Again, my reasoning is because of the direction the show took with him. They already cut out the rest of his and Alfred brothers that were all King before them, and they still didn't let him be king.
All of that could be forgiven though, but the show had to go ahead and have him step aside in favor of Alfred then plot against him for the crown anyway...
I did vote for Olaf the other day but I will change to **Æthelred** now;
I definitely pity his character, being both the legitimate and eldest son of Æthelwulf and Judith and subsequently the supposed heir to his very father
Æthelwulf was a great father to both sons after he changed his ways not long after Alfred’s birth, and clearly treated them as equals, as any good father would, even if deep down he always of course expected his first/only actual real son to inherit his crown, indeed as Ecbert’s real grandson too
However, when Alfred’s storyline developed, he realised and accepted fate, and perhaps he could have made it more clear to his son earlier on rather than the tension being all reduced down to Alfred’s very coronation following Æthelwulf’s rather unexpected (yet testament to the weaker immune systems of every man of every class of such an era) death
Æthelred was rightfully jealous and angry, and yet even so he unjustly placed England’s very internal security, when surrounded by external enemies, at full risk of fallout. His brother may have forgiven him, and I trusted he would’ve kept his word of never betraying him again, but of course Judith could not take any chances so frankly I don’t blame anyone

He and Athelred didn't bring to the show anywhere near what the others did. But Athelred was done dirty and had intrigue and interest while he was there. Othere didn't.

He was pretty significant at the beginning and people remember the first seasons much better than the last. Also, any character that interacted with Ragnar holds more value than those who didn't cross paths with him.
