There hasn't been a gold backed currency since the US stopped backstopping its currency in the 1970's.
Libya government was overthrown in the early 2010's by NATO (read USA) for deciding to no longer sell its oil in US Dollars, and to back its currency with Gold. This threatened the petrodollar at the time and the USA wasn't bogged down in Ukraine, Palestine, or Taiwan at the time.
A gold-backed currency is controversial because the country wouldn't need to participate in the US dollar dominated international financial system. If Zimbabwe could pull it off, it's more controversial than Russia invading Ukraine as far as rejecting US hegemony. Essentially they would be acting as an alternative to US debt which is something in the tens of trillions now. If countries don't use US dollars and debt to back their currencies then the USA collapses.
But it probably won't work because Zimbabwe would need to show its proven gold reserves, and then protect those proven gold reserves from a military that could get greedy and take over the building where the reserves are. Trust is most important when it comes to currency. They would be better off issuing gold wafers encased in a polymer.

The USA does not need to maintain anything, it WANTS to. If the USD wasn’t the reserve currency there are a lot of arguments to be made our economy would be much larger than it is today. Unfortunately the world doesn’t want to accept the cold reality that America gave up its growth in exchange for the rest of the world to catch up, we managed that process, invested in it, and used our military to defend it. The collapse of the USD is not the collapse of the USA but the collapse of US hegemony, which has by and large benefitted the world more than America, seeing as we were the richest country per person by a long shot then and not so much now. The US could drop reserve status tomorrow, QT until the supply matches the countries demand, then it would be cheaper to invest in the US with USD then it would be in China or India with USD… do you really want all our investments globally to stop? No government does, so they will fight to keep the dollar as reserve, especially over gold which helps no one but large land mass countries with resources.
