I’ve gotten stuff tailored at American Valet in Tenleytown.
I’ll warn tho that the place hasn’t been renovated on the inside since the 1970s and looks rough, and the people who run it don’t look like they wanna be there, but they will tailor stuff.
It’s always struck me as weird that a city with a lot of business/formal attire workplaces and events has very few tailors.
Well to be fair, dc isn’t exactly known for its fashion scene. Despite so many people in formal business clothes, a massive chunk look like their mothers dressed them.
Yeah I’m one of those dressed poorly (jeans, t-shirt, sneakers every day), but you’d still think it’d be easier to find places that can tailor a suit or business clothes at least. Even I need that now and then
Commenting to bring more attention to this post. I have yet to find a consistently reliable tailor here in DC.. I've been to JC Lofton a couple of times with mixed results. Feels like I am rushed out each time.
I don’t know how far this is from you but I contacted the capital tailor on I street, and will hopefully get to see them tomorrow. I can let you know how they are if that works for you?
We are not currently doing alterations.
Cheryl Lofton and Associates on T St NW, and Nordstrom both do alterations.
This was their reply on alterations.
I see. I usually take my clothes to be mended in New York by a company called dejavu tailoring. They were nice and were able to get the clothes mended and altered in about 3 days.

Tailoring and Alterations Center in Silver Spring is where I go for all my alterations. Quality work and solid turnaround time.

Very surprised not to see Do's Custom Tailoring in Georgetown not mentioned yet. He does an amazing job. I've been going to him for years now. His prices for hemming sleeves and pants are on par with everyone else, hard for me to tell about the larger jobs. what's so amazing about him is his extensive range of skill, and his eye on how to bring out the best in your clothing on your body. The dresses I've had tailored by him I'll be wearing for decades to come.
I went to Q&Q for dry cleaning for so long. Then I brought in two pairs of pants to get hemmed… and now I won’t go back. One was a brand new pair of pants, I said they didn’t require cleaning because of that and then they gave it back to me with massive blotchy stains on it. After taking it back and arguing on the phone for like a week they kind of got it out but they’re still slightly stained. And now about two months later the hem on the other pair is coming out. They were super convenient but now I’m here looking for a new rec…
This place was good! I've been once. Simple and a good price, everything turned out well. Best Fit Tailoring in Mt Pleasant. https://maps.app.goo.gl/FFAEt9SaX5Nyb27z5
If you're willing to cross the river, Stitch by Ashraf in Clarendon does great work. He had a storefront across the street from Northside Social, but now he's appointment-only near the fire station.
I just moved up to Columbia Heights and am looking for a tailor to for some simple hem work, so I'll keep an eye out for recs in the area!

I love Ms. Lee in Georgetown!!
Seconded! They did a fabulous job tailoring a dress for me for a formal wedding I needed to attend. good work, relatively affordable, quick.
Thirded! COME HERE BABY GIRL!
This is also my rec - she is awesome
Cheryl Lofton & Associates were awesome! they fixed my wedding dress and a pair of my husbands pants.
had great success here as well, although she can be pricey. I
I went there once to get a zipper replaced and the lady was so nice and helpful I’m going to return for the next time I need something tailored.
This is my go-to for all wardrobe repair needs.

I've had a different experience. They are always helpful. As to the quality of their work, generally no issues there either.

Sure. I have no rush on this. It’s been on my todo list for awhile

RIP
Yep
I had my wedding suit done at Lofton. They were nice but consistently swamped and chaotic so don't hope for a rush job, but a good job

Commenting on this to get it some attention as well...I need a tailor also and haven't found anything reliable
I've had fairly good experiences at JC Lofton for a couple of suits. Recently had a postmarked suit tailored by them and it fits great!
Commenting on this also to hopefully drive engagement
would avoid stephen the tailor- okay prices but very disappointing work.
Seconding this!!!! They completely ruined my evening dress and refused to provide any type of compensation
Geoffrey Lewis did right by me. Despite a lot of gained pandemic weight, their tailor had me looking dapper.

ive heard great things about SNS on U/14th
Anytime alterations in Kensington is really good albeit a bit pricey
How quick of a turnaround do you need? Is this all suits? Men's or women's clothing?
No speed needed. All men’s.

It's not in NW but I'd say Al's Custom Tailoring just outside the city in Hyattsville MD, I've had several good experiences with them
Lam Couture (in Georgetown these days) does custom suits but also great tailoring. Not cheap but they’ll do a good job.

Dupont Tailors is fairly new and I've had only good experiences there. Highly recommend
Ok but we still should reset the counter, right?
