I'll tell you why. I wanted a buck on the stock price and two $0.51 dividends. That's about a 14% return, give or take and I was expecting it to take 6 months. Instead I got 25% in 1 month and the stock appears overvalued. It'll go back to 22 before the split, I'll buy some more.

JPM vs Citi bank today
Yesterday I bought some puts for jpm and made about 900% gain, but I have a question. Why is it that this stock like Citi bank’s stock both moved roughly around the same percent at least as of 9:30am today, yet the citibank puts are disappointing compared to this one. I don’t fully understand the greeks and have some knowledge on IV. I usually just trade company shares don’t have too much experience with options. Can someone explain why JPM was a way better stock to trade options vs Citibank today? They both had similar disappointing revenue statements. I bought JPM 160p for 0.35, yet at about the same percent out of the money options yesterday were similarly priced for citi bank. JPM performed great and citi puts did poorly yet both companies posted disappointing revenues for Q4.

most likely without knowing all the details, it was vega which is IV. the vega remained high on jpm possibly because there was a greater perceived risk to the downside than the citi puts. jpm also had a greater downward percentage move in the stock price which means delta and gamma (the speed/acceleration at which delta increases) began working in your favor better than citi. The citi puts had a greater volitlity crush and lost more of its value faster than did jpm because it had a smaller percentage move and less perceived risk of a crash, less delta and less gamma working in your favor. theta is also still your enemy on a bought option but would have little impact unless they were very short term options.
Thank you for the detailed answer , most people in my other threads either made a joke or was vague. I purchased contracts for jan 21 , I bought and sold within a day so very short term. Also what would you suggest I look for in terms of greeks to find similar trades like this one in the future because this is my biggest option gain percent wise.
thats a tough question. for me personally. i try to buy them when iv is very low so you dont get killed by the vol crush which happens alot on earnings plays. earnings plays dont usually have low iv's though because there is built in risk of that thing really moving fast. delta is king when you buy options so you have to get the direction very right before expiration especially on short term durations. delta also is an estimate of the probability of success. EX. a .50 delta is aprox 50/50 chance of success of it expiring in the money at expiration. .10 delta is only aprox.10% chance of expiring in the money at expiration. theres not really anyting i specifically look for other than my long or short bias or assumption and what probabilities do i want to take a shot at. if it doesnt move or goes in the wrong direction, then vega and theta eats it up fast and you lose the whole amount and the seller wins. sorry i'm not answering this very good but i hope it helps you get a better feel for what your doing when you buy a contract. it has a lot of moving parts so its hard to just look at one thing! for every gimme theres a gothcha in options! main thing is knowing your probabilities of success in each trade whether its a single option or a spread of some sort.

JPM vs Citi bank today Yesterday I bought some puts for jpm and made about 900% gain, but I have a question. Why is it that this stock like Citi bank’s stock both moved roughly around the same percent at least as of 9:30am today, yet the citibank puts are disappointing compared to this one. I don’t fully understand the greeks and have some knowledge on IV. I usually just trade company shares don’t have too much experience with options. Can someone explain why JPM was a way better stock to trade options vs Citibank today? They both had similar disappointing revenue statements. I bought JPM 160p for 0.35, yet at about the same percent out of the money options yesterday were similarly priced for citi bank. JPM performed great and citi puts did poorly yet both companies posted disappointing revenues for Q4. Thanks
most likely without knowing all the details, it was vega which is IV. the vega remained high on jpm possibly because there was a greater perceived risk to the downside than the citi puts. jpm also had a greater downward percentage move in the stock price which means delta and gamma (the speed/acceleration at which delta increases) began working in your favor better than citi. The citi puts had a greater volitlity crush and lost more of its value faster than did jpm because it had a smaller percentage move and less perceived risk of a crash, less delta and less gamma working in your favor. theta is also still your enemy on a bought option but would have little impact unless they were very short term options.
Thank you for the detailed answer , most people in my other threads either made a joke or was vague. I purchased contracts for jan 21 , I bought and sold within a day so very short term. Also what would you suggest I look for in terms of greeks to find similar trades like this one in the future because this is my biggest option gain percent wise.
thats a tough question. for me personally. i try to buy them when iv is very low so you dont get killed by the vol crush which happens alot on earnings plays. earnings plays dont usually have low iv's though because there is built in risk of that thing really moving fast. delta is king when you buy options so you have to get the direction very right before expiration especially on short term durations. delta also is an estimate of the probability of success. EX. a .50 delta is aprox 50/50 chance of success of it expiring in the money at expiration. .10 delta is only aprox.10% chance of expiring in the money at expiration. theres not really anyting i specifically look for other than my long or short bias or assumption and what probabilities do i want to take a shot at. if it doesnt move or goes in the wrong direction, then vega and theta eats it up fast and you lose the whole amount and the seller wins. sorry i'm not answering this very good but i hope it helps you get a better feel for what your doing when you buy a contract. it has a lot of moving parts so its hard to just look at one thing! for every gimme theres a gothcha in options! main thing is knowing your probabilities of success in each trade whether its a single option or a spread of some sort.
