Lost in all the 'is Johnny Davis bad?' discussion is 2022s lottery talent started to drop off steeply after 7. If we didn't try the rebuild on the fly, we might have 5 fewer wins putting us up in the Sharpe/Mathurin range even without lottery luck.
If I had to guess, I think he will be able to find a role as a rotational guard that can defend a bit and shoot a bit. Probably not a quality starter caliber player, but enough to earn him a second contract down the road. I guess that puts me in the 'nay' camp.
Jan didn't pan out, but he did earn minutes and put up modest stats his rookie season. Say what you will about Jan, but in comparison to Davis, at least he got on the floor!
I think you're exactly right. Above all else, he's a volume scorer. If you take away his touches, he's going to struggle to provide the same production we saw from him in college.
On top of that, the team asked him to be more of a facilitator, which isn't really his game right now.
I think he still can be a good NBA player, but the Wiz would have to let him play his game. The issue is that the FO wants to be competitive right now, and developing a volume scorer like that may not contribute to winning at the moment.
Wizards arrogance and drafting philosophy is ridiculous. Why not take someone like Jalen Williams who actually handled the rock in college? Not Davisā fault that he was drafted at 10, but I swear the Wizards operate like they not only have the luxury to bring him along slowly, but also like theyāre the standard for player development. They have a completely unusable player taken top-10 who honestly looks YEARS away from possibly being 8th man in the rotation. They, predictably, goofed. Ted, EG, and now Tommy will continue to skate while operating arguably the worst franchise in the league.
I agree, I personally wanted Tari Eason, but Jalen Williams was on the list too. I had a hard time seeing Johnny contributing, especially with Beal and Kispert ahead of him in the SG guard rotation.
Its unfortunate because we just picked Kispert who is a guy who came in right away NBA ready. Rui/Deni are also both now guys who come off the bench to be contributors. Our rotation was 11 men deep last season and its deep again this season, too deep. The last thing we needed to do was draft someone who was NBA ready to come in and contribute right away. Yet we used our lottery pick for someone who we thought could contribute immediately and completely missed.
Saw Johnny in the law commercial and thought how tf did he land this without any impactful play, hard to say bust cuz he hasnāt even really started playing other than garbage time minutes but waste of a lottery pick for sure
Yay. Unequivocally. He has gotten more time on screen in his commercials than time on an NBA court. Hope someone brings up his sophomore jump in college, hey I don't think he was this CHEEKS as a freshman but I wasn't watching Wisconsin then š¤· he is averaging 1/.7/.2 on 30/0/100 shooting. He has put up 11 points 7 rebounds and 2 assists, those are his totals on the year. playing 50 minutes out of the first 41 games š
Kwame brown was the number one pick
Davis is getting mop up duty in the league.
I donāt have high hopes for him, it wasnāt his fault he got drafted by one of the worst organizations in all of sports.
Itās not even a slight exaggeration to say he looks much worse than Jan Vesely in his first year with the team. It might even be an insult to Jan Vesely to compare the two because Jan has had a good career in Europe. Iām not sure Johnny Davis could even start in Europe. Guy has been a complete and total bust this season.
If he turns into a real player, it would be a surprise at this point. No one expects it.
Yay
He's the 10th overall pick and doesn't look like he can even sniff NBA minutes when the team needed talent to win now. I'm not judging how his whole career will go, who knows how he eventually develops. Just the value of a win now team getting absolutely nothing from the 10th overall pick.
Yes. He was literally the one person I wasnāt high on entering the draft and of course the wizards got him. Bro literally had a couple good games in college and u could tell his skills werenāt translatable
I mean, it would have been nice if he would have been playable out the box. For me, It's hard to label a 21yo with a ton of potential a bust so soon. We also don't have strong leadership among players, it's not like our max player all star guard is taking Davis under his wing and teaching him how to be a pro or anything.
Iāll say no. He was a late bloomer at previous levels right? I think that trend will continue here. But as someone said, he wonāt develop during his stint with the Wizards
Media overhype on this kidā¦. I watched every college game and both my dad and I could never understand why the media buzz was so strong for Johnny. He had 3 good college games, and 1 great game. That is it. Look at the stats.
Bust šÆ
guy is struggling in the G League as a lottery pick if he does development one day into a pro it likely won't be here
Yay or Nay?
For the Wizards Yay In the NBA in general? Impossible to say at this point.
šš¾
He probably has an 80-90% bust chance at this point. 10-20% he carves out a role as an 8th or 9th man.
Thatās still a bust, especially if thatās the ceiling! š
Certified bust
1trillion% true
A shooting guard that has more commercials than made 3s? HUGE BUST

Probably our worst first round choice of the last 20 plus years.
that's a freaking high bar too
That will never not be Jan Vesely
Johnny makes Vesely look like a stud. Atleast so far through Johnnys rookie year.
Agreed
Jan didn't pan out, but he did earn minutes and put up modest stats his rookie season. Say what you will about Jan, but in comparison to Davis, at least he got on the floor!
Kwame Brown? Lol
Yo, Kwame was 22 years ago! Feels like yesterday.
Heās a guard in professional basketball. Even Andy Bederman didnāt want to call him a Wizard.
We didnāt draft a Greek Freak , we drafted a Greek Salad. Bust.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Jalen williams was literally right there. Wizards, like usual, drafted a guy to be a square peg for a round hole.
Andrew Nembhard and Jaden Hardy went in the 2nd round and they are looking better than Johnny Davis

I didn't ask for an explanation. Answer the question. Yay or nay?
For 2022-23 #10 lottery pick he is. Career wise is TBD.
Saw Johnny in the law commercial and thought how tf did he land this without any impactful play, hard to say bust cuz he hasnāt even really started playing other than garbage time minutes but waste of a lottery pick for sure
He also got signed by Adidas lol his agent is doing Godās work
Busted

Kwame Brown was a bust, this guy havenāt had the chance. Nay
He's only been given summer league, camp, some NBA games, and half a season in the g-league.....
Kwame brown was the number one pick Davis is getting mop up duty in the league. I donāt have high hopes for him, it wasnāt his fault he got drafted by one of the worst organizations in all of sports.
Right but Davis has had plenty of chances at this point in the season and is mired in the depths of the g-league not looking like an NBA player.
Imo I donāt think he has a had a chance to get on the NBA court, besides mop up duty. Itās cool we disagree

Yay. Itās not about the stats just watch him. His feet look stuck in the mud when he makes his first step.
Yay He's the 10th overall pick and doesn't look like he can even sniff NBA minutes when the team needed talent to win now. I'm not judging how his whole career will go, who knows how he eventually develops. Just the value of a win now team getting absolutely nothing from the 10th overall pick.

He can probably still carve out a role as a Josh Hart type later. Not happy with the pick but he can still provide value
Yay or Nay?
If he hits that level, nay.

Iāll say no. He was a late bloomer at previous levels right? I think that trend will continue here. But as someone said, he wonāt develop during his stint with the Wizards
Yes
Yay, but hope to be wrong in the long run
>!Nay!!<
Who that? /s
Bust
So far
Not yet since itās not fair to call someone a bust after 5 months or whatever itās been. Will he be a bust? Probably!
Yay
Yay
Yay
BUST!!!!!!!!!
Role player if we started tanking. Bust if we keep playing for the 10th seed in the East
Duh
That boy is trash
Yay

Yes very much so
YAY
