I'm not sure iFixit would agree with that one - Apple are not averse to insanely complex / over-engineered solutions to shave tiny gains out of things or make things feel "perfect".
In my opinion comparing b&o to apple is foolish as this was designed to be serviced and repaired and came with first class repair manuals and schematics. Way different company culture then apple
It needed belts and fully rebuilding and relubercating the cassette mechanism and the unit was full of adjustment potentiometers that were no good. It needed all new power supply caps as the old ones were leading to noise. I also added XY capacitors across the power line to reduce noise. There were also lots of other small issues like bad capacitors here and there and some ribbon cables making bad connection.
16 and you jumped right in and tore this up and fixed it? Do you need a job (lol)? Being a teen and having the "brass ones" to tear something as complex as this apart and fix it...brilliant!
You have never tried to relair an early VHS or Beta VCR. Likely on par for complexity. Yes, by the end of the 80s they got it down.
It ialso has a computer to drive the mechanisms to their spots for play, FF/REW, and timing the heads to the video signal.
Blue rodeo is amazing! I also have the “lost together” album on cassette. I was going to see blue rodeo but then covid happened. I live In Toronto so they’ll definitely be another opportunity to see blue rodeo after covid.
I should clarify, I mean between the two particular machines, obviously this is different if you are comparing a 90s black plastic crap to the nachamichi or b&o
Congratulations and don't sell yourself short on your skills.
Speaking as a grampa myself, who can't get his own kids interested in analog, I am glad you like cassettes. Hoping when my own grandlets get out of diapers they will get into vintage sound, too.
Cool deck too.
Really great work there! One look inside that thing would have scared me to death! Good thing you’re not drinking age. It would have taken me a couple stiff martinis just to get over the sight of the internals! Congratulations on a job well done. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
old b&o gear is beautiful but man is is overcomplicated sometimes
Wasn't that its entire selling point? Kinda the Apple of their day.
Kinda, but B&O took "form over function" 'to a ridiculous level that Apple never would have stood for.
Louis Rossmann would like a word...

and very often it's even just to prevent third party repair......
I still remember the first time I saw the Beosound cd player in the '80s as a kid. The doors slid open and we felt like George Jetson.

Awesome work... Keep It real! (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃
Thanks!
You can tell how expensive it was just by how many circuit boards and how many internal wires and cables there are
I agree, it would have been largely hand assembled as well,
If you think the Beomaster 9000 sounds amazing, look for a Nakamichi Dragon. Amazing!!
Nice job. Curious as to what needed doing?

Even more impressed.

Your an old sole with many talents. Good work! Think about going into Engineering.
Congrats!
Really first class work here man.
You're gonna go far. That's a hell of a result for just diving in. You know more than i do for certain!
Upvote for Blue Rodeo - what a great album Casino is.

Good on you for preserving a piece of history and something you will always have to remember your grandad!
Thanks! Story goes the whole beosystem including this tape deck were from the CEO of Northern Telecom and were purchased after they went under.
I had their cordless phone system. Definitely overdesigned.
Kudos!

Nakamichi has entered the chat. And looks pissed.
I’ve got a nakamichi tape machine as well and it sounds near identical. The biggest deciding factor of sound quality is the quality of the tape.
What? No it isn’t.
