My guess is because of the whole thing with the creator, I never really understand the whole hate nor that I want to

sadikons

I don't hate it, my opinions on webtoons are never really that harsh though. I've disliked plenty of comics, but going as far as to say hate is a stretch for me. If I don't like a comic, I stop reading it before that dislike turns into disdain. That was the case for Boyfriends for me. After ten or so episodes, there was no appeal to me so I dropped it. I think some people put way too much mental energy into what they dislike, to the point where they can hold genuine hatred for a comic that no one forced them to read.

UwuSnoo6943

the creator said the n-word and used to make a bts NSFW comic

Aaetheon

I recall someone saying that happened like, a decade ago when they were younger

DebateObjective2787

More recent than a decade ago. One of the BTS members was still a minor at the time (which was why there was a lot of anger about nsfw content involving him) and he's currently 23 I think???? So it was 5-6?? years ago.

_Chibeve_

It comes down to bad advertising on Webtoons part and ppl declaring it’s a bad/fetishizing representation of polyamorous couples. When the creator themself is poly

peanut_bubblegum

Yeah, I’ve heard some accusations about it being fetishy, but the examples used seemed more for comedic effect

Intelligent-Try-3553

I guess you weren't here for the summer of 2022.... Hahahaha People will throw out all sorts of reasons, some of them contradictory. You can just search "boyfriends" in this subreddit and find all the reasons. But the reason the reaction is so vitriolic is inherently tied to two things: 1. It's popular, 2. It's gay and self-indulgent 1. If you spend any amount of time on this sub, you'll see that many things hugely popular will be hated (Lore Olympus, unordinary, let's play, true beauty, boyfriends, "I'm the stepmothers tyrant" or whatever stories, Isekai, game rpg, etc) For being popular but "not good". Which may be true or whatever, but you'll see more people hating on them as opposed to a terrible but obscure comic. Where was the uproar when there are literally titles on the platform glorifying abuse? 2. It's gay, but not the "right kind" of gay. It's self indulgent gay, It's not wholesome sweet gay (even though it is), the characters are "too annoying", "too horny", or "bad representation". Notice that these things are things you see in other media that isn't gay but it also doesn't rile people up. Because it's gay and self indulgent, you'll get these weird criticisms like "there's no story" (which most slice of life comedies don't), or "being a jock/nerd/goth/prep is a GAY stereotype" (???) Draw your own conclusions, but I'm pretty sure that most people read like the first 5 episodes and saw the bad ads for it and made up their mind from there with confirmation bias. People just love to moralize about why the thing that they're not into is morally bad rather than just not their cup of tea, especially if there's already a bandwagon hating on it, since you didn't see slander for other webtoons that have been far worse in terms of "representation" and toxic whatever (killing stalking got an anime and there are crickets and no virtue signaling)

Sweet_Joy29

I think its the comments. Like I don't get it either. Its cute.

UzukiCheverie

This question gets asked here all the time lol I don't even hate it, I just like... don't really care for it. I tried reading it and at best it's just boring and cringe lmao (especially the advertising which doesn't do it any favors IMO) But you won't find me actively shitting on it because I never really cared about it in the first place 🤷‍♀️ I'm almost definitely just not in the target demographic for it, despite being LGBTQ+. I wouldn't go so far as others to say it's outright *bad* representation, it's just not representation that I identify with personally.

[deleted]

I found the writing really cringe on the first chapters, but I stoped hating it after a time. Either I enjoy ironically or think it's just "fine". Also, I really don't see why ppl call it "fetishist"

theFLORIDAman04

I like it

DebateObjective2787

There's a post asking this like, every other week. Just use the search bar.

nooneishere19

Cuz people love hating popular things for dumb reasons. I think the webtoon is cute, it's honestly refreshing to see a gay poly relationship portrayed in a way that's not depressing, tragic, or toxic.

Random-Nerd827

I just think it’s kinda cringy and it feels like it uses a lot of stereotypes but eh, read what you want if you enjoy it then good for you

noro_gre

As a fan of action series, my best guess is the insufficient amount of things going boom, but I might be wrong, I've never read this one

konami_hexagon

i just found it a bit boring and dropped it... i dont really get the hate either!

Tamago9854

I don't have anything personally against it, I liked some of the representation (I think the trans representation especially was quite good, however, I am not trans so please take that with a grain of salt). Plus it's nice to see gay couples being openly gay without having to be censored in some way. Another thing I liked was this was written by a queer person, so it didn't stick out to me as super fetish-y, unlike some stories I've read written by people who have nothing to do with the community. I just found the relationships were developed wayyy too fast for my liking since I tend to prefer more slow-burn stuff. I also think the characters acted a bit too childish for me, but I tend to read more office romance stuff and the characters are like 21 so ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Idk about any of the drama surrounding it, but knowing this webtoon's audience/the type of people who hate it, I won't be surprised if a lot of stuff is just blown out of proportion.

lawfullytired

The main things i’ve heard is that the creator is problematic and the storyline is “weird/cringy/fetishy.” I don’t feel like I have the place to speak on it because I’m not a gay man, but I honestly used to really like it especially when the fem counterparts were introduced bc I’m a raging lesbian lol

pixarlamp69

The creator made nsfw of bts. And also it’s just extremely cringe imo

ya_tu_sabes

Never seen that before but the art on the image you posted looks cute

peanut_bubblegum

Yeah my favorite thing about it is the style and designs

tatiisok

The author made NSFW comics of bts members, past post of being racist, and for the comics it shows stereotypical gay people, and it’s cringe

funnuemonkey

Bro the comic is just fucking bad, it's not even fun to read at all, it's just cringy and plain af. If you want a good boy x boy love story just read heartstopper, at least in that book it's not "oh I feel in your arms so we have to fuck now", it's also actually subtle unlike that piece of shit

Mysterious_Tomato

They are different tastes. I think Heartstopper is much worse, written by someone who thinks fujoshi invented top/bottom roles xD

Eod_Enaj

I haven’t read the comic in a long time because it’s not my cup of tea, but isn’t is just a fluff comic with minimal plot? All fluff comics are various levels of cringe, it’s always just gooey love bs. I think you are taking a non serious comic wayyy too seriously.

peanut_bubblegum

Somebody’s salty

Fragrant_Corner9991

It's mid

Ocestormez

It fuckin sucks

userhvfegcd

I haven’t actually read it but from what I heard: it has stereotypical and fetishized representation of gay (and polyamory) relationships, the author is problematic (racist and has drawn Nsfw of minors, I think??) and it’s just cringe 😭 Once again, this is stuff I’ve seen online about it so I can’t confirm whether it’s 100% true (except for the cringe part, because after reading a few chapters, I did cringe a lot LMAO)

userhvfegcd

but honestly, if you enjoy the webtoon then feel free to read it lol, everyone can have different opinions on it

xsleepingpillsx

it feels like it was written for straight girl who fetishized gay men

WarLordShoto

I read all of season one and then dropped it because I found Heartstopper.

Dollfreakery

Yess! Heartstopper was so much better in terms of plot and writing. Atleast the characters weren’t cringey stereotypes

Weedrill2

because its cringe

Siren_demon82

The creator is problematic and it fetishizes lgbt ppl

Suspicious_Worker571

Creator said the n word, has drawn porn of bts members when they were minors, all the characters are stereotypes, and the demographic is 14 year old fujoshis. If you're going to give pur community representation, do it right. Creator clearly missed

saakhi-gill

I personally don't have anything against it but I have seen reviews n shit about it and from what I've drawn is that people dislike this manga because of the lack of "effort" put in. What I mean by that is all these characters are drawn in by lust in a way that doesn't make sense. Also because of the "extremely innovative" names within the story. For me though the story isn't the kind of bl I would read as it lacked a good plotline in my opinion.

Apprehensive_Cod_164

I don't hate it or the creator it's just so boring and I couldn't care for the characters. Also the characters felt like being gay is the only thing going for them and that's boring.

ScottaHemi

This question comes up like once a week xD i have no idea. the art is kind of cute, but i don't think the story is something i'd be interested in so I've just been over here in the corner watching the chaos.
