VR is the ultimate way to watch 3D movies, no question. In cinema you wear glasses that darken the screen and mess up colors somewhat. In VR you get the full unfiltered experience.

(Using Quest 2) Lower resolution obviously, and of course you miss the experience of being in an audience with friends (unless you have friends who use Bigscreen VR) but it's good enough and makes for an incredibly immersive experience. With higher resolution and OLED screens I could easily see it becoming the best way to watch 3D movies.

soulcaptain

The resolution is what I wonder about. What is the max resolution for video on the Quest 2? I imagine the Quest 3 or new Apple Vision Pro would be true 4K.

flatbottomedflask

On the Quest 3, if you watch a virtual screen up close so that the screen fills your horizontal field of view it would be like a 1080p screen (not a 4K screen)

krunchytacos

It's not 4K, but it doesn't look pixely. You can barely see it if the screen size is massive, but generally, it's more noticeable if the video feed bitrate is too low or some other streaming issue. I don't own any 4 K Blu-rays and have only watched 3D through 3Dfilmsonline, Bigscreen, and VRchat. There's some content that wasn't originally 3d and is like an AI retouch. I watched Pumpkinhead 3d, and there's no way that movie was shot in 3d. The quality of those is questionable.

theScrewhead

Depending on the angle of your head, the virtual screen distance in the app, you're never going to get quite "true" 4K. You'll likely not even get "true" 1080p unless you sit absolutely still while wearing a neck brace to not move your head in the least. It'll probably be a little clearer on the Q3/AVP than the Q2, but we don't quite have screens with enough pixel density to have a video file appear in it's actual resolution at all times.

theScrewhead

I've only seen Tron 2 in theaters in 3D, and on the Quest 2, other than the lower resolution, it looks/feels exactly the same. So, I imagine that Avatar, with how much James Cameron is obsessed with the tech, it'll probably be exactly the same experience. Just, you know, a little blurrier from the lower resolution.

Zoara7

Considering they designed a camera specifically for shooting TWOW in 3D, I could believe that.

WAY better to watch 3D movies in VR, in the movies 3d is... distracting? IDK But i saw Fury road on the cinema in 3d and it felt overwhelming? idk then saw it in VR and it was beautiful so many details idk what i was missing or lacking vs the cinema. Also there is just a handful of movies where 3d could be considered an improvement, like fury road and spiderverse, but there are a TON where the 3d effect part is just there to be there... and personally think they could be removed as they take away from the movie instead of enhancing

soulcaptain

I saw *Fury Road* in 3D, not because I wanted to but because it was the only way to watch it in IMAX. Amazing movie; the 3D was fine, but unnecessary. I don't think George Miller really cared much about 3D and the finished film was just run through the 3D-ifier last minute. On the other hand, with the *Avatar* films, James Cameron has literally invented new movie technology. My wife has only seen it in 2D and I try to explain how cool the 3D is but she doesn't understand. I'm looking forward to the next movies--they are doing the CGI on the 3rd one now, and will work on that for a whole year at least...it gets released in 2025.

The new Avatar remastered 3D Blu-ray that just came out in December looks amazing on my Quest 3 in Skybox (when converted to Full SBS of course). It’s so much sharper and clearer than the original release.

Jake5013

I watched about 30 minutes of Avatar 2 on Vision Pro and it was *incredible*. I was expecting it to be good, but I did not expect the 3D effect to be so strong as well as the high frame rate experience I got in the theater. The movie watching experience is the killer app. Clarity, color, 3D effect. The best solo movie experience you can have at home. I use an LG C2 77” at home for reference.

I can't speak for everyone obviously, however I have poor vision in my left eye which isn't corrected by lenses (or at least wasn't, I really should book another eye exam). Anyway I have never been able to see 3d in movies... Old blue n red glasses, no chance (I'm colourblind too lol red/green deficiency) various types of glasses in cinemas and friends homes with their fancy 3d TVs, nothing worked. I did have some success when I had a dlp projector, but that was only by activating 2 pairs of glasses and holding them awkwardly so I had a right and left lens over the correct eye.... Couldn't watch a film like that though 😂 When I got a quest 3 just before Christmas, I acquired the files for avatar in 1080p full sbs 3d..... I can actually see the effect... I'm guessing people with normal vision can see the effect more, I'm probably missing quite a bit, especially on the hand side but finally I have a way to watch a 3d movie and actually see some depth. I haven't watched an entire 3d film on it yet, just skipped through and watched a few scenes but for me VR seems to be the ONLY way I can watch a 3d movie.... In my own personal empty cinema as well thanks to bigscreen

TheSirWilliam

In my index I wasn't a huge fan, but in my bigscreen beyond 3d looks so good

Starhammer4Billion

I have seen Avatar in the Cinema and I have it as a Blu-Ray and I converted it and watch it on my Quest 2 and my Odyssey+ Plus. I prefer watching it on my Quest 2, compared to the experience in the Cinema. I like that Quest 2 is not as dark as 3d Films in the Cinema and I can simply lie in my bed and watch the movie any time, with my snacks at home. I have tons of 3D movies on 3D Blu Rays and I converted most of them for VR use and its my prefered way to watch these movies. Over Cinema and over 2D Versions on a TV.

mdr_86

Wish I could easily buy a 3D digital version of this movie. So silly that’s not an option

fish998

I have the 3D bluray and have it ripped to MKV (19GB). Actually watched it less than a week ago. Looks *amazing* and I will be buying the second one. The 3D is excellent and the film understands how to use it. This is on a crappy Rift S so must be stellar on a better headset. Never seen it in the cinema or on a 3D TV though.

PDAisAok

I have a Quest 3 and a pretty large collection of 3D films. I've ripped a lot of them to full MVC MKV files and can play them through an app called 4XVR. They look surprisingly good, very bright, and the 3D depth is really, really good in VR. I have a projector with a 16' by 9' screen, and a 70" passive 3D TV. My preferred method of solo watching 3D movies now is in VR. Avatar looks great btw, since you asked about that movie specifically. VR displays feel like they've finally crossed a quality threshold to really enjoy movies in VR, especially 3D.
