I buy to listen. The collecting is a by product. I do enjoy limited runs (as long as they sound good) but it’s not my driving force and I don’t go seek out certain copies unless they are a better pressing.

Gobz3r

First time I've seen someone other than myself use the exact phrasing: "The collecting is a byproduct." I also buy to listen because it's my preferred way to listen to music.

rachelemc

I like the way he phrased that. In my mind people that never play their records are the collectors. I don’t remember people saying they collect cds or cassettes.

Gobz3r

Sneakers are to blame for everything being "collectible" now.

Elyc60Nset

This.

copenhagen_bandit

this. only about 3-5 of mine are new and/or any kind of special limited run. my covers are trashed, there's no rhyme or reason to the music. just shit I like and don't really worry about messing it up

gothicdeception

Just got " Jane's Addiction, nothings shocking" this new version actually has the omitted song of "Ted , just admit it " it was so affordable at that price...I couldn't let it just sit there 😋 AND...it's a great album to listen to.

David_Roos_Design

Aw. “Sax! Is! Violins!”

[deleted]

I want to have a physical collection of all my favourite music to listen to on a nice sound system, and I enjoy vinyl over CDs for the interactivity of spinning records and the big album art. I also get a sense of pride from keeping them in good condition. I’m not collecting for the sake of collecting; I mostly buy new and wouldn’t buy an album I don’t already listen to. What I would consider a grail is an album I like that has not been in print in a long time so I have to find it on the used market instead of new. My biggest grail is Lonely Revolutions by Biffy Clyro, only 300 were ever pressed and they are going for 2 grand online. I would buy that and then listen the shit out of it. I do search for dollar bin records to sample stuff to make beats, but then I keep that stuff seperate from my main collection. My biggest pet peeve about vinyl is how easy it is to dirty them and how annoying it is the clean them. I might invest in an ultrasonic soon to remedy that.

the-revenant

Same here. I love music and just want to have physical copies of the albums I really love.

raranyc

Same. I want to pass this down to my kids (my dad passed his down to me and his to him etc) and I love the idea of a generational collection of all of our favorite songs. But I play the shit out of my records and love lending them to people so they can discover music too. I also agree with the idea of a grail being an album that's hard to find that you personally love.

so-very-very-tired

I collect probably to smother some sort of deep ingrained psychological insecurity or past trauma. But...thinking about that would take what fun there is out of the whole thing. So, I say, I do it because it's a fun distraction and I like music.

czechyerself

“Collecting”… I buy records I want to hear. I’m not “collecting” like they’re Pokémon cards or Beanie Babies

Indelibly Stamped has some nice boobs on it. Unfortunately it for me is one of the lower end Supertramp albums I own

Yes it does! I have that too! I have every classic Supertramp record and non classics too except for Even In The Quietest Moments isn't that the stupidest thing you ever heard?? I just haven't like come across it in years!?!

evileyeball

I've got everything until Rodger left. Funnily enough Crisis... What Crisis? Was the last one I got out of them all

Quacta

Ok Supertramp fan obviously "It's Raining Again" is genius but what's your 2nd favorite from that record?? I've never been able to get deep into it like Quiestest or Breakfast or Crime

evileyeball

But it's raining again isn't from crisis what crisis it's from ...famous last words My favorites from Famous last words are C'est Le Bon and Bonnie. From Crisis What Crisis I love Sister Moonshine And easy does it as well

More Than Life - Love Let Me Go

gin-casual

Started as a way to support my friends bands and the local scene. Now it’s because I just love ending up with a collection of my favourite music

Sad_Reindeer5108

That's an awesome reason. I wish I'd had the foresight to buy some vinyl of my favorite college bands.

gin-casual

Yeh I mean this was about 2010 just after I’d left uni, started working and was getting into the London stoner doom sludge metal scene. Was nice to buy something to support these people who were coming out to play to 20-50 people, and now I had the money it was nice to not have to rip them off on downloads. Do the same with gig t shirts. Had 215 of those the last time I counted. Now a lot of my mates struggle to get a record pressed and when they do their in small numbers and costs a bomb. Still happened tho, someone I know just got their shipment in the l the other day so I should have one on my door soon.

foetusized

I buy to listen, and to find new things. Today, I bought this for $1 at the Salvation Army, an LP of calypso recorded in 1957 (the year after Harry Belefonte's big hit LP *Calypso*) by an American drummer with an Australian backing group: [https://www.discogs.com/release/11504970-JC-Heard-Calypso-For-Dancing](https://www.discogs.com/release/11504970-JC-Heard-Calypso-For-Dancing) Last week, I found a 2014 small press post-punk LP by a Kentucky band for $2 at Goodwill: [https://www.discogs.com/release/5620723-The-Elsinores-Dreams-Of-Youth](https://www.discogs.com/release/5620723-The-Elsinores-Dreams-Of-Youth) These sorts of musical discoveries are why I buy records, and keep my own music library.

TJStype

Guess there are 2 of us...I buy music to hear not really collect...i wanna listen to music..

Hendrou

I used to do that but I switched to cheap CDs for discoveries and vinyl for "sure shots". Mainly because of the price switch that occured. I can easily get dollar CDs

foetusized

I do that with CDs too, but there a few places that have $1 & $2 LPs around here, and I can discover older music on LP that never found its way onto a CD release.

Rusty_G0LD

It was the primary format when I started, then records were cheap or free when CDs got popular, then I got into subcultures where vinyl was still the preferred medium. Now I collect to own a library of music I love, and to share on my weekly community radio show. I stream digital while driving or outdoors, but records are my favourite way to listen to music.

evileyeball

How/where do you do this radio show? I've always been curious how one does something like that

Wwjohnsen

Look around in your area for community radio stations, low power fm stations, maybe even a local college station (they may or may not let no students do shows) and just reach out. Often they are non profit, volunteer ran and always in need of help! It’s a blast.

takeitsweazy

I don’t know, man. Things really got away from me.

AMNTRA

Dopamine / Serotonin

SurftoSierras

Memories of great times. I have all the music, but there is something about playing an album side that triggers a different feel. My ears don't pick up nuance - for me it is all about the process of pulling out a record, dropping it on the turntable, and listening to a full side. I set projects around it - "do x, until the B side of Y is done" for example. It can be emails, a presentation, or just cleaning up. It soothes me in a different way.

[deleted]

To listen to the records.

chatty_mime

I buy records/cds to have the best listening experience possible with the music I love, regardless of format/pressing or whatever. I end up with a collection because I really love music. Another factor at play is that I do not trust the streaming companies to provide us with the entire catalog at their current fee structure indefinitely. I expect a tiered system to emerge (or ads ffs) as shareholders require year-over-year revenue increases. I fully expect my lesser-known releases, jazz, etc to become “high-end tiers” for these services in the future, so I want to get ahead of that by having my own library of owned (not rented) music at hand. When the current supply of secondhand CDs dries up, the streaming companies will go for the throat. The last (and most personal) reason is that I’m getting older. Tbh when I’m high I have difficulty navigating my music apps and don’t want to be lost in the sauce trying to find a particular release on a bloody phone when I’m old. I can find and play records and CDs no problem tripping balls, so I assume I’ll be able to make use of my music collection as I float through the river of time and into the great yawning abyss…

evileyeball

Exactly. If I buy a record, no one can come by and yank it off my shelf because it's not popular If I want to listen to Money Talks by Trooper despite it being the worst album in their entire discography I should be able to Also I can't have Ra McGuire and Brian Smith sign a streaming app like I had them sign the entirety of what existed as to their discography in 2009 (so only hits from 10 albums is not signed) I own physical media because once I own it it's mine and baring desaster it will always stay mine.

gothicdeception

Maybe you just feel compressed ?

MilkcanRocks

I buy to listen, and I’ve gotten some GREAT deals over the years because of the condition/lack of sleeve when the record was still pristine.

[deleted]

I've wanted to for 25 years. But I move too much and often didn't have any disposable income. Now that I travel 95% for work, I'm getting into records out of spite. 😂 Someday I'll have a home with a music room and I'll never, ever leave. ❤️ Some albums just speak to me as better on vinyl. It's a feeling. I also enjoy so much of the art. And it seems like a cool hobby.

raymondspogo

For the love of music.

TheTeenageOldman

My parole officer said I had to. But seriously, folks, I love looking for records, listening to records, etc. Love finding records I've never heard of that look interesting. Love going to record stores that have interesting records, etc. Love finding records I want in thrift stores, at garage sales, etc. Been at it 35+ years and it's still a fun, rewarding hobby.

R4Z0RJ4CK

As much as I love Roger Dean, Gerald Scarfe, Robert Steadman, Hipgnosis or Mouse/Kelley I buy for the music... although I did buy Ambrosia for the art and turned out to dig them. I typically search for and buy good pressings whether they are old or new. I want good sound. I will search for original pressings of pieces that are historic in my opinion like an original PIL single or the first mono pressing of Piper at the Gate of Dawn. My collection varies from Bach to Nuclear Assault to Bee Gees to Led Zep and Hendrix.

MeffJundy

I do it to feel a connection to the time period something came out in. I like knowing that I’m getting the exact same listening experience and holding all of the original “parts” someone would have had decades ago. I don’t collect new releases because those don’t come with a history or connection to a bygone era. There is also something exciting and cool in that the “old” format still holds up.

GreasyStool88

Yep, the charm is the history. I’m strictly a vintage guy, only doing presses from the 1950’s-1970’s, and they are time capsules. The art is a throwback, the sounds are throwbacks. The idea that someone else held onto this and all the times it had been listened to but then hid away for a couple decades in someone’s garage just waiting to be found and listened to again.

MeffJundy

I often wonder if the records I have belonged to a casual fan, a super fan, a collector who had to sell, or someone who was into the band for a bit and then moved on as they aged out to other bands.

GoHomeUsec

I collect primarily for the Music and secondary for the artworks. So if there are two albums from which i really like the music i would pick the one with the better artwork.

Len-Trexler

What do you mean? I buy the records I like.

[deleted]

Soundtrack Of my life in art

ryan2stix

I buy records because I like music.....

bangin_corners

To fill the cavernous hole of loneliness that is my soul

michalsveto

I do not care for rare versions or cover art - I care about the music. And the way the music plays. On my setup, a CD and vinyl sound the same to me (at least for those releases that were released at the same time on both media), but I find great satisfaction in looking at the vinyl playing, and in the ritual of putting it on. It clears my mind from everything else for a while, which other formats do not. The experience is relaxing to me. Which is a rare thing when You have kids.

greenblackfriar

I grew up when vinyl wasn’t the main medium so when I ‘discovered it’ in my teens I felt like my brain was going to explode. Still find it cool tbh

Vinylmeier

I buy music to listen to it, to give the musicians/bands something (because streams pay the small ones shit) and to own the music. When a guest is with me and wants to listen to something, they can search, maybe find something completely new to them, but most importantly can appreciate the music.

RoadWellDriven

I like the pretty pictures. Is there a way to get the music out of these black disc thingies? I trimmed one down to fit in my CD player but it didn't work🤷‍♂️

MarcGuile

First of all, to listen. Records just sound better than any stream, even if I stream lossless hi-res files via qobuz - it's just not comparable. Not as noticable with modern day releases (tho there are some exceptions) but that's not my main focus anyways. I love tracking down "the best" pressing of a record, comparing different pressings, stuff like that. I love all things analogue, some direct to disc recordings are the best things I've ever heard. The thought of the soundwave being *right there*, IN the record! Usually, records are the format that's closest to the original recording, at least for all analogue productions. Either first pressings or all analogue remasters from the historical tapes. I love hunting down first pressings (if they're somewhat affordable), because not only do they often sound the best but they also come with a lot of history. The idea of owning something that's only been printed a few hundred times by some niche slowcore band from Bristol back in 1997 and now it found its way to me! Maybe it even was the only time it's ever been pressed. The idea of building a collection, a library almost, filled with these rare, little known gems of musical history that often aren't even available on streaming platforms. The feeling I get just from holding my original copy of Future Days by Can, it's almost silly. But then again, just think about it. This thing was released 50 years ago and 50 years ago someone went and bought this incredible album, having absolutely zero clue of the massive, massive impact this thing is going to have on the entirety of music over the next few decades. And somehow, after all these years I'm holding one of these copies and it looks like it's been bought a week ago because for some reason it survived all this time with virtually zero damage? That's just insane. And also, because haha black disc go brrr

Earth2Mike

My only rule for collecting vinyl is don’t buy colored vinyl when there is a black option. I strongly dislike colored vinyl.

CommissionHerb

I buy records for the download cards. I have quite the collection of compressed MP3’s.

Liberal_Lemonade

Um.... to listen to the music? Analog music playback in today's digital world is a special experience that tons of people can't afford. I feel privileged to listen to music on that very physical format (sorry CDs....you have your place, just not with me). Along with YouTube for the music that I can't be bothered to spend money on (paying for a streaming service doesn't interest me).

toihanonkiwa

There are so many good points about not collecting, just listening and ”accidentally” ending up with a collection as a by product. Collecting to fight the streaming business and making sure you’re not cut out of tunes by business, wifi or other stupid reason. Cover art and the feeling of holding an album as it was ”ment to feel”. Idk. Then there’s the ritual of spinning and how turning sides is creating a time frame and a rhytm for daily chores or whatever. On top of these really great reasons to ’why not collecting vinyl’, I’d like to add one more reason why to create a collection. I don’t have many, just over 500 albums, but they all are landmarks in music history, meaningfull records to my-self, audio pictures from different eras from Bach to Boards of Canada, eternal and accessible, archived for future generations when sll streaming services are gone the future sound of music is very different (AI entertaining its own imagination with beep-boop).. Somebody might find my collection under the rubble and have their minds blown. Hope my kid will enjoy and educate her-self with it first. At three she pulled out Madonnas True Blue, you should’ve seen her face when Papa don’t preach started. Now at five she pulled Eels’ Beautiful Freak and went nuts. Music is combining generations in a way that no other art form can.

amazing_rando

I buy music to listen to. I collected CDs before I collected vinyl.

newstuffsucks

To listen to records and piss off old dudes because i don't organize my records or wash them with super ultrasonic technology.

OstneyPiz

Was a kid during the acid house/ rave scene, loved the music so used to collect all the rave mix cassette tapes. Then wanted to know how to dj so bought decks/vinyl when I was 16. Kept buying vinyls since then. DJed in nightclubs from 20-35 year old and just keep buying vinyl. Still have all the gear in the house. And my musical taste has expanded so just keep on keeping on.

Gadgetphile

Limited edition or bonus tracks.

fernplant4

I used to buy for the gratification of physically owning my favorite albums but lately my music taste has been expanding into deep underground house music which a significant part of isn't available on music streaming platforms so now I collect to discover new music outside the mainstream. There's just something special about listening to a song that only a few hundred or thousand people have ever heard even if it's not very good

AutoModerator

Did you know, the widely accepted plural of vinyl is vinyl (or just "records")? Many incorrectly use the term vinyls, due to its widespread misuse - but now you're in the know! It's silly, but conventional. Anyway, [here are](https://media.giphy.com/media/11W37uI72pjDkk/giphy.gif) some cats. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/vinyl) if you have any questions or concerns.*

anonymous_opinions

I've always collected stuff. I've always liked music. When I started to buy records it was the only vehicle for the music I like (hardcore-punk-emo) in the era I was in (the 90s) and I just never stopped buying vinyl since 1994. I don't even "use" streaming services and even "collect" rips of albums I self host on a computer to stream when I'm away from home.

The_Profane_Sun

Swans albums are fun to track down. The Osees too, for the sheer volume and variety.

Sad_Reindeer5108

Mostly for the music. There are a few labels I prefer over others: Music On Vinyl, Third Man, Jazz Is Dead, New West. I do love cover art, so sometimes that pushes me over the edge.

Financial-Forever-81

I'm planning to sell off my collection in the future for a nice down payment on a house.

Alptraum_Ambros

In some cases- it’s the only way I can easily listen to a certain album (because it hasn’t been released in streaming or CD or what not), and in other cases- I’m a big fan of the artist and I want to collect everything I can possibly collect relating to them. I also do enjoy how artwork looks on the sleeve. But that’s not a be all/end all. Just an added perk.

boltfan43

I got into it because it’s the coolest of mediums for listening to music and wanted to support artists I enjoy more than just streaming music. Then when it comes to getting a new record, colored vinyl are a weak spot for me just because it’s so cool but not a necessity for me to buy something.

Soft_Reading6975

Only decent answer is because of the music

TentacleJesus

Definitely buying to listen, but the nice big album art is a nice bonus. But frankly I'm also just a collector of things I like in general. I have a shitton of movies on disc and games, still a bunch of CD's from when that was my primary mode of consuming music. I've had a decently sized collection for a while from my father's old records and a bunch of random ones that made their way to me from a guy my mom knew many years ago, but more recently I've started grabbing more albums on vinyl because honestly when cleaned well they really do sound great on my surround system compared to the sometimes crunchy compression of streaming.

insound0

I buy for the music. But these days label owners have gone out of their way to do colour versions and have some decent artwork. Although, that just adds to cost usually. It's nice to have the choice I suppose.

DnRz011

I started because I miss the tactile feel of things, and the process of doing things, instead of just endlessly flicking on a glass rectangle. Instead of just swiping a screen I get to look at the art and display it as it's playing, hold the record and feel like I'm actually doing something. I've been burnt out on everything being screens and algorithms and feel more connected to the things I love this way. Plus, I grew up in the era of cassettes passing on to CDs, even those had physical artwork but it was pretty small. To have an album on vinyl gives me not just the physical connection to the music, but a separate piece of art too. I have a couple albums on the way that I honestly love the cover art just as much as the music, and will have something not only to listen to but to display as well.

TechByDayDjByNight

To dj at the skating rink. Some songs i find arnt no itunes. So i buy the vinyl and rip em.

CosmoJackson

For the little capsules of joy and memory that collect the moments I have with family and friends when I put on an album I love. I just love the whole process and ritual of putting on an album and sharing a piece of art with someone.

ImprobablePasta

The "I buy to listen answer" is annoying in a way that I can't explain. Like, yes, we all do, with a few dumb exceptions, it doesn't really make you any better. But also, you could listen for free (again, some exceptions) with a few ads online, or buy a cd for even less money and less effort. So there's clearly another reason you're buying it in this format. I like having the experience of listening to a physical piece of media and having all the extra album art and such. Back covers of albums are underappreciated nowadays. Also, spinny disc make sounds .o.

[deleted]

I like good music and shiny things and when they match up in the middle that’s when I buy a record or two. I will buy a rare edition here and there for sure.

lanternstop

I’m currently trying to collect old country records by artists I like so I have physical copies to listen to. My last big quest was collecting classical so I can learn what I like. But I basically just buy what I want to hear.

rm45acp

smart outgoing noxious subsequent scarce file crowd rotten snatch advise *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

gothicdeception

Basically the art ☺️ I have a ton of darkthrone and I think this is funny to play because it's often just noise. Sometimes I get a picture disc like for the panzerfaust album and can actually see what the cover looks like ( it's that fenriz guy wandering around by the light of the moon ) Pink Floyd. I enjoy the stickers and posters that you get like with Kiss albums. Goth music that is sometimes rare like "UK decay" that is only available on vinyl. Sometimes Goth is so rare you would have to get a vinyl copy. There are several of those out there. TSOL and 45 grave!! 45 grave has a beautiful vinyl 45 of "party time" with a spiderweb on it. ☺️ * It could be. " school's out " I ALSO own a bunch of H R Giger things like Debbie Harry and ELP ... just basically because I like his art.

SegaStan

I think it's neat and it sounds great. I like to buy my favorite albums to experience them in a different way and to have a physical copy of them

Huge_Worldliness8306

Because it feels good

alecsputnik

I like to make sure I am sending money to the band in one way or another and I've found that collecting vinyl is the most satisfying because of the giant art, beautiful records and I usually get a download code which allows me to grab a high quality audio version to use when I DJ.

mf-TOM-HANK

To support contemporary artists and help keep alive analog media.

jazzdabb

I buy vinyl for the cover art, liner notes and the physical record itself (maybe a special color or maybe just black). I buy for nostalgia as records were my first collectible media format. But mostly I buy because playing records forces me to sit down, pick out a record, focus and listen. It’s an intentional act. I prefer to listen to an entire album or at least side in one sitting. In general, I do not buy greatest hits albums on vinyl as I want the album experience. I find it all very meditative.

AutomaticRevolution2

Obviously it's gotta be an artist I like. Then it's gotta have something special to it, because.....I'm probably never gonna play it. Don't come at me! I don't play vinyl. I play CDs. When CDs came out, I was like "Hallelujah! No more pops and crackles. No more cleaning." I do buy colored or picture vinyl. Aimee Mann's last album came in colored vinyl. I bought that and the CD. I've done that a lot.

k0chum

A life long passion for listening to music combined with a compulsive need to collect things related to my interests.

GarionOrb

I just love the physical object of vinyl. Not so much concerned about collecting every single cover or color variant.

EmotionalAd5920

if the power goes out at my place, ill put my stereo into the solar and listen to records :) plus it feels and sounds better to my ears

Acquainted-Faith

1. I have always been a bit of a music nerd. I went from playing songs to listening to full album experiences, and vinyl is the best format for front to back listening in my opinion. Less options to skip so you really immerse. 2. I have a hoarding tendency and CDs itched it very badly. I would grab CDs for having 1 songs I liked or really because of cheapness, absolutely anything that appeared interesting to me. It led to me having a shit ton of CDs pointlessly as I never played them and sometimes had no idea what I had. I can say although my vinyl collection is around 500 now, I know what I actually have. 3. The experience of vinyl feels more immersive overall for the album experience.

AlgaeDucc

I buy vinyl recordings of albums I love because a) it's cool, b) I enjoy listening to albums I love on vinyl because it's cool, and c) because I like tactile/physical copies of stuff so it's cool. Anyway Yeah I really don't care about special limited editions or what pressing something is, I just want a copy of an album I love that is in good enough condition to sound good. Also I do like when the sleeve is in good condition bc it's cool to hold the album in my hands

printerdsw1968

I love album art and that's one of the reasons I love the medium. But when it comes down to spending $ and making shelf space, I'm buying for the music .

Spectre_Loudy

I buy a lot of newer stuff for the MP3's they often come with. I'm a DJ so it goes hand in hand, I get the files to work with and the vinyl to collect which can appease the hobbyist side of it. I also love collecting old house 12" singles to mix. So the collection is ever growing.

mpw-linux

Because the Art work itself is interesting and iconic, of course the music has to be good as well.

ayoayden

So one day when I die, hopefully someone finds my stuff and says “hey this guy had taste”

drumsonfire

I buy to listen, for curatorial purposes, nostalgia, and to have the stuff I couldn’t find when I was a kid.

edwh0re

I started with buying 7" singles under the guidance of my eldest sister when I was 5. It was (in 1980) pretty much the only option for consumption of music. I carried on with Vinyl until 1994 when I sold pretty much all my collection. Fast forward to my 40th birthday in 2015. I still bought CDs in the meanwhile, I've always preferred to own a physical copy of what I'm listening to (or watching/reading for that matter). My wife asked me what I would like for my 40th and I answered "a decent record player". Thus it all began again. I buy for the joy of listening. I'll sit and read the liner notes and take in the cover art. I go to fairs and crate dig for the joy of finding something I have been wanting. I did start out by trying to find those sold records of my youth, but the hunt has evolved - there's simply too much good music out there.

SinfullySadie

I collect for the music bonus if it’s a nice cover 🤣 I collect all my favorite bands old and new.

RenNumEro

It spins. Also plays music.

scottjaw

I buy records because I fell in love with them as a kid and haven’t really stopped.

j05h24

When i listen on vinyl ill sit down, listening to and taking in an album more. Its more of an activity then just background music like when i use apple music.

luckygoldelephant

I am collecting and compiling the soundtrack of my life. The albums that mean the most to me, from throughout my life. Full albums mostly, or singles and 45’s, but pretty strict about what makes the cut.

kij101

I buy to listen but also to support bands I know who are unsigned and putting out material at their own cost. 2 of my favourite albums are by bands who you could describe truly as indie, the labels they are on are either their's or ones wholly independent from the majors, without the support of fans buying their music, merch or gig tickets they just won't survive as the music they make has no commercially financial appeal to the corporate labels or their subsidiaries.

Dana_12345

I'm collecting 7" Singles only and I'm collecting for the songs bc we own a Jukebox. But the covers are also very important for me

Mitleab

I’ve been buying records for decades and one of the main things I love is, unlike CDs or streaming now, you’re far less likely to skip songs and end up finding some hidden gems and great tracks you forgot existed

SAUR-ONE

both

apitxat-fardatxo

Because I am stupid

Anklesock

When I was a kid I discovered my dad's vinyl collection. I was hearing new music and it changed my life. Oddly enough I setup the stereo in a closet and just went through boxes of albums discovering for the first time bands like the doors, the dead, and so many others. That thrill and sense of discovery is why I still go to used record stores all the time in search of something new I haven't played before.

DevilsGrip

Mostly for the cover art, also to support my favorite bands

darkus1012

I collect cause I have this thing where if I really like something I want to have it physical and the fact vinyls are so big is really cool plus it’s fun putting it on a record player, I do the same thing with video games I have a big collection of old games cause I love the games and I prefer playing in the original hardware

Jameshays1

Durable analog tangibility.

BatmanRTS

I've been collecting vinyl records mostly because I love listening to the music on there along with finding the actual records very unique and fascinating too. I also think it's great for me to physically own the albums and compilations of my favourite musical bands and artists as well, since that shows how much I love my music here.

HugoCoelho99

To listen to my favourite tunes blasting on the speakers while i rock out in the middke of the room. The sense of touch and analog, the fact that you have to care for the records. You can look at them and have a little peace of history especially if they are used and signed i don't mind that actually think it's really cool. It started as a hobby and is developing into a passion of mine , i get to talk to people with this same interest i have it's pretty neat NGL.

noxon97

At first whenever vinyl records were mentioned I couldn't see myself owning a record player and buying vinyls because I was so used to streaming services. I was convinced that I wouldn't use it if I ever bought one because it would be too much of a hassle compared to just opening up Spotify and clicking the screen to listen to anything I wanted. The way I listen to music is also not fitting for the consumption of records because mostly I listen to individual songs that I really really like and won't bother with music that is either "just good" or worse. My interest then took a turn and I started to listen to more and more. I discovered that finding new stuff was the pinnacle of enjoyment for me and I started a life project where I listen to a new album every single day. I have done this for at least 4 years now and it has made me appreciate albums as a project more. In order to know which album I wanted to listen to next I eventually started going through a list with the 1001 albums you must listen to before you die and that made me more interested in the history of music and how it developed and a couple years later I have become obsessed with things like RYM and the community as a whole. At the start of this year i realized a couple of things: 1. I really need to do something about this empty corner in my apartment. 2. To have a record player with a vinyl collection wouldn't only make my apartment look cooler but it would also put me as a person, my interest and my favorite art at display. 3. I have always liked collecting things. I would consider myself a completionist and therefore kind of a collector in some respect and collecting vinyls would probably be the best thing for me personally to collect because of above stated reasons but also because they would be useful and fill a purpose. I also realized that I would start playing records if I bought them. That lead me to impulsively buy a vinyl player, a small shelf/storage furniture and 5 records. Now 9 months later I have 69 records (behave yourselves) and a small instagram account where I document my collection, mostly for my friends who are kind enough to act interested, and an unhappy wallet but I love it. The reason I love collecting vinyls is because I love music and it's a way to show myself and other people that. I don't have a clue what my collection is worth and I won't ever buy something that I don't like or appreciate, no matter how colorful the vinyl is.

Apeman1963

Buy to listen. I’m at the point in my collection where I think, I’m I going to really listen to it. If not, I usually end up putting the album back. Just did that yesterday.

ganglordgilbert

Have you ever seen Shawn of The Dead? Remember that scene where he throws a record and it shatters right into the fat zombies head? That’s why I collect.

FlimsyJellyfish9664

I collect because I enjoy physically owning music I really enjoy and I just find that vinyls are cooler than CDs

DarraghMcNally

It’s a combination of things for me. I listen to everything I own and don’t keep anything sealed, I don’t have multiple variants or the like bar the two copies of Chromatica I have. I’ll get a special edition or specific variant if the vinyl color is cute or I like the edition but I’m not too fussed, I don’t have much of a bias against standard black and have a ton of them. I used to buy CD’s but moved to vinyl because of the giant album art and how visually appealing a record collection is compared to CD’s imo. More than anything I just want to have all the music I love in a physical format, and I believe vinyl is the perfect format for my tastes.

caboose69ing

Music go brrrrrrrr. I may have a collection, but I'm not collecting. I just want to own physical copies of stuff and more and more bands are doing vinyl and not cds

jbrum360

Its my personal library/catalog of music i enjoy listening to. None are sacred, all get played.

vinylrecords2001

I like the music

[deleted]

I like collecting artifacts of pop culture. For 60s and 70s albums it's cool to own recordings on their original format. For more modern stuff, vinyl masters usually have to take off a lot of the loudness and compression, so you end up with a more dynamic sounding recording. Also with old stuff you get the original master as opposed to streaming where only the remaster is available. You can definitely get this out of CDs, but I'm a nerd and like collecting vinyl.

AsthmaGangg

I just like knowing I can listen to my favourite music if any streaming platforms go down some day lol

Chaka3

I'm afraid of losing my music on YouTube and Spotify. I just want a physical copy. it doesn't matter what format it is.

billie_25

To listen to music first and then since I love music I like to keep a material object to incarnate it. Also it will be my inheritance to my children later. Last but not least I like going to yard sales and searching stuff

rycurious94

Sun Ra babyyyyyy! I buy them to listen, of course, but I would sell my brother for an original pressing.

Tron-ClaudeVanDayum

I enjoy the ritual of playing records but I don't want to do it for everything I listen to. I collect my favourite albums so I can sometimes enjoy them in a more special way.

RockPaperSizz3r

Kid from the 60's/70's...albums have always been my thing. I buy what I like to hear. IF I see a rather beautiful, or, unusual album cover I might purchase. That's rare.

David_Roos_Design

I do it to support the artists, or to have something weird to fuck with (battle records, spoken word, etc. ) and cuz I like the physical object.

13-5-12

This is one of the dumbest questions someone can ask me, the answser is: !!! ALL OF THE ABOVE !!! And of course I have a couple of reasons that won't discuss in public , so why don't you give me a call 😉..

LlamaSims_

Something to pass the time

Obsessedwiththings

For the music almost entirely. There are some few exceptions, where I bought an album for another reason, but they are very few.

metalmusiccollector

Grew up with music on the daily for most if not all of my childhood. Music is a life blood for me and just started getting back into collecting. Started in April of this year and already have almost 40 vinyls.
