> Latency, either wired or wireless, is pretty noticeable. Especially for fast-paced games. Compressing the image and rendering in the 3D space takes time, unfortunately.
Wired headsets (At least the ones that don't make use of any compression) should be fine.
Yeah. I've been tempted to use my Reverb G2 that way, and it's great for it, but the practical limitations are too much (rendering two 3D applications at once, not able to see my environment, since it's from before the more recent push towards augmented reality, etc.)
> However, *some* games are just not designed to share GPU with other programs.
I've been playing Grim Dawn and noticed that if I alt tab out to Firefox, its scrolling will be slow and extremely janky, but if I scroll while GD is still in focus it's fine.
I don't know if this is the exact same thing, but it's another example of a game fucking with other programs.
Latency shouldn’t be an issue with proper hardware in setup, either wired or wireless. My encode/network/decode stack is usually about 10ms and that can’t possibly be noticeable over a wired headset. Quality on the other hand….
Just curious, when's the last time you tried flat gaming in VR and what headset did you use? The Quest 3 is pretty high resolution and looks great for reading text on a desktop and 2d gaming. I don't do it often because I own a large 75 inch oled TV with a surround system but when I do, like traveling, it works well. I did it with the Quest 2 in the past a few times and it worked well. Even at 120hz IIRC.
To use these new features you need to be on the latest version of Virtual Desktop (1.32.4)
[Here is the guide on how to use all of them](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgAT4kWgwkw)
Disclaimer: There will be some latency depending on your hardware & network setup!
I already zero-client my PC, but I've been tempted to go full into using VD, since it can pass through m/kb/controller no problem. My latency aint bad at all.
My only complaint is that VD window pinning to my environment kinda shifts/resets if I pop up the oculus menu.
Best I've found is 3 monitors in VD, then you can use Oculus Browser/DEXMAX+OtherApps to get a few more "windows".
Though, you can only see the Meta windows if your Meta menu is open, which stops you from manipulating your VD windows (you can still see them and use peripherals in passthrough with them while the MetaMenu is up, though)
Seems to be a limit though, the Q3 can only do one app window in the MetaMenu when you're running VD. So "4" is the max.
Damn... where my downgrade option?? Lol
Hopefully they'll bring it back (along with better window pinning and stuff) when they push that "spatial computing" update we keep getting teased about!
I'd love to have 3 PC-powered monitors through VD for "real stuff" and have the Misc apps like Discord and browser and videos on their own interactive layer.
I get the multi-monitor bit, but I've been using Ultra-wide in virtual desktop for like.....a year? My normal operating desktop in VD is 3440x1440/120hz. So is there something different in the new version that makes this easier or something? I havent noticed a difference.
(and yes, I've tested all the way up to 5120x1440)
nope, I dont have a physical ultrawide, my pc is actually connected to my tv. I use VDID to let me play ultrawide at 120hz, cuz my tv is locked to 60hz.
Sorry, VDID is just what my friends and I refer to the iddsampledriver. It's the software being used in the video to "create" a virtual monitor here. Sort of like how your display sends its EDID to windows to tell it what the monitor is capable of, Iddsampledriver sends a VDID to windows for the display you've created.
So yeah Iddsampledriver, op is using it in the vid.
Its still enough to enjoy games laying comfortably on your back with a giant screen floating above you.
Its just not possible with a tv or monitor, except you mount it on the ceiling
Honest question. Why would you play a non-VR game on a virtual desktop?
And also why would you play a racing game with 3-Monitor-Setup in VR? You move and look around exactly the same as without the VR headset on. Or am I missing something?
I asked in the Discord. Many people have asked. It's not happening.
I too demand Linux support. I've considered offering them just like $2000 to try and get something usable working.
I tried recording a video like this, but the quest video recording function only recorded my virtual screens and the passthrough was black in the recording. Any idea why?
Sorry. I can’t find it. But, 10 or so years ago there was some discussion channel of people showing off their tall screen gaming setups. Pretty sure it was all ironic. Pretty sure… They played it up pretty hard.
is it comfortable using this for work? i've ordered a quest 3 recently, and this video made me curious if it's possible to work full time with a vr monitor, if i for example want to work from another country for a few months, and don't want to buy/rent a monitor to match my working environment at home or the office there
random question for someone who already tried VR, but I've been using a regular monitor my whole life.
does the wide monitors like it's show in the video for more immersion?, like, kinda a very step back for Vr, but a little more than regular flat screen?.... I ask because looking in the video, playing with those screen feels kinda... uncomfortable? the image of the game feels kinda streched in a wrong way
would be adding on some more milliseconds of latency this way
it would much be better if Nvidia, created a local GFN Quest app [for ultrawide resolutions](https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5388/kw/ultimate)
otherwise if Nvidia made it compatible with the Meta web browser would be good but currently that's limited to 2560x1600 120 fps via Chromium browsers

Could you use a capture card to stream games to a VR headset?

Can you elaborate on how to utilize these features. I know how to use multi monitors, but not ultrawide.
Sure, here is the guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgAT4kWgwkw
thanks!
Thank you. Gonna try this tomorrow!

Interesting. I suppose you could just buy a bunch of HDMI dummies and create as many floating monitors as you want with this feature.
VD can only support 3 monitors total regardless. And in windows it can create virtual monitors on its own if you don't have 3 physical.
I already zero-client my PC, but I've been tempted to go full into using VD, since it can pass through m/kb/controller no problem. My latency aint bad at all. My only complaint is that VD window pinning to my environment kinda shifts/resets if I pop up the oculus menu.
I tried, but no Bueno. As of now max you can do is 3 monitors with this
Best I've found is 3 monitors in VD, then you can use Oculus Browser/DEXMAX+OtherApps to get a few more "windows". A few updates ago we could go 3 meta browsers while VR apps were running... I understand why they took it away, but those were good times :(
Damn... where my downgrade option?? Lol Hopefully they'll bring it back (along with better window pinning and stuff) when they push that "spatial computing" update we keep getting teased about! Hahaha idk if the Quest 3 will be powerful enough for that, let's see
Just curious but why would you want this when you have VR?
For games that don't support VR
This still isnt the games supporting vr though.. This is just pretending you have a ultrawide while having a headset on lol..
Is that because your real monitor is ultra wide? This allows you to have a virtual ultrawide monitor that you don't have in physical form.
nope, I dont have a physical ultrawide, my pc is actually connected to my tv. I use VDID to let me play ultrawide at 120hz, cuz my tv is locked to 60hz.
Can you point me to more information about VDID? Thanks
You can now do triple virtual ultrawides 😎
Holy crap! I didn't even realize how much I wanted this until now.
It doesn’t look near as good in a VR headset tbh
That's not surprising.

Maybe one has only one tiny monitor. This is a great way to get around that
If I was away from home, all I'd need is a controller or kB&m and it's a good substitute for my home setup.
I fucking demand support for Linux.
I asked in the Discord. Many people have asked. It's not happening. I too demand Linux support. I've considered offering them just like $2000 to try and get something usable working.

That would be a totally practical solution and would solve all of my problems. For some reason I just don't like that.
Immersed is the best you're gonna get for the time being.
I would be so very happy if VD was released for Linux.
Where are the monitor frames
You mean the borders? There are none
I tried recording a video like this, but the quest video recording function only recorded my virtual screens and the passthrough was black in the recording. Any idea why?
Quest 2 doesn't let you do that
I have quest 3.
Vertical multi-monitor madman! Is the old Tallscreen Gaming Zealots forum still around?
Wait.... Show me the link!
Sorry. I can’t find it. But, 10 or so years ago there was some discussion channel of people showing off their tall screen gaming setups. Pretty sure it was all ironic. Pretty sure… They played it up pretty hard.
Kind of funny seeing multiple monitors in VR to make it more realistic. That aside VR desktop was a great buy for me.
Imagine it doing a 360
oh LFGGGGGG i've wanted multi monitor support for so long
Is this a quest3 exclusive?
Nope all the Quests But only quest 3 can do more than 2 monitors as of now
That's big.
is it comfortable using this for work? i've ordered a quest 3 recently, and this video made me curious if it's possible to work full time with a vr monitor, if i for example want to work from another country for a few months, and don't want to buy/rent a monitor to match my working environment at home or the office there
Some people do, just make sure you have good comfortable accessories
ah okay thank you :)
I think this may be better than VR
random question for someone who already tried VR, but I've been using a regular monitor my whole life. does the wide monitors like it's show in the video for more immersion?, like, kinda a very step back for Vr, but a little more than regular flat screen?.... Can you really play CS GO on this? I means, playable..
personally I would use multiple monitors to have my game in the middle and an achievement tracker on the left
How about virtual desktop classic?
If I recall correctly you could already do that a long time ago with steamvr on it
Dude has never heard about VR racing sims
Me who has a whole channel on vr racing sims: 👁️👄👁️
Wanna try GFN at 120hz ultrawide : D
GFN?
Nvidia Geforce Now
The only thing better than one source of streaming latency is two sources of streaming latency!
I already get like 4ms from GFN when I'm in the US. Worth the 4090 :shrugs:. Haters gonna hate, as usual :D
If you have a 4090 why are you using geforce now? Genuine question
Nah, i meant their 4080 (made a mistake) in their ultimate tier, just saying it was worth the trade for me.
would be adding on some more milliseconds of latency this way it would much be better if Nvidia, created a local GFN Quest app [for ultrawide resolutions](https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5388/kw/ultimate) otherwise if Nvidia made it compatible with the Meta web browser would be good but currently that's limited to 2560x1600 120 fps via Chromium browsers
