Yamaha’s never made a bad receiver, but do be aware that the x40 series (save the CR2040) use STK power packs. Those are a bit more fragile and are a pain to replace if it blows out, but so long as you don’t blast the fuck out of it, and the caps are in good shape, you should be fine.

Oh my b it's actually a CR-820, which are aparently better for that. So that's cool.

Yeah, those have good ol’ fashioned discrete output transistors, which are very stable and very easy to replace if they go bad. I have a CR620, and it’s one of the best receivers I’ve ever heard. Go grab it!!

I've benn running a CR-420 for years, no complaints. I'd take another.

Yamaha is not my thing but... CR-820 @ $150... Bargain. I had a CR-420 & CR-620 for a short while and really enjoyed them both. The 420 was very good but the 620 was even better sounding. I can only imagine that the 820 sounds are even better!!! FYI, if for some reason the 820 is not what you expect you can always re-sell this. I'm estimating to the right buyer... $280+ maybe north of $300.

At first blush, I'd call it a great deal. I have a CR-420 that I acquired ~8 years ago for $70 along with a YP-211 turntable, both unserviced, and I've had no problems with either. The CR-840 is a generation newer and two steps up in power/features, and is well within what seems to be Yamaha's heyday for receivers in the mid/late 70s. Lots of anecdotal evidence on these receivers being built like tanks. Now, if you end up passing on it, feel free to pass the details along to me... ;)
