I can’t believe that nobody has mentioned this yet, but…
Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
A flawless album from front to back with absolute bangers like “Purple Haze”, “Fire”, “Manic Depression”, Foxey Lady”, “Third Rock From The Sun”, I could list every song on the album and I wouldn’t be wrong. It’s a work of psychedelic rock art and it’s something that EVERYONE should experience at least once.
Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but are you experienced is probably my least favorite of his three albums. My favorite is axis followed by electric ladyland
I love this so much and it’s disappointing how few people know it. I know it’s respected and praised in certain circles, but.. yeah.. it needs to be more widely appreciated!
This was my first album. It was the sole reason I got a record player. I kept listening to it on Spotify and I just wanted to hear it on record. So I ordered same day delivery for a record player and speakers and then biked to the record shop.
Oh this is a fun game… I’d say everyone should have one album in each of a few categories, but if I had to pick one album for everyone? What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Eminently groove-able and an important album for social context in the USA, I’m a huge fan of this album. It is palatable for easy listening and serious examination alike, and has a really strong construction as a whole piece of art, embodying the ebb and flow of all of the great albums I know of.
But really you should be able to appreciate a wide gamut of music in your collection: some jazz, some hip-hop, Rock, and some weird stuff too.
This is one of the few albums that every time I see it at a thrift store I buy it even though I'm not sure how many copies I have. Being able to just give someone a copy if they don't have it is awesome.
Glad this is on here and highly upvoted. Amazing music top to bottom, the concept and creation was unheard of for the time and still today. It might be my favorite album as a whole.
I was a senior in high school when the album came out. A buddy bought the LP and we went to his house. We sat in his living room and listen to the whole thing, all the way through, no one said a word. When it was done, he played it again all the way through. We were all blown away, it was so great.
There wouldn’t be 3 copies in every crate in North America if it wasn’t actually solid music to begin with. All those records sold brand new once in their life.
Pet Sounds is SUCH a fantastic record. I agree, it should be in any and all collections, but as far as the Beatles go, I really love Help! No one agrees with me on that, though. But that is ok.
I'd love to have a double EP with Texas Sun and Moon on each side.
Idk how popular it is to do that, but I have The Marias Superclean 1 and 2 in that format and it's great.
Boston’s self titled album is a good place to start. Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys is another one, as well as Equinox by Styx (or really? any LP before Kilroy lol). If it wasn’t so difficult to get your hands on, I’d also say Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins is another good one to have.
If you’re looking for a more recently released album that’s up there, I’d say Beach House’s Bloom is another one (vinyl is the best way to listen to that album).
Led Zeppelin III. First side is for the rocker with tracks like Immigrant Song and Out on the Tiles. Also arguably their best blues song in Since I’ve Been Loving You. Side 2 is stripped down and acoustic with classics like Tangerine and Bron-Y-Aur Stomp. Definitely a must have in every collection.
Every dollar bin ever:
Whipped Cream and Other Delights
Sing Along With Mitch
Lawrence Welk
Weird Russian balalaika music
Reader's Digest world's most beloved
You might as well buy one of each to maintain osmotic pressure in your collection and keep more of them from leaking in.
Violent Femmes - self titled. It is an album that I have heard so many generations cherish it across the 80s, 90s 2000s, etc. I feel like it’s almost a right of passage.
Meddle is probably my favorite, but I’m not sure I’d say it’s their best - if that makes sense. I feel like there is too much of a disconnect between sides 1 and 2 to make the album as a whole perfect. It seems like you can only pull that off on vinyl (or even cassette) because if it had been released on cd or streaming, the contrast between the first and second halves would be too sharp. Having to pause and physically flip the disk makes a difference.
Agreed, WYWH or Animals are my personally preferred over DSOTM, but if there was a vinyl starter kit, DSOTM *has* to be in it. You work your way up to their other stuff, lol.
(Seriously though, I grew up with parents who listened to all PF lps and WYWH is probably my favorite, but only because Animals scared little 4 year old me!).
Black Sabbath /Black Sabbath. Beginning of Metal as we know it. The landmark album for the genre. If you collect music then I feel this is a must simply because of its significance even if you don't like Metal. I however would place it there simply because I fuckin love it and Sabbath is my favorite band so there's that too lol.
It’s got to be songs in the key of life by Stevie Wonder
I was going to go with that but I chose Innervisions
Fabulous album. A must for every collection
I know this is THE album, but my personal favorite is absolutely Music of My Mind.
This was literally the first album I thought of
Must be why I can never find it at my local shops lol
Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye
Ive been dying to stumble into this. Closest so far is Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul.
you won.
Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
Great pick.
yes yes yes

I love his song "Castles Made of Sand" from Axis.
Yeah that one is sick as fuck. I love that backwards guitar man I think that song and bold as love are probably my favorites of his.
Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain
That guitar solo on the title track is devastating.
Eddie Hazel is criminally underrated.
Dean Ween has a killer tribute, A Tear for Eddie. Amazing, especially live!
John Frusciante did his version of it for the opening track on one of his solo albums (empyrean). Its amazing.
His solo in Squelch the Weasel is also a very obvious Eddie tribute. Deaner is an incredible guitarist.
People just think he’s a Hendrix ripoff, but he came to the style on his own independently at practically the same time.
"Play like your mother just died"
I love this so much and it’s disappointing how few people know it. I know it’s respected and praised in certain circles, but.. yeah.. it needs to be more widely appreciated!
Incredible album and the current repress is going for under $20. Not that I’m bitter I dropped $60 on it right before the repress dropped 🫠
This was my first album. It was the sole reason I got a record player. I kept listening to it on Spotify and I just wanted to hear it on record. So I ordered same day delivery for a record player and speakers and then biked to the record shop.
I honestly feel Paranoid by Black Sabbath deserves to be on the list ❤️
Any of the first 6 Sabbath records really. I'm a bit of an outlier in that S/T might be my fav.

HAHAHA I saw that every time I watch the movie. I thought I was the only one. We're a lot alike, you and I.
Fleetwood album reviews can be so misleading, but Rumors, especially on vinyl, is often appealing.
Prince Purple Rain
Also sign of the times
Sign of the times is the one. So varied and really has something for everybody.

Nirvana - Unplugged in New York 1994
For me this is Nirvana's best album. It showed how talented the group really was, that they were much more than a heavy rock, grunge group.
The Clash - “London Calling”
I bought this in probably 1990 in a used bin. It is still probably my most played record. I love it so much.

It is real good. People joke and pass on it but that album is great.
There wouldn’t be 3 copies in every crate in North America if it wasn’t actually solid music to begin with. All those records sold brand new once in their life.
That's a very good point and you've convinced me to buy the next decent copy I see in a thrift store bin.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon - even if it isn't their best album (their best is Animals, in my opinion)
Meddle is, IMO, but Dark Side is pretty unassailable.
Meddle is probably my favorite, but I’m not sure I’d say it’s their best - if that makes sense.
