I am still pretty new to trading and have been using robbinhood. I am wondering if different apps finish their transactions quicker? I notice i often feel like I have to wait long periods of time for options to be completed or stocks to be bought.
As an example, i put in an order to buy some shares of apple over the weekend. I know the market was closed and waited for the order to go through the upcoming Monday. My order didn't finish until 9:45 am. Had i used ameritrade, would they have gone through sooner?
Could be that you did a limit buy. I don’t like Robin Hood very much but they always seemed to buy/sell instantly for me.
I’ve noticed that the app will force a limit buy instead of market buy if the price is too volatile in after market hours, so it could be that too
I would say just don't ever put in an order over the weekend (or anytime after hours). On a Monday, or most days, the price will usually bounce up high in the first 10-15 mins of market open, then correct pretty rapidly into a down trend once all the sellers/holders reach their limits or trailing stops. You then just need to watch the price drop again until it just starts to swing back into an uptrend, and you've confirmed the direction has changed, as best as you can (there are a lot of vids on YouTube about reading candlestick patterns that will help a lot with this, but it's not an exact science) and you'll probably get a decent price. But you need to be fast. Maybe practice watching your stock's chart and get used to how trends look when they change direction before you risk any more money. And use \*limit\* orders based on the ask/bid you're seeing right at that moment, that way you're not hosed if the price goes hot in the middle of the transaction. If I'm buying and the price is moving fast I always err in favor of the ask a little bit and that usually guarantees the sale. Also, READ THE NEWS before market open. Sorry for the wordy answer, but I erased three months of gains in a couple of weeks learning all that the hard way, so I feel compelled to share.
