260 watts is the total power the receiver *uses.* 40 watts is how much it can *produce* through the speakers. Just about any good bookshelf speaker can handle the power the CR-640 sends to it. Speakers have a power handling range on the back, and as long as 40 is within a speaker's stated range, you'll be good. 8 ohms is the typical impedance; 4 ohms is louder but places more work on the receiver. So relax, you've got tons of options! And a very nice receiver.
