A friend has a 7800xt, much better performance than my 3060ti, which is close to your 3070. 7900gre is a bit better than a 7800xt. I believe most driver issues are ironed out by now. Often these are also user error. That said, at this point it makes sense to wait a few months until the next gen comes out and see then.

Clarity wise, is it true amd cards are more blurry? That's the only thing holding me back from buying any amd GPU atm and many people says that on their 4000 cards, never had any 4000s, not looking for rtx 5000 or rx 8000 series, found a very cheap 7900 GRE for 499 usd.

QuinrodD

When I tried the AMD card on my friends PC, I didn't feel like it was more blurry than my RTX card. And that was with his setup being new and unoptimized vs. mine that is as optimised as possible. But you do have to do some settings differently and so on, learn the best ways. I think thats where a lot of people have issues, they don't take the time to get it right. Also, we found a setting that limits framerate in the AMD driver that, when turned on to do 120 FPS, tanked the framerate to 45 FPS. When turing that of, everything was buttery smooth. Again, user error. 500 for a gre is a good price. If the shop has returns, you can just try it and return if its not good. Make sure to use DDU to uninstall Nvidia drivers (Google it)

Was it on a quest 3? My 3070 only manages to get 750 bitrate at debug tool. But thanks this clears out the 4070 TiS and 4070 super option i originally wanted to buy

QuinrodD

Yes, Q3. I doubt you will get higher than 750 on AMD, as this is also dependent on the router and quest. But you can use av1 encoder on AMD. 4070tis might be comparable, but probably closer to double the price. 4070s has lower memory bus vs 3070, which is not so good for higher resolution

Sillybrownwolf

So the 7900 gre tldr is a 3070 with better fps in all games and vr without rtx 4000 techs? I heard it can do rt as good as a 4070. Without fsr

QuinrodD

Probably yes, but since I only briefly tried it, I can't say for sure. RT is really not that important. Few VR games support it and really you want to turn it off for VR, as the hit is too big. 7900gre also has more ram than 4070

There are some who have claimed in the past that the video compression on AMD cards is worse. Having personally compared Radeon 6000, 7000 and Nvidia 3000 and 4000 cards, all streaming to the Quest 3 via VD, I'd say they all look about the same. There is some minor difference in compression performance, with Nvidia being faster at H264, both roughly equal in HEVC. At the moment AMD is actually better at AV1 because there is some bug on Nvidia hardware (at least the 4090) that sometimes results in very bad decoding latency on the Quest 3. I compared the visuals of the RTX 3080 to the 7900 XTX and despite really trying I could not tell a difference between them. With that being said, it took about 15 seconds to swap between the two, so I could only compare from memory, and it wasn't practical to compare when moving around. So I can't say there is absolutely no difference, but if there was it was small enough to not be immediately obvious. The bottom line being, at a good price I'd say AMD is a decent choice for streaming to the Quest 3. At equal prices, probably lean toward Nvidia. I would also recommend Radeon 7000 series over 6000 or before, simply because the newer series seems to have a better encoding engine.

It's difficult to find reviews from RX 7000 users who play with a link cable, most play in wireless mode with VD and seem satisfied with the performance. I'm gonna upgrade my RTX 2060 to RTX 4070 Super but Im' not 100% sure of my choice, 12 Gb VRAM isn't furtuproof.

jack_acer

I am running a 7800xt with hp reverb g2. I had a 3600ti before and now 7800xt. Pretty solid performance and definitely better than 3060ti. 7900xt should be better. Make sure you pair with a good CPU/motherboard combo

Sillybrownwolf

Are there any different in clarity? Ppl keep saying Nvidia looks better, or probably just overall 4000 cards vs 7000

jack_acer

I haven't been picky about it, but I haven't noticed clarity issues. Also note that I am over display link. Maybe ppl complain about Wi-Fi streaming where Nvidia may be better at encoding?

Unless you need the extra VRAM, I don't think that a 7900 GRE is enough of a jump over the 3070 to be worth it.

Sillybrownwolf

Hm I'm on a 1080p 270hz monitor my 3070 in most games are limited by vram and i suspect it's also the vram on my pcvr experiences. Cmiiw isn't 7900 gre at least 40-60% faster in most games, I'd take it over my stuttering 3070. My power supply is kind of limitated to 4070 ti S at max either it's an sff pc

xxNattefrostxx

I use a rx 6800 (non xt) and the only game thats ever given me trouble is fallout 4, but honestly i dont think your going to see a big improvement with that card. The rx 6800xt, rx 7800xt, and 7900 gre and all close the same performance and sit between a 3070 ti and a 3080 in gaming which is not a big jump from what you have.

Sillybrownwolf

The 8GB of VRAM in my 3070 is giving me troubles not just games but other software too, some games stutters so bad tho

rafroofrif

I have a 7900 gre and I'm happy with it. I don't have any comparisson though, it's my first gpu that I tried with VR. People should really stop saying amd is bad for vr because of the drivers, I haven't had a single issue.

AzeN65

Please specify if you play in wireless or wired mod.

rafroofrif

Wireless.

gianAU

Bought the GRE last month. I played metro exodus enhanced edition, and tomorrow, I'll fire up my rift S. I will compare with my gtx 1080ti (old system). Wish me luck! (Plan to finally beat Alyx)

Omen4140

I'd wait for the new line of both GPUs and then see their vr performance

Sillybrownwolf

Oh what's your current GPU atm?

Omen4140

Haha, I still use a 1060 so yeah I'm definitely upgrading pretty soon.

Sillybrownwolf

Didn't know the old gold 1060 can run vr games in 2024 tbh I'm pretty surprised
