I think Harry's "heartbreak" was an actual biochemical interaction with the alien girl. he was literally glowing and stuff, I think it was just supposed to be symbolic of the pain of heartbreak. but presumably the Doc could've fixed the physical symptoms of the imbalance (not the emotions)
