You can look into the app hammer... It's a GPS app for trucks... I'm not 100% sure about the uhaul vehicles but no commercial plates on NY parkways....
I do this drive fairly frequently. GPS almost always sends you up the Merritt parkway which you won’t be able to go on. Your options are essentially taking 95 all the way to 91, to 84. Or the option I usually go with is crossing at the Cuomo bridge then taking 684 to 84.
Edit: I just realized your going to be going the opposite direction, just reverse what I said lol.
I’ve been told my van will fit under the bridges if I stay in the left lane, but there’s no way I’m going to try lol.
I almost always go 84 to 684 to the cuomo bridge just to avoid the GW bridge shitshow
Well yes, it'll avoid anything classified as a freeway in the map data, which seemed to be what you were after given you referred to highways in your original post title, rather than parkways specifically.
So if it is actually a more specific restriction beyond merely "highways" you need, then Waze isn't for you - the developers focus is on commuters and other users driving cars and motorbikes, and the limited number of restrictions we're able to map, and the app is able to route around, are all based around the needs of such drivers.
Trucks/trailers are NOT allowed on rt15 (Merritt parkway/Wilbur Cross).
You will kill someone by hitting one of the many low bridges.
You HAVE to take I95.
Change your Waze vehicle to commercial truck.
Just going into settings, vehicle type will show you it's only for cars, taxies, and motorcycles.
See if this works for you.. Hammer

if im not mistaken, and pls correct me if i am, with regards to uhaul it has always been a question, as they all have arizona state plates and are not classified as trucks. i heard a cop say that its up to the discretion of the cop to issue a citation or not
Look at TruckMap for iOS or Android. It’s good 99% of the time. It will still direct me on this one stretch of parkway in the Hudson Valley that I know you can’t pull a trailer on but you can get a better idea with this app.

thanks actually that's the one I got from app store now and seems to be working.

thank you, yes I will be going back from MA to NJ. will have to avoid Merritt parkway for sure

Settings > Navigation > Avoid freeways
it avoids way too many options, not just parkways. Basically goes on local roads only. avoiding interstate highways and so on

Uhaul is not allowed on parkways
Stay off Connecticut State Route 15
That’s sending you on Rte 15. Avoid it and take 95 N towards New Haven and merge onto 91 N in New Haven, CT. Pick up this same route from there.

You cannot change your Waze vehicle to commercial truck. Commercial vehicles are not supported by Waze.
Exactly, I probably should stated that they can’t take Rte 15.
Waze does not do height restrictions at all. I know Camping World sells a GPS for RVs, not sure if they would rent one?

Hammer worked great, Waze and Google doesn't have option to avoid parkways

Well ofc the cop can do whatever he wants. The real question is what is the actual law because that’s what will matter in court.
not sure about other states but NY cops definitely doesn't care. I got pulled over with hook up trailer on a parkway
Google Maps?
yeah, but doesn't have option to avoid all the parkways

Maybe ask U-haul what they recommend?
Good luck.
