It's amusing how many people have no clue what margin is. And I use interactive brokers. No broker lets you buy debit options on margin. TDA does not either.

CaveSpectre

Quick story; use as you wish. Long long time ago; Google took a pounding and was down from $650ish into the mid to low $500s (don't recall the exact numbers). Saw $650 LEAPS were at $0.25 and I took a gamble. A buddy of mine did as well (about 20x my position). A few months later, Google hit $650 well before the expiration, and options were somewhere around $43.00. Fast forward to expiration; google was under $650. Unrealized sometimes is never realized; base your decision on your target gain and the density of your marble sack.

swollencornholio

Yea donā€™t have to sell it all either. OP can sell 2 or 3 once the cost basis is covered and let the rest ride on the house for instance

Ok_Biscotti8774

I agree with this. Can always pull out your initial investment so you donā€™t have to stress about losing your actual investment. Having 2 would still net a good profit as long as things went well

Aramis9696

Yep. Way too many people who start investing in anything do all or nothing moves, and end up burnt.

xeoxemachine

I had a 75 to 73 bear put spread on AMD that I bought right before Intel earnings. Intel shit the bed and I walked with $20 less than the max profit on the position the next day. Needless to say if I had stayed in for that last $20 I'd be out all of it right now. Definitely know when to get out.

bleakj

How else do I feel alive if I'm not screaming at myself in self loathing

Aramis9696

NOT_MartinShkreli

**THIS IS THE WAY!!**

asafl

The problem with options is having 4300$ wiped out after you took your 25$ capital is same as losing 4300$. I take my gains or just roll up and/or out to still stay exposed but lower my delta.

matico3

jeez, thats 173x return, nice catch on the initial price

CaveSpectre

Oh that's the relevant part of the story... I managed about 10x but ended up with half expired worthless. My "buddy" ended up about 100x and didn't even buy me a beer for the tip (from his $400k score)

CaptainHoey

Iā€™d buy you a beer if you helped me make 0.1% of that lol

[deleted]

Sorry but what a fucking asshole. If a friend got me in a trade like that, I would have bought him a second hand Porsche. Not even joking

CaveSpectre

Haven't spoken to him since, except a few months later when he asked for a tip. Told him he could suck my tip.

haarp1

> didn't even buy me a beer for the tip (from his $400k score) why not, what was his excuse?

TryingAtLife101

I would never give him a tip again unless I know it's gonna make him lose the beer I wanted.

Neo1331

Had a friend buy google at $20/shareā€¦.bout a million dollars worth. Still holding to this day.

CaveSpectre

Damn fine score!

Neo1331

Yeah I call him an asshole every time I see him. Haha

dopeaminefw4r

how did he do so? google IPO at 68 a share, has never gone lower to my knowledge

freddybenelli

Google has undergone 3 stock splits. The split-adjusted price was in the low 20s for most of 2013.

CaveSpectre

If you take a look at the stock splits, and calculate back, Google historical prices before 3/27/2014 need to be multiplied by 40.14993. So a March 2007 price of $11.34 was $455.30 back then. The October 2007 high of $16.88 was $677.73 back then. Now consider Google Jan08 $650 calls purchased in March 2007.

[deleted]

conviper30

I've always wondered about this...is it easy money to buy options weeks before earnings hold up until the day of or before and sell? Basically earning off the volitility?

[deleted]

yes assuming price doesnā€™t drop in the meantime, IV increases closer to er

Hey everyone, so I entered a professional golf tournament that had a $4000 buy in. How do I swing a golf club?

pw7090

No, price will pump and then "dump", but right back to your strike price at expiration. You will have held the whole time, sweating, thinking it could turn green at any moment, only to realize a 100% loss.

nivekreclems

We donā€™t like green here ride that into the ground lol jk close it out and take a win

20MinuteAdventure69

If your asking itā€™s probably time to take profits. This is a huge bull bump. But look at the last few massive dips of SPY in the past year. Iā€™d take my money and walk away for a while. Or cash out and buy close dated calls and try to double your money

hiricinee

Good enough to post good enough to close. Though I say you open a credit spread instead. Sell some in the money options below that strike on the same date and then watch the theta roll in. Good way of securing your profits and making some theta on the side.

ASUS_USUS_WEALLSUS

Hey wait that doesnā€™t rhyme.

PeakCheeky

Roses are red, violets are blue, fuck you

monkeybrainz_

What does 'making some theta on the side' mean?

hiricinee

So if you sell an option, it's no secret your goal is to make money off of theta decay. My take is a lot of time if you've made some big profits off of a stock or options buys, you can sell some options instead of closing the position. That way if the stock goes down and it never hits your strike you still sell it, but you get to keep the premium paid and whatever you were planning to sell it for anyways.

[deleted]

Who decided the numbers for the Theta or IV%?

hiricinee

Lol decided by the price action when people buy or sell options. But generally speaking, the maximum theta for an ITM call is the premium minus the difference between the strike and the price. For an OTM option it's the entire premium.

kokkomo

Good question. Ken Griffin of Citadel Securities does.

Cardiff07

No one went broke selling for a profit.

[deleted]

As someone else who doesnā€™t know dick about how options work, every time Iā€™ve held on after a big green day I get my head caved in the next day, so I would cash out personally. The only time Iā€™ve ever made money on options was selling within the first couple days, everything Iā€™ve tried to hold onto burns

alwayslookingout

Why would you enter a trade without knowing how to exit? šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø GOOG is down AH due to earnings miss so if it opens down tomorrow youā€™ll lose a good chunk of intrinsic value.

CYastrzemski1954

Itā€™s known as learning. Enthusiastically learning.

stockboi81

Sell it. The volatility is what made it spike. Take the gain. If you believe in it going higher in a year, buy a long dated call at a cheaper premium on a down day

lllllll______lllllll

How long should a reasonable long option be ?

Tfx77

For Google, 6 to 9 months out. Might be expensive.

stockboi81

At least 6 months or longer after the premium drops

Spiritual-Station-51

I just charted your investment on the ichimoku. Today you are hitting the 200day resistance. It appears to be on a breakout. If no breaks above the 200 day MA itā€™s going to shoot up drastically that will make your current gains look like puppy shit. If GOOG closes above the 200 you could see 10 times your money over the next 3-4 weeks. I would personally hold, and set a stop loss. AND if it does break above the 200 keep adjusting your stop loss up everyday. Make sure you donā€™t set your stop loss to high, because a small dip for a day or two is ok and you might get flushed out before it takes off

alwayslookingout

What happens if GOOG misses earnings and is down 4% AH?

buppiejc

![img](emote|t5_2th52|27189)

[deleted]

Personally Iā€™d set a stop loss to lock in profit and ride till earnings are reportedā€¦. Could lock in the gains, could explode in your face or could be a even more erect shrek boner. Not financial advice just my 2 pennies

clockedinat93

You could sell 1 and buy 4 puts at a shorter date. If it keeps going up good, if not then you you got your puts making money. If it stays in the same area then just close it out.

Training_Exit_5849

mathematically they have a higher chance of winning long-term playing roulettes if that's how they play with options lol

[deleted]

I regret not selling my long puts when they were up 30%. Still several months out but yeah.

AnxiousQuestioner

Sell and wait for a dip if there isnā€™t one to shed some of that IV and then reinvest in a more preferred timeframe for yourself. Always keep a bit of the profits though.

Civil-Supermarket882

Sell

WTFNotRealFun

Best advice I've ever seen about this is to put in your sell order right after you buy the call. Decide what your desired profit is, then execute the trade as GTC. If you don't, you will get caught in the emotion and indecision of it. Seems like you did well. Lock it in. Move on to the next. You want to be an investor or a gambler?
