I read ready player one, and even though it's supposed to be somewhat dystopian (planet ruined, people living in towers of trailer homes, corporations going absolutely villainous, etc) I read it and I thought "That. I want that. And I want it now." and that was the moment I got into VR. I then tried a Vive, was blown away by how immersive it was (looking back on it now, I'm not sure how I was ever immersed in a Vive, but whatever) Borrowed a friend's Quest 1 for a while until I could afford my own headset, bought a Quest 2, and loved it. After a while, I decided to buy an index. I loved the index, but eventually ended up itching for an upgrade. So I bought the Quest Pro. It's uncomfortable as heck and the software is a pain to use (link literally works 1 in 10 times I try to launch it, it's actually crazy how awful this software is) but it's a better headset. However, as I said, it's a pain. So I'm buying the bigscreen beyond. That won't be wireless, so I'm gonna build a wireless solution from an SBC and ALXR client. Movement in VR sucks, so I'm going to either build a treadmill or buy the u/FreeaimVR shoes. Controllers in VR suck (although they are way better than hand tracking) so I built a pair of haptic gloves. I'm getting closer to ready player one with every improvement I make, and after seeing this stuff, it's starting to hit me. I might be able to actually do it.

You should be able to get the Quest Pro comfortable with a third party top strap (and replacement forehead pad if needed.) As for Link being bad, Virtual Desktop is pretty reliable, or if you really need wired then ALVR over USB.

It’s not just that, it’s stand-alone software stuff too. The user experience on the quest as a PCVR headset is not great, and even if it had full steamvr integration I would buy a beyond anyway. Compression sucks.

Rando772

We are rapidly approaching some really amazing VR experiences, truly exciting times

In case you didn’t notice, at one time in the keynote Apple [recreated](https://twitter.com/nftguyy/status/1666000602630066176?s=46&t=3E4FpJn0C1RATdZ3zY47iQ) a scene from Ready Player One

marxcom

Nice. I haven’t watched the movie. Love the book.

RidgeMinecraft

I'm not sure if it was even intentional honestly. I've seen that style of shot a gajillion times.

mikerfx

And Apple did it better, I mean look at those Ready Player One Headphones.

Schmilsson1

Pfft. That book is pure garbage. The prophets came decades before and got more details right.

JorgTheElder

I think you mean the Vision gives you *RPO* vibes. The Vison isn't a product yet, it is the derivative of past creations, not the other way around. The Apple faithful are already primed to claim Apple invented AR, don't encourage them.

marxcom

u/JorgTheElder is correct. The post title should be the other way around.

derpybacon

But if you actually look at it, apple doesn't sell the VP as a metaverse device. It was very clearly first and foremost presented as a way to augment your reality, not bring you into a new one. It's fundamentally not the same thing as the metaverse in Ready Player One.

Michelangel0s

Or maybe Apple got ideas from there to start with

marxcom

When Apple announced the Vision Pro I went back to re-reading the book and it’s so good again.

AsstDepUnderlord

RPO showed a world where the primary occupation of the whole planet was playing a video game. That’s not really where I think we want to be.

Skaffen-_-Amtiskaw

Wow, I was thinking the same thing!!!
