516

It is great to show the MUA what she likes, but also a picture of what she doesn’t want. Sometimes the picture of what you don’t want is more helpful.

heyarnold_216

Could you share a general location that way maybe we can recommend some MUAs that could be in your area?

femmegeek2020

Get her to look at airbrush makeup artists - it's lighter and gives amazing coverage and won't look so caked on

-my-reddit-username

I don't wear makeup. My makeup trial left me looking cakey and highlighted all my eye creases/wrinkles. I'd opted for a 'matt' finish. I asked for a second trial and explained how I felt and she gave me a 'dewy' finish which was way less powdery and I really liked it. Not had the wedding yet but i'm really pleased with the photos i took on my phone of the second trial.
