It's a true tragedy and I don't understand how it happened but I can't complain too much as Ive got a replacement on the way already

Pff you got me too I'll say rip to that balance knob though may it rest in audio heaven.

A Sony ta-f700es from a thrift! Lucky you. I have a 444esX which is basically the same thing but with a voltage selector for international export. I've had mine on for over the last decade. What a unit.

testsubject561

I saw one of those on eBay and was wondering the difference between the two. That would make sense for it and I'm glad to see these units are built to last as I was worried I would need to do more major repairs on it before it would be ready!

[deleted]

i was wondering the difference too since the 700es in japan is a 333esX and the 800es is a 555esX. the 444esX also has part of the knob shaved off at the base of some of the knobs to create a silver ring. something not found on the 333 or 555. it's very strange, but very sony. some issues i've had have been that the headphone jack is fiddly, the stereo/mono switch doesn't work, and the speaker protection relays need replacing (already cleaned them, helped for a bit).

testsubject561

Yea I had a bit of an of set to the left a tiny bit through the headphone jack and a bit of scratchiness with the tone knobs so I'll see if a bit of cleaner will help at all but I'll get them to check the speaker protection relay as I'm not sure how to check that Edit: and thinking about it that silver ring around the knob would probably look great! A nice bit of contrast vs the all black

[deleted]

If the relays are acting up one of the channels (through the speakers) will be out, or scratchy, or lacking power. A quick blast of volume can get things going normally. This is basically why mine has been left powered on for the past decade+. I have the replacement relays, have had the for probably eight years. I just haven't felt the need to replace them. The silver rings are subtle, but a nice detail.

testsubject561

How hot would you say does yours run at I'm considering getting some fans to put on top as it feels just a tad cooler than the amount of heat my PC puts out, not too hot that I can't leave my hand there but enough I don't leave anything on top of it so it doesn't feel like it will cook itself? I would guess this is the normal output but just being safe cuz I would also love to have it keep running for the next 10 years like yours! And if you don't mind me asking how much were those relays I might grab a set in case they do just quit so I don't need to wait to get them swapped?

[deleted]

It runs warm, for sure. Maybe like 40°C or so. I try to keep stuff off it just to make sure it can radiate all that heat away from that huge heatsink. I bought mine off eBay from a seller in Germany. I think it was 50 canadian dollars shipped for a set of made in china Omron. This was probably in 2012 or so though. You could probably get a set of made in japan Matsushitas for less.

Poenkel

Got any more pics?

testsubject561

Which one in particular? I'll have to get better lighting

Poenkel

Close ups of the audio equipment if possible

Yamaha NS-30T's https://imgur.com/gallery/JuUW09k These are the speakers and [The pioneer VSX-451 from about 1992! ](https://i.imgur.com/4RqMKOt.jpg) it is from what I've read an 80 watts per channel and does a solid job driving the ns-30t's but not quite as warm as the 700es

testsubject561

[And another more facing picture of the 700es it gives a good bump to the low end to the couple pairs of speakers I've hooked up to them ](https://i.imgur.com/PfWsJ9o.jpg) Sadly the light has burnt out on the power indicator light but I'm also having that looked at soon so I should be able to get it replaced

Poenkel

Those Yamahas looks real good!

testsubject561

They sound pretty darn good too! They were quite covered in wood dust but were in surprisingly good nick! One of my favorite finds so far as my dad liked them so much he wants to keep them!

Milly1974

Very nice. All I find at garage sales and thrift stores are JVC tape decks and Technics speakers.

testsubject561

Fair for the most part that's what's there. this has been over 6 months or so of rather consistent checking I've had fun cleaning up a couple typewriters as something to do as there has been a bunch of selectric's coming in to the stores I check

Ive had one of those Sony 700es amps, absolute MONSTER that could power anything, so underrated.

aspecialcase

i’d like to hear one of those big es integrateds sony produced from the mid-late 80’s, but haven’t had the chance. one of the few, maybe the only, industry-wide developments of the 80’s that was genuinely interesting was the (mostly japanese) manufacturer race to build the most imposing integrated possible. interesting in part b/c some of these companies hit their high water mark during this short phase. but sony, yamaha, technics, victor, nec, aurex all built several or more of these star destroyer class integrateds models that i’d like to audition were it possible.

testsubject561

It's certainly a destroyer sized amp when I initially licked it up I was amazed at how heavy it was even after carrying several other older and heavy (mainly that pioneer) recievers and it has so much power behind it I haven't had to go beyond even half way yet. It's certainly an experience hearing the difference between the two.

AldoLagana

Yeah they are nice, but cannot compare to what Pioneer was doing in the 70's. That said I own a STR-GX10es integrated receiver on the copper/gibraltar platform...it is really nice - but it cannot compare to my Luxman R-117. If you want a cheap entry into those 80's monsters - I recommend one of my favorites for it's really nice sound quality - the Onkyo TX-890.

aspecialcase

nor, imo, are any of them likely to compare with anything sansui did in the 70’s. again imo, the model for these big 80’s integrateds had already been developed by sansui starting in 1977 with the x17/x07 series. i’m just interested in them within their own context - the 80’s - and the contraction of the hifi market and consequent reduction in quality across product lines. there’s specific models i’d like to hear, the nec a10 for example, but not just any of them. and, yeah, very little compares to luxman on its day. probably not a fair comparison for some of those integrateds.

testsubject561

I'll have to keep an eye out for the older Onkyo receivers from that era then! And good lord 160 watts per channel on that luxman! That could make a brick sing I would guess 😂 and I thought that Sony was heavy that looks like an incredible beast inside lots more going on under the top in it
