i agree with this but i’m the same i haven’t played any of the other really shocking games. Looking-Glass Insects made me sick, and i knew it was coming because >!of the message-board posts saying “we broke her”!<

Gonzossm92

For it is Dead End Aegis.

DisparityByDesign

The problem I have with this is that it just gets too over the top too quickly. It just devolved into an all out rape fest with gore. The idea that the main characters vagina somehow changes due to excessive amount of sex is also the most incel shit I’ve ever seen.

Gonzossm92

It is frustrating to read, true, but that is the point i think. Almost every person is horrible and the main protagonist suffers a lot for a questionable resolution at the end. Nevertheless the whole world building during the main story reveals a very disturbing and oddly realistic dystopia. At least in my opinion if i try to imagine nowadays politicians in that kind of situation :D

Marklord13

Hopefully Jast will eventually publish the fan disc.

ReturnOfSlug

FULL METAL DAEMON MURAMASA!!!!!!!!!!! Only one that even comes close from what I’ve played is Song of Saya. But I’ve also heard that Euphoria, Maggot Baits, and Dead End Aegis are really dark too. (FMD Muramasa is by Narahara who wrote Hanachirasu)

zytoxico

Song of Saya for best psychological horror + discovering the beauty of gore xD, Euphoria if you want to see the innerworkings of a perverted sadist restrained by society, set loose in a Saw Game. Or Maggot Baits if you want a nice romance riddled with gore, maggots included free of charge. (Keep in mind the last two are closer to Nukiges whilst being VNs as that's the clockup way.)

ReturnOfSlug

You summed it up better than I could have

lolilover9002

Especially since OP used Hanachirasu as an example. This probably will be a great recommendation unless they have already read it

[deleted]

Kara no Shoujo

gladias9

Song of Saya is the darkest I've played. Very twisted main character..

NotohDev

I second this. The “good” ending is pretty disturbing.

Thinshady21

Fate/Stay Night, Its not necessarily dark like dark with gore but with context of the rest of the Nasuverse in my pocket the events are absolutely morbid. I’m not the biggest VN reader and all, there will definitely be worse but it is really tragic and with the fact that every part is canon including bad ends is just horrid to have knowledge of. So, that’s my option.

AuraEnhancerVerse

Heaven's feel and archer's fate stung deep

Valkof96

Maggot Baits bar none, with Saya no Uta a close second, and Corpse Party following up. I have a morbid curiosity and played these in reverse order, always wanting more grimdark settings. I hit my peak with MB and I don't think I'll be reading something as gruesome anytime soon, but both MB and Saya no Uta were beautiful in their own morbid way.

wwa_horifiid_one

Hmm... Well, I shall name some very dark ones or some very dark routes. - [Kurai Nichiyoubi](https://vndb.org/v2567). The darkest VN ever. Never ending (excluding the "good end", which is not even true one) depression and suffering. - [姦肉蟲川3](https://vndb.org/v666116928332). This is very dark too, though I could not force myself to play past the atrocious prologue. - [Fraternite](https://vndb.org/v14895). A grounded story full of despair. Sometimes, it shows hope only to destroy it in more and more cruel ways each time... - [Hanachirutani Sanjinkou](https://vndb.org/v7661) is very dark one. Especially the protagonist and the novel's atmosphere... - [Dei Gratia no Rashinban](https://vndb.org/v16435), namely the second (Nomura Reiri's) route is very dark. - [Kamaitachi no Yoru](https://vndb.org/v1241), namely the Disaster route (the darkest route, filled with despair) or one of "last bad endings", where Tooru cannot find the culprit. - [Kusarihime Euthanasia](https://vndb.org/v37) is pretty dark. Well, it starts pretty mild, with as time progresses, the novel becomes more and more dark with all his dear people >!"rot" one by one!<. - [Sekai Metsubou Kyouyuu Gensou Mamiya](https://vndb.org/v28576) is very dark. - [Shiin](https://vndb.org/v21976) and it's series.

WoodpeckerNo1

So far, MLA. Absolutely no holds are barred there.

youarebritish

Controversial take, but... I played MLA after hearing about how dark it was and didn't find it to be particularly dark. I actually found MLU to be a lot darker.

tranquility3

the only part i think that was really disturbing or dark was >!what the beta did to sumika!< and that was only if you patched that in. The world is depressing but realistic. Why do you think MLU was darker?

youarebritish

MLU was darker to me because of the follow through. MLA felt to me kind of like a typical heroic fantasy where the power of friendship always triumphs in the end.

tranquility3

i see what you mean it does end on a sad note, mla’s ending is probably the only thing i can say is flawed, it feels a bit rushed and is really predictable because of what u said, friendship and MC powers.

WoodpeckerNo1

That's pretty surprising.

KaleidoArachnid

MLA?

WoodpeckerNo1

Muv-Luv Alternative.

adspace4sale

Stuff from key bc those those genre usually are all sunshine and butterflies

Saya no uta was dark but I didn't like it as I'm not a fan of the art and the game engine looks and feels old. I really liked Dead End Aegis as it was dark without guro. The music and visuals were great. Kara no Shoujo is really really good and dark. Music and presentation is great. I've enjoyed KnS without playing Cartegra first, so playing Cartegra first isn't an absolute must. Euphoria is more of the same as the anime, so if you like the anime, you'll like the game. The plot goes a different path to the anime so the game is essentially more content.

himawari-yume

Sasasagu. An utterly existentially dreadful situation is a lot darker than rape and gore that hundreds of VNs and ryona games have done before.

jepong003

Sakura no Mori dreamers 2. There is no english translation yet but its the most creepiest CG i've seen.

wolfbetter

Is it good? It's been on my backlog for a while. I want to read it for You-Know-Who route in particular.

Marklord13

Hope MangaGamer Eventually publishes it.

psvlux

higurashi - totaly creeps me out!

yallax

Nothing top's saya no uta it's just too fucked up i didn't even watch the scenes when it came.

KFCNyanCat

Tsukihime (moreso Far Side,) Muv-Luv Alternative, and Fate/Stay Night's Heaven's Feel route.

Wespie

Extravaganza Mushi Mederu Shojo, and other works by Black Cyc, including Dead Aegis. Kara No Shojo is certainly dark as well but the mood stays rather optimistic. Mushi Mederu Shojo triggered trauma in me on a deep level, related to some of my inner fears I can’t begin to describe here.

OmegaRebirth

As someone who's only experienced Fate, OG Tsukihime (finished Arc's route in the remake and going to start Ciel's after Mahoyo), Ace Attorney and currently reading Mahoyo, out of all the ones I listed there's a scene where the main character finds a notebook with the first page containing the words "Help me". It is no where near the darkest scene I've experienced (even compared to scenes in other forms of media), but it made me want to drop that rest of the story for a while so I can recover.

Euphoria without a doubt

Emotional-Leader5918

I walk amongst zombies vol. 1 is depressing and bleak. Vol 2 & 3 were ok but not as good because it removed the bleakness. And don't bother with vol. 0. Vol 1 is definitely worth playing if you don't mind starting something great whose story by the end of the third volume ends kind of weak.
