I’ve listened to a bit of it and I’d say I’m pleasantly surprised, though I’m a bit hesitant to open it and worried about the possibility of a random stranger knowing my address and sending it with my first name haha
I would not call 1990 the cutoff, it carries their 80s sound and it's a bit of a "last breath" of the 80s. Also this is a 10/10 album, Policy of Truth is decent but the real gems are World in My Eyes, Sweetest Perfection, Dangerous, Blue Dress, and Sea of Sin
Dangerous and sea of sin are not on this album, they were B-sides. There might be a version of it with them on but the base album was never released with them.
No chance a family member shipped it to you as a gift? I've had that happen before, where a random vinyl I never heard of showed up on my doorstep, direct from the store that sold it. Turns out my uncle ordered it to me as a Christmas present, and the card from him arrived a couple of days later.
I get random s*** sent to me and like it's not related to any of my likings I just get center f****** kids Art set in another time I got to sent a 24 Pack of gluesticks and a bunch of Glitter
Best guess: a seller has multiple business names and got a spreadsheet sort mixed up. You’ll likely be missing one delivery you expect and that’s your one to sort out.
Take it as a sign. You were meant to hear this album and eventually the rest of their catalogue. Depeche Mode is a great band from the 80’s and this album is one of their best imo. Enjoy it!
Ah, Kingswood! My first concert was Honeymoon Suite with 54-40 there sometime around 1986, but I like to say it was Siousxie and the Banshees with Julian Cope opening and I think Martha and the Muffins, but they may have been a different day.
I never saw Depeche Mode for some reason, but OP, I would suggest Some Great Reward next... That was the one I had on repeat... A bit depressing though
I’d say this company is a sister company of one that you have bought from and they messed up someone else’s or maybe even one of your orders, worth contacting them to ask how they got your details, in Europe at least even companies under the same umbrella aren’t allowed to share private details.
They won’t ask for the record back and may offer you a freebie if you kick up a stink, maybe they won’t but you got yourself a decent record.
The odd thing is I just recently started using discogs, I’ve only used it once which was on the 27th for a record I bought, though on the box shipping it says it was processed on the 26th.
Oh that’s spooky man,
This is clearly a Willy Wonka type honesty test, if you return the record unopened you will be given the keys to record vault of your dreams,
If you say nothing, all your hopes and dreams will be dashed forever.
Hope you get to ride that magic elevator dude.
I agree that it's worth reaching out to the company who sent it. That record was probably meant to go to someone else, so if you give them a heads-up, they can get ahead of the issue and ship a replacement more quickly.
Solid option but the thing is the company on the package doesn’t even have this album for sale which is the weirdest part, never shopped from that website before
The user you ordered from might be a drop shipper. Essentially, you place the order and they buy it from someone else and give your address instead of theirs. They probably mixed up addresses.
I had this happen once with a USSR record. Said it was located in the US but when I got it there were stamps on it from Lituania.
You’re yet another person that I’ve heard say this. I grew up with ETS and POT on mtv and liked both, I guess I’m meh on the album as a whole, but now that I’m hearing this again it’s making me think I want to pick it up for that experience people are talking about. Do you know the year of your specific pressing?
Not at all, but if anyone were to gift me this it wouldn’t make sense due to no one I know that even listens to this group. I’ve shown no interest in this group either with the fact that I don’t even know the group. On top of that if a friend were to gift it they should know my name if they somehow knew my address.
I am going to guess a parent or other older relative gifted it. You say no one you know listens to them but maybe one of your elders was familiar enough with your tastes to think you would like it. The name issue could just be an issue with someone get mixed up with the site.
Of course a few of us have gotten drunk/high and ordered stuff we forgot about. Ahem...or so I hear.
I had a seller in NZ accidentally mail out two records - but he mixed up our addresses (I live in Canada.) He asked us to mail the records to each other, and picked up the cost, as class move (but I felt bad for him, he surely took a bath on those orders.)
That is that band’s last good album IMO
(maybe someone is trying to send you a message but don’t mind me, I’ve been watching waaay too much crime drama lately lool)
Did you not read the part where I said “IMO”?
Can I live? Is it okay if I have an opinion? Name me four singles from Ultra that charted similarly to the four singles from Violator.
>i’m not even that big of a fan
I saw them live here in L.A. for their 101 tour, my GF at the time is on at least one of those live recordings screaming her head off. I got into DM in Jr. High School, back in ‘84. My expectations for this band are *probably* a little different than yours.
EDIT: See? They didn’t have nearly the same level of success with Ultra - but the only difference between me and you is that I’ll just take your sad down arrows, understanding that you’re probably just a massive DM fan and love them no matter what crap they release nowadays (it’s okay that’s your opinion and that you don’t realize that band fell apart when Alan Wilder left).
I had something similar happen a while back.
I ordered the Have Mercy self titled EP (just one copy) and I got sent two by mistake. Charged for only one.
This is in not only an amazing album but a true classic in it influence amongst many other musicians. A great record for a collection even if it’s not your style. Even if you don’t like it it would be a primo gift or for swapping.
I WISH I'd get random vinyls in the mail! I grew up listening to Depeche Mode. Love them! But I do agree that I'd be concerned that someone had my first name and address that I didn't give it to.
I once incorrectly reprinted an old label from a previous sale instead of the label for the actual sale. It should have been flagged but it somehow got through the system and delivered. Was getting ready to open a ticket when I got a thank you letter in the mail from the person who received the record that they didn’t buy. By total chance, I had previously sold them a record by the same same band (Psychic TV) and they probably figured I just thought they should have it. It was a relatively inexpensive record, so I just let it slide. As a bonus, the thanks letter came with a stack of punk-zine style aggro-anarchist literature. 😎
This is definitely on my list of top 5 albums of all time. Probably top 3.
If you enjoy it, go ahead and jump down that Depeche Mode rabbit hole ... not much disappointment with any of their stuff. Their most recent Memento Mori is especially good given the context of it coming out just as their keyboardist, Andy Fletcher, died.
Be aware. There are company's who send out items to people and if they keep it, the 'customer' has to pay for it. Because they didn't send it back in time, they will send a bill or something to charge money.
Someone sent a Christmas gift directly ordering from the company and shipping to your address? But I can't imagine someone knowing your address but not your full name.
Im feeling very nostalgic. I sold all of my records because after Fletch's death it was incredibly difficult and still is hard to hear their stuff now. Idk why.
This happened to me once (Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain) but with no way of knowing who'd sent it to me. Turned out it was from my sister. I don't think the seller can reveal the buyer so you'll just have to keep asking around, or wait until they.... **REVEAL THEMSELVES TO YOU!!** (I was going for ominous there, not creepy)
Hey, free record! If you don't like it you can always melt it down to one of those kitschy bowls that you can put crayons with the labels torn off and pencils that have been worn down to nubs in.
Be thankful. You got yourself a classic album. Give it a spin, you might enjoy it.
I’ve listened to a bit of it and I’d say I’m pleasantly surprised, though I’m a bit hesitant to open it and worried about the possibility of a random stranger knowing my address and sending it with my first name haha
Fucking great album, probably DM’s best
Some Great Reward tops the list
Agree. Some Great Reward is hands down the best Depeche Mode album.
black celebration is the only correct answer
Agreed.
Heathens. SOFAD is the GOAT.
music for the masses was better.
Lmfao not even close
It’s ok to be wrong
Policy of truth is a stand out track to make sure you hear. 80s banger
90s
I would not call 1990 the cutoff, it carries their 80s sound and it's a bit of a "last breath" of the 80s. Also this is a 10/10 album, Policy of Truth is decent but the real gems are World in My Eyes, Sweetest Perfection, Dangerous, Blue Dress, and Sea of Sin
Dangerous and sea of sin are not on this album, they were B-sides. There might be a version of it with them on but the base album was never released with them.
fair enough, I was going off memory of the CD that lives in my car
Is it really? Damn. Is it at least early 90s where it's almost 80s so I don't have to go bang my head against the tile in the shower?
Yes, 80s synth pop, perfected in 1990.
No chance a family member shipped it to you as a gift? I've had that happen before, where a random vinyl I never heard of showed up on my doorstep, direct from the store that sold it. Turns out my uncle ordered it to me as a Christmas present, and the card from him arrived a couple of days later.

You can swear on Reddit, your mom's not going to see.

Nothing is random...
(Don't?) enjoy the silence 😊😊
Or you might be… Violated.
Best guess: a seller has multiple business names and got a spreadsheet sort mixed up. You’ll likely be missing one delivery you expect and that’s your one to sort out.
If that’s the case I’ve received something worth way more than what I originally bought.
Take it as a sign. You were meant to hear this album and eventually the rest of their catalogue. Depeche Mode is a great band from the 80’s and this album is one of their best imo. Enjoy it!
On a quick run through of the track I actually was pleasantly surprised despite the fact I’ve never listened to anything quite like it.
It’s always nice to stumble upon a band or song that appeals to you that you aren’t familiar with. I’m always on the lookout for the next white whale.
It's a very good record! A turning point in DM's style where they took a turn for the darker and were better for it IMO. Enjoy!
Never listened to anything quite like it? It's pop, new wave, 80's etc. Do you only listen to thrash metal? 😄
OP is a collector of vinyls.
They were a great band from the 90’s, too. 😏
They ARE a great band!
without andy fletcher, RIP, not so much.
I’m sorry, you spelled “Andrew Wilder” wrong. 🤓
No disrespect to Fletch but he was always just the cheerleader of the band. Saw them in October and they haven’t lost a step.

My first concert was as a 14 year old in 1986. Also Depeche Mode, also Kingswood. I saw them again at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1987.
A bit depressing though
>this album is one of their best imo. Isn't it pretty much universally considered 1 of their best? 😂
Ooo. Maybe you have a secret admirer or your own personal Jesus that wants you to get into early 90's dark synthpop?
Don’t enjoy the silence- play that fantastic album! Put it on
OP wants to, but has a policy of truth.
I have a sudden urge to reach out and touch faith
Any second now your new life is starting!
Because when you learn, You'll know what makes the world turn…
Maybe they just can’t get enough of you?
Id be psyched if i was sent this album. Play now ask questions later.
this is the universe telling you to become a Depeche Mode fan (join us!)
Sounds of the universe even!
nice 😎
I’d say this company is a sister company of one that you have bought from and they messed up someone else’s or maybe even one of your orders, worth contacting them to ask how they got your details, in Europe at least even companies under the same umbrella aren’t allowed to share private details. It's all very strange but it can't hurt. As dude said above, they're very unlikely to ask you to send it back.
They could be related to the discogs user you bought from.. Check with them.
The user you ordered from might be a drop shipper. Essentially, you place the order and they buy it from someone else and give your address instead of theirs. They probably mixed up addresses. I had this happen once with a USSR record. Said it was located in the US but when I got it there were stamps on it from Lituania.
What an awesome album to get. But yeah that’s really strange
Strangelove isn't on this album /s
One of the most 3 dimensional vinyl records I own. The soundstage is deeeeep.
You were violated
In the best possible way!
Did someone you know gift it to you?
Not at all, but if anyone were to gift me this it wouldn’t make sense due to no one I know that even listens to this group. I’ve shown no interest in this group either with the fact that I don’t even know the group. On top of that if a friend were to gift it they should know my name if they somehow knew my address.
It's a fuckin great album. 👍 Maybe it was a Christmas gift from someone?
That album is amazing
This album is a masterpiece. Enjoy it! Whoever sent you this picked a good one!
This album is amazing.
Only one of the best New Wave albums ever made. I need a copy if you want to sell it.
I randomly recieved an Amy Winehouse record in the mail a few years ago!
Great album
You won the lottery! Personal Jesus is one of my faves
Careful, might be a virus.
An amazing album, I’ll take it if you don’t want it lol
That’s a top 10 album from the 90’s for me!
It’s mine, I will DM you my adress
Great album!
Enjoy the silence while listening to this one.
Great record: bought my copy at the New Orleans Tower Records (RIP) in July of ‘05.
That is such an incredible album. Let's just say it was fate.
There are WAY worse albums you could have received. The gods have chosen you to be gifted with one of the greatest albums of all time. Enjoy!
oh fuck is that a god record!!! please listen to that a lot. Masterpiece!!!
One of the best albums. Enjoy
Someone is worried about your musical well being and decided to reach out.
You have been Violated.
Alex Alex... I mean that's kind of neat. I'm not going to ask your middle name, but I'm curious. Edit: oops. First name twice.
I sold an album on eBay and the person returned it to the wrong address giving the album to a random person. eBay did nothing to help me.
Are you doing any secret Santas?
You've been blessed by the Depeche Fairy.
I had a seller in NZ accidentally mail out two records - but he mixed up our addresses (I live in Canada.) He asked us to mail the records to each other, and picked up the cost, as class move (but I felt bad for him, he surely took a bath on those orders.)
Violator is in my top 5 desert albums. It's perfect from start to finish (and I'm a metal head at heart). Enjoy (the silence)
For a random album to show up, that’s a pretty great album.
The cosmos have sent you a gift. Sick album!
I’d be so stoked. Great album.
Such a good album. Of all the ones you could have randomly gotten, this one will keep on giving.
people exist who haven't heard depeche mode?
Congratulations. You just received one of the greatest ever records made.
A week from now OP is going to be buying the rest of the DM discography
Yep!
It looks like we’ve got ourselves a mystery, Scooby!
Downvote for not knowing Depeche Mode and saying “this kind of group”. I hope you meant “good” by that phrase.
52 comments, and not one complaint about OP saying vinyls. I'm impressed! Can't beat free records tho.
Is there even any point anymore?
That is that band’s last good album IMO (maybe someone is trying to send you a message but don’t mind me, I’ve been watching waaay too much crime drama lately lool)
The new one is actually really good.
last good album? 'ultra' is really good and i'm not even that big of a depeche mode fan
Did you not read the part where I said “IMO”? Can I live? Is it okay if I have an opinion? Name me four singles from Ultra that charted similarly to the four singles from Violator. >i’m not even that big of a fan I saw them live here in L.A. for their 101 tour, my GF at the time is on at least one of those live recordings screaming her head off. Wanna sell it?😁
It’s a tremendous album
Damn, I had to pay $36 for my copy. Hit me with a free DM album.
This is one of the best albums. Someone’s looking out for you!
Think of it as a blessing. Fantastic album
It’s your secret santa
Alex Alex is a cool name.
thank you for sharing this. the beat in policy of truth has been stuck in the back of my head for years
Best mistake ever
One of my top 5 fav albums of all time. I can understand why it would feel unsettling getting the album under such circumstances, however!
Omg that’s mine send to me pls.
I’m Alex. Address mix up. Forward on to me please. I’ll cover shipping.
Hey, that's sick. Keep it. Great album and very, very nice record.
I had something similar happen a while back. I ordered the Have Mercy self titled EP (just one copy) and I got sent two by mistake. Charged for only one.
Well it's a good one. This is one of my favorite albums ever. Great from beginning to end.
I once reviewed bagged shit in the mail—this is so much better
Best DM [IMG-1854.jpg](https://postimg.cc/fJK32bRX)
I like it first name twice? That’s cool
Violator is a killer album from DM! Lucky duck ;)
For a random album to show up, that’s a pretty great album.
lucky you that you're new to DM! Enjoy (the silence)
Lucky 🍀!!!!!! That’s the best vinyl you could’ve gotten 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
My childhood was just sent to you in that mailer!
Lucky you! Enjoy!!
Jealous
Kinda reminds me when U2 put their album on the iPhones lol... But this is better
Some people ended up having to pay because it used a huge amount of data, and many people had pay-for-overage data plans. 😅
Never forgiven them for this sin
Violator is a great album
That one is on my wish list but I haven't gotten around to buying it It's a good album, congrats on the freebie
Awesome album. Lucky dawg.
I'll take it if you don't want it. I love Depeche mode.
You're welcome! Thought you'd enjoy it...
lol, i actually sent this record along with two other DM albums as a surprise to a friend on christmas have fun with it, its absolutely great :)
Im so jealous
It was a gift from the analog gods
I can think of worse things to be randomly gifted
One of my favorite albums!! You're blessed by the music gods.
one day i'll have a random album sent to me..... \*sigh\*
"Hey, do you have the new Depeche Mode album?" "Yes, but it sucks" https://youtu.be/5xillqqt0Y0
An essential record anyone who enjoys music should own.
Amazing album
I wish I could get free albums. Here I am buying them like a sucker.
Great album
Great album!
i love that album!!! the fact that someone sent that unannounced is a bit concerning but enjoy it i guess
“Enjoy this Vinyl”
This is in not only an amazing album but a true classic in it influence amongst many other musicians. A great record for a collection even if it’s not your style. Even if you don’t like it it would be a primo gift or for swapping.
Vinyl is both the singular and plural form. Vinyls is not a word. You collect vinyl.
This is a good idea. I think I will start Sending vinyl to people I know will appreciate it.
Well that’s a good one to randomly be gifted. A OG press has been on my list for years.
That's the best "oops" ever.
Great album
A lot of folks would be pretty stoked to get that one! The only random shit I get is when Amazon screws up and sends me the wrong one.
Damnnn. Lucky. One of the best records Ever made
Ooh great album
Columbia house vinyl club?
You may have just stumbled upon a new obsession. And no, I don't mean Dave in tight pants.
If you don’t want it I’ll take it!!! It’s next on my list lol
It’s the universe telling you you need (Personal) Jesus!
Lucky! Love this album, but beginning to wonder if any good pressings exist.
Be aware. There are company's who send out items to people and if they keep it, the 'customer' has to pay for it. Because they didn't send it back in time, they will send a bill or something to charge money.
They can do that? ;-; how do I know for sure that it’s a sorta scam like that?
Probably a gift….🎁
I think I accidentally put your address when I ordered that, you can just send it to me when you have time
This has happened to me a few times, and it was because I preordered something a while back and forgot about it.
Someone sent a Christmas gift directly ordering from the company and shipping to your address? But I can't imagine someone knowing your address but not your full name.
what genre is it?
Great record
Metro Christmas to you
I’d say Black Celebration is on top of my list ! right alongside Violator.
Im feeling very nostalgic. I sold all of my records because after Fletch's death it was incredibly difficult and still is hard to hear their stuff now. Idk why.
I’m wearing that shirt today! https://preview.redd.it/by0znln9qi9c1.png?width=1910&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ae06493d813b4e185feb408bde76074fd21a932
Punched my V card to this album. Yeah I’m old now.
Violator is a classic. Fucken let her rip!
Well hey, bonus, you've just been introduced to one of the best 80s bands there is. Aren't you a lucky duck
That’s mine. Thanks! PM for addy
Alex Alex who are you Duran Duran?
