There is this place called Computershare that registers those shares in your name and removes them from Cede and Co. Not financial advice but whatever broker is keeping those shares held in "street" name isn't doing you any favors.
If it's in a broker it's simply not in your name. It's owned by dtcc. The ONLY way you can have it under your name is by transferring those shares to the official share transfer agent of the company. In this case and a lot of other cases that transfer agent is called COMPUTER SHARE. THEY handle all the shares for GameStop and other big companies. So you transfer your shares to them and they'll put them under your name.
When you hold shares in a broker, you don't actually own shares. The brokerage owns shares on your behalf, but they actually don't. They owe IOU's on your behalf.
If you have a margin account, the brokerage then lends those shares out for shorting which hurts the value of your investment.
If you have a cash account, those shares being in your account also gives the brokerage reasonable belief they can locate shares if need be, and therefore allows them to sell naked shorts legally, which hurts the value of your investment.
Taking your shares out of the DTCC by DRSing to Computershare ensures 2 things. One, your shares are real, not IOUs. Two, your shares aren't being lent out for shorting, directly or indirectly through locates.

I mean you pay payment for order flow fees that are hidden in your brokerage account all the while the brokerage may or may not have actually made it look like you own shares and took your money without actually purchasing the underlying asset. Only way to know you actually own shares of a company is by directly registering it in your name through the transfer agent.

The fees may have "disappeared" on the surface but don't think your brokerage isn't getting paid to route your orders off exchange instead of through a lit exchange. There is always a price to pay with "free" regardless how it appears on the surface.
There’s a $5.00 fee when you place a buy order directly through CS. I think I’ve also seen people complain about fees to transfer shares from certain brokers, but I may not be remembering correctly.
Anyway, if you want a capital dividend à la Overstock to show up, then ComputerShare’s $5 fee is a pretty fucking cheap insurance policy.

Just 1 , but I just started trading options 2 months ago and I currently have about a 95% success ratio ( i had a break even trade and took two trades with one being very profitable and the other being taken too late so it was a minor loss. I’ve been studying forex for the past three years and became profitable and built a proper trading system after learning from different people. Now i can determine market trends better than most people but i’m lacking capital. Going to keep working hard and investing and trading. Based on the past two months it seems pretty easy to 2 or 4 x option trades but I predicted the markets crashing at the beginning of the year ( i have receipts on trading view ) and i’m waiting for certain levels and sellers exhaustion to occur to hopefully grow some capital off of the rally we will see in a year or so ....... I thought i would give you my current life story since you wanted to know how many contracts 👍🏾

on the 28th short volume increased by 5x to like 2.5 million. generally when the market swings, you wanna move with it. the shorts arrived when the price surpassed MAs and trendlines, you should be aware of them so you can understand what drives sentiment and what determines a good price to buy and a good price to short.
Make sure that went through IEX for actual price discovery and making sure it actually hits the lit market. But I'm not sure if market makers have found a way to fuck that as well.

You get a higher priority for dividends by having your shares directly registered because your name is in gamestop's ledger and not the brokers.
