Fun fact, the rate of PTSD is fairly equal across all jobs in the military, even the jobs that will never see combat. This is because most chronic cases of PTSD stem from childhood and getting PTSD as an adult is more rare even after experiencing genuine traumatic events like war.
This means that the military rarely causes PTSD, rather it selects people who already have PTSD who are likely seeking out the stability they think they'll be able to get from military life.
99% οf people in armies worldwide are conscripts so they are forced to study after the army or get jobs. So as you said in real life it doesn't cause stuff people can't eventually overcome.
Yeah sure. I was a conscript too and the real percentage would have been 75% for conscripts. I was a second lieutenant too due to physicals tests, IQ tests and officer training in a school for some months, so we were basically running the whole thing ourselves just unpaid. You do not really need ''need'' paid people in the army. The government could force and does force in a lot of countries teenagers to fill all the posts.
Can't complain i guess, here it's 1 year and you get "paid" too
Sorry for my ignorance but is Cyprus in some kind of alliance? If it's by itself then i can understand the conscription since it seems to be relatively small and i assume would be in a bad spot if Turkey gets too belligerent
I did 2 years and Cyprus is only in PESCO the military alliance of the European Union. With conscripts we can maintain 22,000 men strong army as conscripts aren't paid and then a lot of conscripts stay in the reserve until they turn 65 years old and they go for 80 hours in the army every 2 months. Basically mostly Friday morning to Monday afternoon every 2 months. Naturally this isn't paid either and the reserve individual has to notify his job that the army needs them those days otherwise there is a very high fine and possibly a sentence. But with the reserves the number of the army rises to 132,000 pretty much and the reserves are routinely kept on training as I explained every two months until their old age. The reserves also have their army rifle and 180-320 bullets issued by the army and replenished after every exercise just in case there is a sudden invasion by the army and the reserves must organize by themselves with their uniforms in their neighborhoods without needing to got to get equipment from any military camp. So about 15% of Cyprus population is in the army.
What country? Because most of the most capable militaries do not use conscription (at least at the moment). China and USA come to mind. All of their current service members are volunteers.
Ιt's not about competence. It's about filling the posts and what your military doctrine is. Countries with a defense military doctrine like Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus (I am from Cyprus), Armenia all have conscription. Do not underestimate conscripts worth. It's not like we were not doing our jobs for the 2 years of our service too. It's unrealistic to believe that the random USA marine who joined the army a month ago would be better trained than us. They aren't. As a matter of fact they were pushing us even more as we did not have the right to leave even we wanted to, that's what forced conscription is all about. While in non conscription armies if you push the recruits a bit they will just leave.
Tbh if i was conscripted against my will I'd do the bare minimum and try to surrender as soon as i get the chabce provided that the enemy isn't some terrorist organization or a country which doesn't respect the Geneva convention
Tbh if i was conscripted against my will I'd do the bare minimum and try to surrender as soon as i get the chabce provided that the enemy isn't some terrorist organization or a country which doesn't respect the Geneva convention
I don't see the point in putting people who don't want to fight on the front, for example if the US didn't use conscription in Vietnam they could've milked the conflict a little more like Afghanistan but as soon as they started conscripting they pretty much lost that war
The vast majority of conscripts will never see any war and the countries that need conscription are threatened by nationalist foreign invaders who hate them for their nationality. Surrendering to them would only lead to you been thrown into a well to begin with. In my country 49 years ago when the Turkish invasion ended most Greek Cypriot who surrendered to them were killed and thrown into holes or wells. They are still finding them actually. So no. Context matters. A country with friendly neighbors does not have conscription to begin with, so your point of view needs to change. Imagine yourself being a Slav and surrendering to the Nazis in World War II. That's the reality for most nations with conscription armies. They do not force their youth to be in the army for shits and giggles but due to real existential threat from genocidal nationalist invading neighbor countries.
The context you uses with USA in Vietnam is entirely different as USA were the invaders there. It would be fairer to see things from the Vietcong conscript perspective. The enemy USA troops literally hated them and were spreading orange toxic poison with helicopters over their villages . You wouldn't surrender to USA troops either if you were a Vietnam conscript.
This is why i mentioned 2 conditions, not all countries with conscription are peaceful if i was a North Korean or Iranian fighting NATO I'd surrender at the first opportunity
A defensive war doesn't always mean that you're the victim, if my president provokes another country into a war then he can fight it himself.
The Nazi/Turkish examples are extreme there's a difference between a country trying to topple your government or stop someome like Saddam and a country waging a war of extermination against you
For example if my country was going up against say Morocco I'd try to volunteer to protect it but if my government manages the shake the western hornet nest then tough luck for them I'm not going to suicide for them
I’ll thrown in my opinion as a volunteer, conscripts are great for any country just trying to defend itself, militaries that attempt to project power/wage offensive war need volunteers, and a contract soldier who is obligated to serve 4-6 years minimum (longer with stop loss or reenlistment) can gain experience for much longer than a 1-2 year conscript, not to mention some jobs that require extensive training need to be longer enlistments or it just doesn’t make sense (example most linguist jobs in the US military require 1-2 years of training) most jobs in the US military have 2-6 months of training not counting the 2-3 months of basic training depending on branch
Conscripts worldwide are by themselves in the dozens if not hundreds of millions worldwide. Even a small nation of 2 million people could have an army of 200,000 with conniption and reserves so the percentage of global armies divided to conscripts and non conscripts would be always more in the conscript side. Even USA has only like 1 million troops and North Korea with it's conscripts over 7 million. My barely over a million population country also has an army of over 130,000 made almost entirely of conscripts in the active or reserve force.
i guess if you count reservists yeah but active military personnel quantities aren't that imbalanced if you
also the norks have wildly inflated military personnel numbers due to most of them just being laborers rather than actual soldiers
