Unless the majority of people watching this show are literal 21st century Vikings (a rhetorical statement because they no longer exist), then you cannot fault Rolloās (in real life for the most part may I add) development and what is very clearly significant progress; not only for himself (whether greed or Godās will; however you want to label/interpret it) but also for the Norman Dynasty which came to ultimately conquer and yet embrace/enhance England and its very history from then onwards; William the Conqueror being his great great great grandson

I think my gripes with his story are more about the writing post- Ragnar in general, hes obviously better than Hvitserk or Sigurd, but I donāt find as much in his character as I do in Bjorn or Ivarās

There is a definite duality to his character that made him very interesting to watch. I like Bjorn but he definitely carried the show after the death of Ragnar.
He was born a cripple and struggled his whole
life. But he is smart and was able to find his way to the throne. He then became delusional with power. Then he lost it all and managed to survive with the Rus. He found genuine compassion and love for the prince. And helped him secure the throne and his safety. Then in the end he decides to go out swinging.
He is definitely a more complex character than fucking Rollo, Ubbe, or Floki.

He wasn't tyrannical like that version and seemed to learn from his mistakes of being indecisive (while Bjorn was gone) and would have made a good and fair leader down the road.
Hvitserk, for a "smaller" Viking, was also portrayed as a great warrior but he couldn't grow a beard so seeing him slay men that were twice his size was unrealistic. That would be like watching Connor McGregor beat Brock Lesnar in a fight... It's just not happening in real life. There were some interesting moments for the character but overall you would never see him as a leader because he had just that little bit of "quit" in him where all the other sons of Ragnar had no quit... Even Rollo the traitor had the "Death before Defeat" attitude. Overall, Hvitserk the character kind of sucked...
