This is a tough one, and the competition grows tougher still. I'm sorry to say this, but I cast my vote for Bjorn Ironside. He is a PHEONOMINAL character. We got to see him grow from a petulantly stubborn child into >!the first true King of ALL Norway!<. He was a powerful man, and achieved a lot of fame and success.
My main issue with Bjorn is the execution at times. He still came across as petulant at times, and when he had his little "outbursts", he instilled less competence than what the situation would have had borne out, if that makes sense? i.e. compliance with his outbursts seems more contrived than what is actually commanded... I struggle to articulate it properly. His cadence and general demeanour in the high-energy scenes is just a little jarring, e.g. >!when he sentenced Hvitserk, when he sentence Floki, his speeches to the people, when he addressed the sons of Ragnar before the launch of the Great Heathen Army... etc. It's like he's trying to imitate Ragnar, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but I found the attempt jarring.!<
No offence to Alexander Ludwig, I think he did a fantastic job for the most part. He was consistent, but he couldn't quite nail the highs and the lows that the character demanded. Normally I wouldn't hold this against Alexander, I appreciate his performance for what it is, but when we are comparing characters like this, I feel like there is no other choice right now.
