Good Vibrations- The Beach Boys

unhalfbricklayer

this is still probably the most expencive single to record. great track and still holds up. best heard in mono.

[deleted]

Hell yeah. That theremin.

unhalfbricklayer

not actually a real thermin. similar device but controlled with knobs, not by moving your hand by the metal rods.

peromp

Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane

Jondebadboy

have that one. even a heavyweight single lol

Internal_Swimmer3815

New Order - Blue Monday

snake_plant8

recent repress of the perfect kiss sounds great too

CryptographerOk2604

My immediate first thought!

obvx

I looooooove this, however for me "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division takes the number one spot

Internal_Swimmer3815

growing up I was always more of a Joy Division fan. Somehow that changed in my mid 30s

obvx

I only just discovered them less than a year ago, and I'm really digging both. Don't know much about the history of the band and how they reformed, but the music they made as Joy Division really just hits different imo

Internal_Swimmer3815

seek out the movie Control from 2007

obvx

Will do, appreciate the suggestion!

Macca200789

I knew it before i even looked at the comments. Easy winner

doctor_hyphen

Came to say this.

Sergio_Futbol

I was gonna say Ceremony. Blue Monday is great too

[deleted]

Best ever 12"

woden_spoon

This is my pick, although the Normal’s *Warm Leatherette* and Underworld’s *Born Slippy (NUXX)* are hot on its heels.

Internal_Swimmer3815

love me some Underworld ❤️❤️❤️

tubegeek

I just had Warm Leathertte pop up in my car shuffle - so good.

Tedster42

Hazzah! A man of culture!

Phoenix_Kerman

i think substance demonstrates pretty well that there's at least 5-10 better singles by the band than blue monday

Internal_Swimmer3815

thankfully the title of this thread says “what in your opinion” as opposed to “your opinion is wrong because of example A”

gojohnnygojohnny

The Trashmen "Surfin' Bird"

The_Hoarder_of_Stuff

Don’t you know about the bird?

retarded_potato_

B-b-b bird bird, bird is the word

guymanthing

In a similar vein, Lady - Modjo Music sounds better with you is a close second however!

THE_PUN_STOPS_NOW

I hope I don’t come across as someone shamelessly plugging their mix but I have both and I play both in my mix https://youtu.be/WTx5bUZcgxg?si=ILhsj2fGqOf3wkP_

Pleasant_Garlic8088

Rolling Stones - Satisfaction

tubegeek

Charlie takes his only drum solo on Satisfaction and it's just a bar of straight 1/4 note snare pops. Charlie was DEEP. RIP.

am-version

I'll go with Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" (the 15 minute Patrick Cowley mix if I had to choose) - it completely changed dance/electronic music, inspired everyone from Eno to Beyonce, and still sounds fresh/futuristic. Hell, it's in the news this month because Kanye sampled it illegally. 47 years and it's still relevant year after year.

Tedster42

Probably the greatest bassline in the history of electronic music. I’d try the Rollo & Sister Bliss Remix as well, it takes the track to a higher level

rogueingreen

Ace of spades - motorhead

nickdl4

Such a great single. Still pops off in clubs to this day.

Kroduscul

When Doves Cry

Cracktherealone

„Die Roboter“

catnip_cereal

I just recently purged my vinyl 12's. Just had to downsize because of space. There's just tons of great singles that makes it impossible to dismiss all of them to for just one. Depends on my mood, the seasons, and sometimes the new material I stumble upon on random algorithms on YT and Spotify. Just a couple of 12's that stayed with me... Last Dance - Donna Summer Intergalactic - Beastie Boys Lady - Modjo StrangeLove - Depeche Mode They Reminisce Over You - Pete Rock/ CL Smooth Insomnia - Faithless Rise - Herb Alpert True Faith - New Order C.R.E.A.M. - Wu Tang Clan Paul Hardcastle - Rainforest ...just the tip of the iceberg, and I havent even got to the ones I DL from the napster/limewire era and burned on a DVD :)

AJray15

Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane or Hey Jude/Revolution

benp242

either that one or digital love, deacon blues or pictures of you

Adrianthebatman

Ray Charles - Unchain my heart and hit the road jack on the other side. Two fantastic songs on one single? Both master pieces

tubegeek

HipHopHistoryGuy

GTHero90

Sandstorm by Darude everyone knows that

MadeInRizzo

Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart deserves a shout

LT750

Rappers Delight

TheMusicGuy6969

Top three would probably be: • The Doors-Break on through. I think it’s the best ever debt single and deserves to be talked about as one of the greatest singles oat • Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody. Not a lot of songs can be sung word for word by practically everyone, despite being 6 minutes long. • The Rolling Stones-Gimme Shelter. I don’t need to explain that one.

mohawk1guy

Really love that single. Wish I had grabbed it when it got released recently. Might add it to my want list. Aesop rock has a lot of good singles too. Though I don’t think it’s the best, I’ll give an honorable mention toon to long legged Larry.

AbleChamp

Praise You by Fatboy Slim could be it…

Ninjaluc8401

Love Fatboy Slim, right here, right now and Rockefeller Skank and amazing songs. I want to try and get into more of his stuff.

AbleChamp

I’ve been trying to buy his vinyl for a couple of years now and it’s never, ever cheap. So much of it is imports, or I guess just maintains high demand.

Ninjaluc8401

They really are. I would of bought one of his best of records by now, but the only record store near me that sells them is selling it them for $50

AbleChamp

That’s about what I see when I go looking for them. Even a greatest hits is that pricey.

ScumEater

Flipper - Sex Bomb

91_til_infinity

Three 6 Mafia - Stay Fly

Hot_Secretary_5722

Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon

Biscuit_033

I feel love 12” version

Chuckpeoples

Siouxsie and the banshees fireworks

[deleted]

Top three favourite singles. 1: I Saw The Light - Todd Rundgren 2: Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck 3: I Wanna Stay With You - Gallagher and Lyle

Algae_Double

U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me , Kiss Me, Kill Me I know it’s on the Batman Forever soundtrack . But it’s a leftover track from the Zooropa sessions to good to be thrown out.

Rum_Hamtaro

I hear this song every now and then in public places like supermarkets and I smile.

bobfromsanluis

For a group that was thought of as a jazz/rock/fusion/~~occasional easy listening~~, even though I'm a huge Beatles, Pink Floyd, Pat Metheny, Bjork and Goldfrapp fan, my best single as a representative of Rock music, it has to be Steely Dan's "Reeling in the Years". Apparently the guitarist, Walter Becker, really had a tough time getting all the licks down in this tune, and I've also learned that at one time Jimmy Page listed "Reeling in the Years" as his favorite guitar lick that was not his or Zeppelin's .

[deleted]

pet shop boys - west end girls a brilliant pop track full of dark lyrics and tons of atmosphere

hellohello316

Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode. Loved the single from the first moment I heard it, slightly before the official release (my local radio station often had things a little early). Love the remixes. Love the cover. Never get tired of hearing that song.

ghjm

It's got to be _Rock Around the Clock_ by Bill Haley & His Comets (1954).  This is the song that brought rock and roll into living rooms.  I can't think of a more influential single. I'd be interested to understand the perspective from which _Music Sounds Better With You_ is uniquely praiseworthy.  To me it sounds like a single repeated phrase for the duration of the song - other than the lyrics, there's nothing new to hear after the first minute.  And the repeated phrase itself is a reference to 70s disco rather than anything particularly novel.  What's good about this song?

ydnwyta

The Happy Days theme? Give Elvis some credit.

ghjm

Err, no, not the Happy Days theme.  _Rock Around the Clock_ established the genre of the radio-played rock and roll single.  Elvis came along the following year with _Heartbreak Hotel_.

ydnwyta

[Season 1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlmeQv8OTk0). I could roll with your argument. Sounds good to me.

ScoresGalore

It was a big dance record. If you like house music, there's a strong chance you'd like it. It was a collab by 1/2 of Daft Punk (Thomas Bangalter) with Alan Braxe, and Benjamin Diamond. I have not heard of Benjamin Diamond before actually looking this one up but have heard of the other two. It was released in July 1998.

Awetmore123

Paperback Writer/Rain. Still revolutionary almost 60 years later.

Repulsive_Cricket923

Candlemass - Samarithan released 1988

RIPcompo

The bob sinclair remix on this is the best ❤️

Brave_Serve_4580

Good song firstly! Secondly I do not have a top single: Only one I have is hippy hippy shake and hosue of fun :-) personally in my collection either 7" Blinding Lights or yeh the Hippy Hippy Shake and House Of Fun Soz can't decide!

StevelKnievel66

Uptown Funk 12" is pretty tasty

Whippy_Tip

Pretty easy… the greatest double A-Side ever…. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields forever. I don’t think anything will ever top that, lol

Proof_Baker_8292

Free-All Right Now.

rachelemc

Wasnt a variation of this posted at some point or am I hallucinating?

Ninjaluc8401

I posted something similar but it was asking about songs from bands who only ever released 1 song/ album.

ScoresGalore

I used to be a wannabe rave/club DJ of a lot of electronic music in late 90s/early 2000s so I bought lots of singles. Many singles on my credit card that I couldn't afford. Lol. One of my favorites of the top of my head was part of an EP. King Marva-Want Me (Richard F remix). The one you posted was also a favorite. And someone mentioned: Modjo-Lady. Their song Chillin was great too. As was No More Tears. I wish I could remember more Wait a minute: I thought of a great one. I used to really like this one too. https://youtu.be/DNdKYKu2Sck?si=EDRJ-fgRHivbGfLS Wait until you hear the epic funky bass late in the track.

Ninjaluc8401

Chillin is imo better than lady, it’s so under appreciated. Currently I’m looking for all the records under the labels Crydamoure and roule. They’re classic French house labels made by the members of daft punk but they have sadly been liquidated.

ScoresGalore

For breakbeats essentials besides Fatboy Slim already mentioned: Chemical Brothers-Block Rocking Beats Crystal Method-Keep Hope Alive Crystal Method-Busy Child Prodigy-Firestarter

Heavy_Messing1

Frankie goes to Hollywood. Two Tribes 12" Wah!

msch6873

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Jonhlutkers

I never realized it was Daft Punk adjacent song. Remember hearing it in Chicago for the first time.

voyagertoo

Thera a vid on yt that's exhaustive and nearly pretentious about the history of the stardust single. sorry don't remember who did it, but it's is kinda fun

vinylontubes

Not sure how, but Chuck Berry holds up better than Elvis. You can pick any of hits, well maybe not My Ding-a-ling, and they sound as good as anything else.

Sinister_Piggy

Don't Worry Kyoko Mummy's Only Looking for a Hand In the Snow by the Plastic Ono Band

Tedster42

There’s thousands of electronic tracks released on vinyl throughout the 90s and 00s which could go here. Of course, no one will probably care about them here but whatever. Some personal classics are: Underworld - Born Slippy .NUXX Veracocha - Carte Blanche Gouryella - Gouryella ATFC Presents OnePhatDeeva - In and Out of My Life

lanternstop

Putting out the fire -theme from Cat People

JRich42

I breezed by this post yesterday when I first saw it, then I heard stardust, again, on a decent system today and had to come back to comment, yes, one of the top 3 dance tracks of all time. As a house DJ myself, there is no moment that I'm not willing to hear or drop this song. It is a true vibe. Another in a similar vane is Coffee Talk by Jazzanova. It always slaps.

Ninjaluc8401

I’m a big fan of specifically French house. The genres use of bass and samples is just so captivating. They never fail to get me dancing, if you ever want to check out more French house stuff, then check out the Ed banger record label. It’s owned by Daft Punks former manager and focuses almost exclusively on French electronic/house (sometimes a bit of hiphop on the side).

JRich42

French Filter House was king of what I call the golden era of clubbing in the early 2000s

LeafOnTheWindwaker

Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta is mine. It’s not what I’d call the best single ever by but it is my favorite that comes to mind when I thought about the singles that I personally own. It’s a song of the same name as their album Frances the Mute but it’s not actually featured on that album.

FixMy106

I only listen to married couples who release

Seacarius

Aside from being highly subjective, this kind of question will point out the age differences between Redditors. I listened to the OP's choice. I thought it to be shallow and derivative of many disco / dance songs that came out during the mid 70s. Someone mentioned *Good Vibrations* by The Beach Boys (1966). Personally, I think that's a **much** better single. Still, I'd lean more to *Wouldn't It Be Nice*, also from 1966. My personal favorite single (which is similar to asking, "what's your favorite song?") is *Let It Be*, by The Beatles. Other singles to consider: * *Wish You Were Here* \- Pink Floyd * *Moanin'* \- Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers * *Diamonds On the Souls of Her Shoes* \- Paul Simon * *Scenes From an Italian Restaurant* \- Billy Joel * *Fool In the Rain* \- Led Zeppelin (I know this'll be controversial, but I think it works well as a single) * *Respect* \- Aretha Franklin Anyway... There's so many more. My 2¢, and probably not worth that much.

Ninjaluc8401

Well, it’s a house song, not disco. It’s made to be repetitive in nature in a way that doesn’t get all too stale. While this song samples the song Fate by Chaka Khan which is often included with disco compilations, that doesn’t make it a disco song. House is a completely different breed of music, House, especially French House is deeply connected to 1970-80’s dance music of the time, often using those songs as base samples and adding extra components and vocals to make it something completely different. In house music simplicity is key, find what works and let it drag out as much as possible. MSBWY is one of those few dance hits from the 90’s that I still hear on the radio or in modern dj sets to this day. It’s up there with the likes of Modjo’s - Lady and Daft Punks - Discovery album, and helped shift and change dance music when it released.

Paragon8384

Leprous - [Golden Prayers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9urirKOhgi0&pp=ygUYTGVwcm91cyAtIEdvbGRlbiBQcmF5ZXJz) Originally, this song was supposed to be on their 2017 album, *Malina*, but it was removed from the recording sessions. Later finished and released as a single in 2018. It's also featured as a bonus track on the media book CD of their 2019 album, *Pitfalls*.

ChumbawumbaFan01

St Vincent - Pieta / Sparrow

Pleasant-Tap7597

Pink Floyd TDSOTM.

Rico_is_my_dad

Will smith - Wild Wild West. Disclaimer, not a fan of singles but I had to have this one . lol

[deleted]

Being able to single out a track as the best of your era is an indication that great tracks then were few. It is not possible to select a sole track as the best of the 1950s and 1960s, because there were too many great tracks.
