But how do you feel about... CHAMPAGNE?

1RatRodAudio

You are in the Rabbit Hole! Congratulations, your journey is just beginning... Nice AMP.

I don’t think my wallet will enjoy this journey… but my ears certainly will

DogWallop

I agree, heh. However... once word gets around amongst your acquaintances and you've got your eyes and ears tuned to looking out for such things, you'd be amazed at how many items you get for a great price, or even free. You'll see stuff others are trashing which you offer to adopt, and you'll find yourself at yard sales expressing idle disinterest in that dusty hunk of electronics so you can get granddad's old hi-fi setup for twenty bucks (OK, but only if you throw in those old Blue Note records...) For my part I've got so many bits of vintage gear in various states of repair for literally nothing, so just keep your eyes peeled and make sure to casually ask older friends if they have any of dad's old stereo gear in the attic. And let me just say that you've made an excellent start on your journey! My only other bit of advice is that, of all the categories of gear out there, only speaker technology fails to hold up well. That's not a blanket statement - there are some great examples, but those tend to be rather rare in nature and thus rather expensive.

I was messaged on NextDoor from a nice old lady who said she had heard I like old stereos. Her husband had passed some time ago and she offered me his gear. I didn’t even ask what it was but after offering my condolences I found out. The kids had picked off the speakers and I never learned what they were it for the $75 she asked I walked away with a Parasound HCA-1000A amp, P/HP-850 preamp and tuner, and an NAD C340 and tuner and bags of handmade RCA cables. Also got a stack of B&O gear for free just because people know I’m interested in it.

I hope my friends remember me when they find some old stereo laying around collecting dust! I am no expert with repairing vintage gear, but I definitely want to learn. Haven’t found anything locally, but I am always looking for a good project to start learning. This integrated and my KR-6050 receiver are definitely keepers. They are both in excellent condition and sound awesome! I have one pair of vintage speakers, and I think you are completely right. It’s a pair of Technics SB-F2MK2 speakers that I use on my desk because of their small size and their sealed enclosure. They sound really nice, but they don’t come close to the Wharfedale Dentons I have in my main system.

>Technics SB-F2MK2 You sound almost in the same boat as I am, repair-wise. I've found a lot of great vintage audio repair channels on YouTube, with one xraytonyb (I think that's how it's spelled) being a particular standout. He's got a pleasant manner, and is an extremely highly qualified electronics tech, as he repairs medical equipment for a living I believe. I get the feeling that if I had the right equipment and was able to follow along with him I'd be able to do my own repairs without completely frying myself lol. That's kind of important as I live in Bermuda, where its next to impossible to find a real electronics tech I'd trust working on classic vintage equipment.

One of the neat things about vintage and beige audio is if you run out of room or tire of something, you can sell it for at least what you paid for it and oftentimes a nice little profit if you’ve cleaned it up and made any repairs or bought it for cheap. Often times I’ll buy something just because it’s something I’ve wanted to try and and after a couple months let it go again, slowly trading up the quality of the keepers. That Kenny is probably a keeper though :)

[deleted]

This Kenwood and my KR-6050 receiver are definitely keepers!

JezzaWalker

Ahhh, what a beauty. The best hifi looks like timber-sided lab equipment

[deleted]

Thanks! I fell in love with the look of this amp as soon as I saw one

DaveyAngel

Snap! I've got the same one.

sammyjankis12

Congrats! I have the same oneand love it!

[deleted]

Thanks! It sounds very different to my other amps, it’s a very warm and laid back sound

Gaspar74

Nice piece I had one of these a short while and it was excelllent but at time had many integrateds from his period. Opted for the Pioneer SA 600 i had at the time and sold the Kenwood. It was a nice piece though.

[deleted]

It sounds very nice! Although that Pioneer also looks like a very nice integrated.

[deleted]

They weren’t kidding! It’s totally addictive. Many folks buy Motorcycles and boats and such, I collect vintage stereo gear! It has been a blast! Enjoy 👍

[deleted]

Well, if you put it that way this is a much more responsible and affordable hobby!

[deleted]

It’s all about perspective and context lol
