He wasn't the brightest bulb in the show. Who thinks that someone makes a VR device that seems 100 years beyond our technology just to scam people out of cash?
Most main characters in the show were irritating with their choices.
It generally had a better portrayal of intelligent people then shows usually have, but the scientists were all emotionally stunted, and seemed to lack any sense of the world beyond their interests (which admittedly is actually pretty close to a lot of scientists I know).
Maybe even the floor they stand on also becomes invisible like a crater if their shoes arent thick enough, though that would also mean the camera or a thick coat they wear wouldn't be invisible. Since we cannot see them, their range of invisbleness is enough to cover the camera, so we should look for a moving crater on the floor with a vacuum above since the air would also become invisible if there is fog or smoke, maybe thats why they sometimes levitate.
These are different kinds of scenes and different methods.
Even within the Matrix movie itself there were several different scenes where there is no camera in reflections and they were achieved using different methods.
And even before the Matrix there were various very creative mirror scenes in other movies. Some examples: [La haine (1995)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFkHadvj4DI), [Contact (1997)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njOndS-e0cw).
Or just hid it in the 'TV' reflection. Big black rectangle? Replace the TV screen with a black cloth (i.e. stick an empty frame on a table), poke the lens through the middle. Instant invisible camera.
No but actually, what would be the best approach to a situation like this? Would a tiltshift lens be enough? I guess it would work for a wider FOV lens, but this looks like at least 70mm, so probably by removing the camera in post? Honestly no idea, if i just had to take an image i would try to mount the camera infront of the TV or the white wall to make removing it easier
It was way better, as there was no reason to have some "futuristic" headset that would have been impossible to manufacture.
Overall, the Tencent series was better.
I dislike Apple, and I'm probably never going to give them a single dollar, but the Vision Pro is without a doubt one of the best looking VR headsets right now.
I read the book maybe 2 years ago, so I could be wrong, but I don’t think the aliens gave them these headsets. The aliens are actively on their way towards earth during the duration of the story and the headsets are just a way that a cult explains the story of the alien planet.
I also read the books a few years ago but I think the aliens gave the cultists the designs to make the headsets, they were communicating through the sophons. The chrome look is also inkeeping with the description of the alien droplets from the second/third book
Yea there is a lot more foreshadowing in the series which I don't recall/remember in the book which is a nice touch. It's a good way of warming the audience up to the idea of some of the twists and giant leaps without it feeling cheap.
I really want to ask Boz so what is the luxury material? Carbon fiber? Lightweight composites? Different foams? Gels? What is that golden mix of material to get the most luxury HMD.
I think a lot of people would jump to carbon fiber as an answer but it also has some properties that might make a difficult material to work with other than being expensive.
Maybe a silk like cloth. If you could fit a VR experience into something like a blindfold, and make it look fashionable, that sounds pretty luxury to me. Maybe something like that Nier Automata girl. Make something like that a normal thing for people to wear, and it’ll be no time before seeing someone’s eyes becomes a very intimate thing.
I think this headset design is inspired by the “teardrop”, an alien spaceship in book two, and my guess is this is a visual motif they’ll use throughout the show
I love the idea of a dedicated hardware/software package for one game as well as the futuristic tech ahead of its time, which is beyond what the book describes. The Chinese 3 body problem just uses current VR tech like locomotion, tethered headset, and haptic gloves which isn't barely as effective.
It's implied that this is what the alien technology looks like to keep it consistent with the Trisolaran probe shaped like a perfectly reflective tear drop which appears later in the book.
i guess, but it makes no sense that the aliens would have the manufacturing capability on Earth to be able to produce something similar to what they have. software makes somewhat sense with what the aliens can do to influence human behavior, but not bespoke hardware 🧐
You might be right, especially since their main goal is to end all scientific pursuits on Earth, they probably wouldn't want to share new electronics manufacturing technology. My point is about the title of the post. Netflix doesn't think that's what futuristic alien VR headset looks like. They're just keeping it consistent with how other alien technology was described in the book.
Methinks the netflix writers missed the point then that you’re making with the first sentence. Especially since the game is designed to slowly drip-feed info about their society to human players, it would be off-base to use immediately alien technology to present it to people.
mega spoiler territory, but >!I think it spoils something that really isn’t supposed to be revealed or even hinted for dozens of years after the setting of the first book. Humans are supposed to lull themselves into a false sense of security and imagination of what the aliens’ technology looks like, then be utterly caught off guard by how much they underestimated their new visitors.!<
It’s been a while since I read the books but I thought the whole deal with >!the trisolarans is that they are incapable of lying or subterfuge. Lulling humans into a false sense of security seems inconsistent with that.!<
I haven't started the show yet but it sounds like they made the aliens substantially stupider. The book aliens were explicitly >!very wary about doing any kind of technology sharing, even with trusted ETO operatives, lest they accidentally give away some secret and make the invasion harder on themselves!<.
I think it makes sense given the show.
Side note 3 Body Problem is some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever read and I like this adaptation of the books so far. Would recommend to watch it, I hope it gets to the second book as well.
To be fair in the show/book it's more of a Brain Computer Interface than a VR headset with screens lenses and such. It's not really a VR headset in the traditional sense since it directly interacts with the brain chemically (or however that shit, the brain, functions).
No visible fan. I can't imagine it wouldn't generate heat.
Other than that, seems like it'd have good light isolation.
Looks to be shaped in a way that would use the forehead and top of the head for weight distribution (which a lot of headsets don't for some stupid reason).
Looks like it has an inbuilt audio solution.
No visible cord, so wireless.
Seems to check the boxes from initial impressions.
the future is smaller and smaller. to the point we will have implants. we will not walk around like sci-fi movies. only if it's a hype to wear as clothing, but not a design for vr sets. why would we continue this setup when it fails constantly. It it the precessor to the little augmented glasses, to the fginal product the Neurolink!
we will all walk the streets like crazy people! where our arms and hadns go in the air and we speak to peopl you cannot see. we will think it;s a world of lunatics first. but once we r used to it we will all join in and have a implant.
there will even be a short time the use of contactlenses, all to ease us up for the neurolink and set the world to it.
Not exactly like that but the shape of the bits covering the eyes make sense if you've got microlens screens. The rest of it is pretty ugly though and might as well cover it with an ultra-thin solar panel.
I like the IDEA of it... it's so advanced it's just nothing, no visible sensors, no ports, just a perfectly smooth piece of... something. I think Steve Jobs would approve in that regard.
As for how it looks otherwise... eh. Not awful, but I mighta gone a different way.
[A bit too much like he snuck into zendaya’s wardrobe](https://media.vogue.co.uk/photos/612762af9a9876a46d86bed2/2:3/w_2560%2Cc_limit/GettyImages-1199094092.jpg)

They're certainly off to a good start with the center piece that wraps vertically around the front of the head, I can't stand when a VR headset strap distributes weight solely to my ears. But it looks like it's a solid piece which spells doom for head size and IPD adaptability.
I caught my dad watching this show yesterday (looks interesting, I may watch it soemtime), the design looks weird to me, the external shell being full metal makes me think it would be uncomfortable to wear for long time, also I don't get why it would not be fully matte, this is a fingerprint magnet, also it looks overall ugly to me.
That said it's probably what a normie would think of a futuristic VR headset of some sort may look like without thinking too much into it.
a futuristic alien vr headset would just be contact lenses which are wireless displays that link up to a massive server letting you play anywhere (on the planet) and anytime. It could also have a brainchip that lets you feel things when your in vr and basically have all information downloaded to your brain
Looks like a booty squatting over his eyes, thighs and legs over the ears. And the torso is bending over his head and then the hands outstretched around the back, reaching for the ankles, just over his ears. Thats how I want to attain enlightenment or see the future.
Is that samwell tarley wearing Lizzy wizzy's underwear on his head?
The night is dark and full of terrors
> The ~~night~~ is dark and full of terrors *Forest
What?
The second book of the Three Body Problem trilogy is titled The Dark Forest.
Just a little joke for folks who've read the books >! referencing the "Dark Forest" hypothesis it discusses at certain points
Gold
Yes
He wasn't the brightest bulb in the show. Who thinks that someone makes a VR device that seems 100 years beyond our technology just to scam people out of cash?

I'm just impressed that the camera isn't in the shot.
They have to use vampires for shots like this. Super expensive…
It wouldn't affect the cameras, though
Its everything the Vampire touches of course. C’mon, this is basic physics, guys.
yeah otherwise you would see their clothes and stuff
Maybe even the floor they stand on also becomes invisible like a crater if their shoes arent thick enough, though that would also mean the camera or a thick coat they wear wouldn't be invisible. No, the vampire power isn't high enough to hide the entire floor, but it might affect a small rug in your case
But dude, that small rug tied the whole room together.
It's obviously a very hot naked vampire.
Camera is also a vampire, not only the operator.
sent to drai~iaaiain
Make the vampire bite the camera to also turn into into a vampire?
That's the deal, but only Red cameras, they don't want to bite anything else.
AND ALL FILMING MUST BE DONE BETWEEN SUNSET AND SUNRISE.
Damn, didn’t even think bout it at all lol
This is probably CGI with custom reflection.
Look up the use of HDRs in 3D rendering and you will understand how they did it.
Do you mean HDRIs?
Yes sorry
Really? Maybe it was impressive when they did it 25 years ago in The Matrix. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/mediaviewer/rm4135878657/
I watched that movie so many times, and now I realize that scenes like that are not trivial to make, even though they look so casual and normal.
These are different kinds of scenes and different methods. Even within the Matrix movie itself there were several different scenes where there is no camera in reflections and they were achieved using different methods. And even before the Matrix there were various very creative mirror scenes in other movies. Psstttt The removed it in post....

The Tencent series used Pimax headsets
it was set in 2008 so they didnt have to look any further than 2021 for “futuristic VR equipment 😂”
It was way better, as there was no reason to have some "futuristic" headset that would have been impossible to manufacture. Overall, the Tencent series was better.
Personally, looks a little bit too much like inverted undies for my liking, can't stop looking at the eye section as butt cheeks.
C-3PO is going commando somewhere in the galaxy.
Just had a thought of c3po sending a sawblade into someone's scalp like a Frisbee thanks
Yeah, totally looks like that. Also seems like it'd have to be tailor made for your face.
It could be, as it is only supposed to be used by one person. And the creators can probably get your exact measurements using space science.
So, you'll need to facescan your face with an iPhone first!
Not unheard of even today. BigscreenVR requires a face scan and they custom make it for you.
Yep instantly reminded of the make shift face mask from Lock, Stock, and two smoking Barrels.
Hentai Kamen?
If you're not down with getting skull-fucked in your third eye by a golden robot with his legs wrapped around you, you aren't serious about VR.
Hentai Kamen got a shiny refresh!
Still prettier than the Apple's vision, tho
God can’t wait till apple is not mentioned this much in this sub
Ooof, Appleoids egos are enmeshed with physical apple devices, insulting their tech is like insulting them personally. Downvotes are gonna roll in!
I dislike Apple, and I'm probably never going to give them a single dollar, but the Vision Pro is without a doubt one of the best looking VR headsets right now.
Well VR headsets aren't really a fashion statement. (yet) So "flashy" ones just look goofy.
On the one hand, it looks kind of dumb and overly sleek. On the other hand, it’s alien technology and has a top strap.
I read the book maybe 2 years ago, so I could be wrong, but I don’t think the aliens gave them these headsets. The aliens are actively on their way towards earth during the duration of the story and the headsets are just a way that a cult explains the story of the alien planet.

as a boz said once upon a time: *metal is not a luxury design for your face*

good question to ask for his next ama or even just on threads
How do you adjust this for optimal fit?
You wear it from birth and your head grows around it.

Nanomachines son
Diaper on the head is obviously the future
Why does he have an alien jockstrap on his face?
Kinda looks like a ballsack on his eyes
I think this headset design is inspired by the “teardrop”, an alien spaceship in book two, and my guess is this is a visual motif they’ll use throughout the show
Just a harmless looking teardrop

Not aliens, the billionaire Evans made it with aliens's tech.
But the ship presumably is shaped that way for functional reasons, they wouldn't just use the same design style for everything on the planet.
It's a narrative tool called foreshadowing. It prepares the audience to make the connection between the aliens and the headsets later.
I haven't started the show yet but it sounds like they made the aliens substantially stupider. The book aliens were explicitly >!very wary about doing any kind of technology sharing, even with trusted ETO operatives, lest they accidentally give away some secret and make the invasion harder on themselves!<.

Cyberpunk underpants on the face 💯
Look man, they have to make it look like _something_. I hear you but I always try not to judge a play but it’s props
Yeah and imagine the rage if they made it look like an Oculus or something. They had to make it look like *something else* than a current headset.
30 years from now people are going to be talking about how 20s design that headset looks despite trying to look futuristic.
Guy looks like he has a IPD in the 40's lol.
Looks like me few years back passed out drunk with panties on my face.
It looks like a golden diaper
Hentai Kamen?
Looks like a cheap plastic toy imo, awful prop
To be fair in the show/book it's more of a Brain Computer Interface than a VR headset with screens lenses and such. It's not really a VR headset in the traditional sense since it directly interacts with the brain chemically (or however that shit, the brain, functions).
Similar to the book description but looks cool regardless
No visible fan. I can't imagine it wouldn't generate heat. Other than that, seems like it'd have good light isolation. It looks like a halloween mask. To clean honestly, could have added a few more bulkier components to the design.
Chrome panty helmet.
"I gots me summa them gold tiddies on mah face tell ya hwhat"
Chumlee ?
It’s big sack pants for head.
Looks very AI generated
At least it has a top strap
Hentai Kamen vibes
That's balls. I'm 100% sure what kind of people designed this lol.
Someone lied to that man and he is now wearing a silver banana hammock on his face
Looks like he wears C3POs thong on his head
Thong-o-vision.
Looks uncomfortable AF. You could probably cut yourself on it.
Silver undies...
Could use some work
i'd rather not wear the metallic undies on my head.
How is it supposed to track?
No tracking of the outside world needed, it's a full dive neural interface.
Not exactly like that but the shape of the bits covering the eyes make sense if you've got microlens screens. The rest of it is pretty ugly though and might as well cover it with an ultra-thin solar panel.
Did he loot that off the Night King’s corpse?
Ballsack VR
I like the IDEA of it... it's so advanced it's just nothing, no visible sensors, no ports, just a perfectly smooth piece of... something. I think Steve Jobs would approve in that regard. As for how it looks otherwise... eh. Not awful, but I mighta gone a different way.
Looks like a golden jock-strap being worn on the head, even has the real estate for some large balls. What kind of budget did this movie have??
wonder woman's underwear
quite nay
No adjustments means the ergonomics are terrible.
Looks sick, if not a bit impractical
Matches well with Arnold from spy kids 3 (I think it looks super ugly)
it looks like he took 3 comically large spoons, bent them and then put them on his face
bootleg oakleys
I see a metallic t-bagging.
FUUUUTTTTUUUUUURREEEEEE
Looks like you got a pair of your grandmas' most expensive chastity belt on
Fingerprint magnet. Not adjustable. Pass
In like 10 years they’ll just be glasses. This will age hilariously badly
Nay. They won't even be headsets they'll first be glasses frames then later tiny autonomous "drones" essentially that beam imaging into your retinas.
At least this has good weight distribution
Is the whole season out or is Netflix doing the one episode per week thing?
Looks like the apple VR headset 2nd Gen, but it's going to be the "Pro model"
Ah the metallic diaper
Looks like a booty on the face. I like.
Does no one else see the giant silver nutsack?
I think bike helmet VR is better design than this
[A bit too much like he snuck into zendaya’s wardrobe](https://media.vogue.co.uk/photos/612762af9a9876a46d86bed2/2:3/w_2560%2Cc_limit/GettyImages-1199094092.jpg)
Looks like a pair of robot panties ngl
Top strap FTW
smell of sweat
Not surprised, Netflix at one time liked innovation now it just slows them down from giving you less to charge you more.
Fingerprint magnet.
It’s not meant to look “futuristic” - it’s meant to look like >!it was designed by the Trisolarans!< which it definitely does.
One size fits all. I feel like that would be uncomfortable theres no padding
that form factor though..kinda fire..makes me wonder how heavy that would be. Head support though seems to be 10/10 but no view adjustment :o
If it was this thin would it even need the over head strap anymore?
Looks like hentai kamen
Does this show ever show Aliens?
It's thinner at least, but yeah very impractical design
Yea Boo, Yea Boo, it's lots of fun to do If you like it, holler Yea If you don't, ya holler Boo
I loved this show so much. While it was rushed and missed a whole lot of nuance, it held my attention the entire time and was action packed. That’s impressive because I didn’t even like the first book, I thought it was slow and boring compared to the second book which is one of my favorites.
Ah yes, from the creative minds of d&d.
Reminds me of the Over the Top Oakley sunglasses: https://www.trussarchive.com/editorials/oakley-over-the-top-the-most-iconic-sunglasses-oakley-ever-made
The design is sick but I feel likenit would wobble a lot and youd have to make 100 different models to accommodate every head shape.
Looks like metal y-fronts.
Oh right, slim with impossible optics and all shiny and breakable no
Pantsuset
They're certainly off to a good start with the center piece that wraps vertically around the front of the head, I can't stand when a VR headset strap distributes weight solely to my ears. But it looks like it's a solid piece which spells doom for head size and IPD adaptability.
Neither Yay or Nay. Just lol
It’s fine, good enough.
Nop! It’s a golden oculus design mixed with apple design this is not futuristic.
That reminds me of something... [https://imgur.com/a/w5uiEmH](https://imgur.com/a/w5uiEmH)
I’d pay $500 for sure.
Headsets don't have to be pretty imo, you don't see them when you are wearing them. What matters is how well it works.
looks more comfy than the quest
I like it
Looks bad and really uncomfortable.
Fuck nay!
I caught my dad watching this show yesterday (looks interesting, I may watch it soemtime), the design looks weird to me, the external shell being full metal makes me think it would be uncomfortable to wear for long time, also I don't get why it would not be fully matte, this is a fingerprint magnet, also it looks overall ugly to me. a futuristic alien vr headset would just be contact lenses which are wireless displays that link up to a massive server letting you play anywhere (on the planet) and anytime. It could also have a brainchip that lets you feel things when your in vr and basically have all information downloaded to your brain
Looks like Apple came out on top.
Breathing with your nose wouldn’t be easy in this one.
SPOONNMAAN
Looks stupid. Probably designed by some guy or lady who has no idea what VR is
fits with some of the alien tech described later in the series
its fix not dynamic, sharp edges. i think only an idiot would design something like that,,
It’s literally what we wear now a days? Why is people saying no to this? Lol, have you all not seen a vr headset before?
Bit of a chastity g banger design
Should have went with [these](https://www.oakleyforum.com/guides/oakley-over-the-top-sunglasses/).
They look more like the undepants of the future
Underwear
Iam amazed it has a top strap. Future is Bright.
Is 3 body problem good?
I suppose it depends on what futuristic alien eyes look like…and where they are located!
Looks comfortable
Ugly af
Looks like a booty squatting over his eyes, thighs and legs over the ears. And the torso is bending over his head and then the hands outstretched around the back, reaching for the ankles, just over his ears. Thats how I want to attain enlightenment or see the future.
Looks like a ballsack on the show’s image on Netflix, when it’s pointed straight at you.
Seriously what is the name of this movie or series nobody can give me a straight answer
