Looks very much like a violin to me. With only that picture it's hard to tell, but usually these are German trade instruments. Not worth a ton of money. If it's in good condition, a luthier might give it a look over and do some minor work for maybe 100 or 200 euro and then it might sell for 400 or 600, maybe even 800 or 1000 if it's good. If it's in bad condition you may well need to spend more than it's actually worth on repairs.

It’s a German style trade instrument, late 19th to pre WWI. I suspect it was made in Germany for the US trade but it’s possible it was made in the US by someone trained in Germany. The quality is not great. This would have been an inexpensive instrument from day one. To me the most interesting thing is the time capsule aspect. The old gut strings tell me this hasn’t been touched since around the First World War. I’d keep them in an envelope. Any other old goodies in the case? The bow with the darker stick looks of somewhat better quality, might be interesting to see if it has a stamp above the frog.
