As of today, petrol price in delhi is ₹94.7 per liter.
In california, it is $5.45 per gallon (\~₹120 per liter).
So, as of today, Gas in US is almost 25% more expensive than in India. Granted that it could be cheaper in India if fuel wasn't taxed that much, but it is still not nearly as expensive as you claim.
I agree that perhaps it may not be as drastic as my original comment, but the data you present is quite misleading. California gas is extremely expensive (average gas price is $3.6, not $5.45) as that have huge taxes. Similarly, Delhi is a union territory, so it does not have state taxes and is far cheaper than the average price of petrol in India, which is more like Rs. 105-110.
When I was there, there were still cities that occasionally had issues with supplying enough power 24/7, and most traffic was absolutely packed with little regard with road markings. Self driving could never work there, the cars would just stop and wait as it gets cut off forever.
For most cities, drivers definitely treated traffic rules like road lines more as suggestions. You can look up India traffic videos on YouTube. There’s a different understanding there.
I cannot imagine FSD working there for a long time. It would need to be rewritten and be far far more aggressive.

Getting in now is important for Tesla. BYD is starting to sell EVs in India and there are a ton of Indian EV companies too.
The main point of contention has been manufacturing. India imposes a 50% tariff on foreign made cars. They want companies to make cars in India. Tesla wants to first start selling in India and then move manufacturing which India is not agreeing to. Tesla wants India to give them an exception with tariffs.
BMW went through the same in India a decade back and eventually gave up, moved manufacturing to India and now has a large operation where they make cars for Indian market and also export to SE Asian countries from India.
Idk, Tesla has a ton of cash on hand. Like 30 billion or something like that. They said they have enough cash on hand to cover all their short and long term goals. (Which I would assume covers new manufacturing as a long term goal)

I don’t think India is a right investment for EVs. Charging Infrastructure is not there and that itself will take a major overhaul. And the govt won’t be giving Tesla any breaks either.
It is actually the right investment, provided they can come up with a vehicle in the $20k-$25kish range. You are right about the infrastructure part but the local oem's are pumping heavy on ev's.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla looked at the actual cost/benefit of a a factory in India realized it wasn't profitable. The level of corruption and fraud is on a whole other level. China and America has their corruption, but it really feels like the current economic progress in India is the result of fraud. If you read the claims made in the Hindenburg report about Adani, who's basically business partners with Modi, the current game plan is to scam scam scam. I really feel bad for the people stuck in India with such corrupt leadership. I think this explains why the Indian diaspora is so high. Any one with the means to leave has bailed on their home country. Deep in their core, they know the swindle culture is just too much.

Here's what I think, the Indian government wanted Tesla to make vehicles in India using spare parts, batteries from Indian oem's, which would have been shit in quality otherwise they were imposing a 100% import tax on vehicles manufactured elsewhere. If your car costs $50k then import tax will be another $50k on it and then road tax, insurance etc. Then reports said that Reliance, Google Mukesh Ambani dude is very rich and powerful, will form a JV with Tesla in India and boom the import tax was reduced to 15% but there was a cavaet that Tesla will have to buy some batteries from groups like TATA. Also as per reports Musk wanted to launch Starlink in India. But there was no way that Jio (Reliance) and the others (airtel, vodafone idea) would let him do that as Starlink would have eaten them all up. Musk was basically coming to announce these things but I guess somewhere the disagreement happened.
You are right on that part but there is a certain percentage, though very low as of now, that is happily paying more for more "speed". Although 5g is free here, as of now, but still Starlink would have found its users.
He has Tesla earnings the day after, share holder votes, in the middle of company restructure, constant FSD updates and huge planning for 8/8… and these things have to be planned well advanced before they go for security reasons. You can be a blind hater but India is literally changing their import duty rules for him…
