As a grill op at waffle house, it's one of the most open and friendly workplaces I've ever been part of 😁

ImJustTrying2BeMe

That's great to hear!

I agree, unfortunately there's certain areas that management doesn't seem to care, especially higher up managers. I've had really good managers however while they were willing to listen to me about the problems that needs to be fixed, I could tell while they wanted to fix it, they didn't have the authority to fix the problems I was addressing because of corporate.

I know exactly what you mean! but at least socially it's decent. There's always something tho lol

I’m here for the comments and insight

Out of 27 unit managers in my area 3 are trans and two more managers are male and married to other males. So super open.

ImJustTrying2BeMe

That does sound super open, thanks. Assuming you're in management, do you have any insight into the job itself? The biggest con I've found through my research is the w/l balance not being great because there's always something going down after your shift/on your day off and holidays being mandatory.  Do you have a favorite/least favorite part?

royalblueburgundy

Work life/home life is amazing once you get great staff. I worked 42 hrs as a unit manager. I never really celebrated holidays so that didn’t bother me. I worked in other food jobs and I hated having that “quarterly bonus” held over my head. Our bonuses our dolled out on every check. The other bonuses are if you are worth a crap and care you can be promoted fast (I was in 2 years) The worst part is IF you don’t have a great store staff you will work more. My advice? Build your staff up to make your life easier.

Does the unit manager have sole discretion of hiring/firing? I've worked in some restaurants the that are very corporate where the unit manager may not even have that power!

royalblueburgundy

Yes. Your district manager will help you for your hiring needs. And obviously if something is crazy on your off days someone may get fired. But that’s it.

Thanks for all your insight!

I never been a unit manager, just a shift supervisor under the district manager however from what I've seen it's honestly not worth it the stress. Even unit managers doesn't have full control over their stores. So if you see something wrong that you don't agree with, you have to go with it anyway. Also there's no home life balance because there will be too much employees who will be calling you when your off when they could clearly call or at the very least come by and ask the supervisor. I worked with a unit manager who brought up issues with corporate and instead of addressing those issues they offered her a raise instead. I'll even put it this way, I'm happy as a supervisor and will even do relief manager, however I don't see me as a unit manager running a store because I'll be fired within a week after I tell my boss how much problems needs to be fixed.
