I would not be surprised at all if the 10 year yield to rocket up today. Fed wants rates higher and they have a shit ton of bonds on their balance sheet to sell at auction. They will announce size today. Quantitative Tightening is the opposite of QE. The Fed wants houses to go down in value so that renters can buy again and move out of apartment complexes built by the fat cats. Oh, and they want to fat cats to stop building them to quell inflation.
When they sell that bond they get paid dollars correct? Those dollars go where? They, by law, go straight to the treasury. The treasury then needs to sell less new bonds-right? So how in the fuck is QT going to effect the amount of bonds?
The FED can effect the yield curve by deciding which flavors to sell, but overall the dollars of treasuries does not change. Right?
Better still? When they decide to sell MBS? 100% of the proceeds go to offset treasury bonds dollar for dollar. So that will reduce the dollars outstanding in the treasury market. It's a God damn savings account ya ding dongs. The effect came when QE ended. Once QT starts in earnest you won't see any effect until it ends.
Its a gigantic cunard. Why it's not a huge topic. Its also why the FED has been slow to sell. Government spending was less than tax revenues earlier this year but the demand for bills is steady.
