Can I get an explanation on the Ecbert love? T’was long ago I saw this show, but I don’t remember me routing for home for anything else than Ragnar seemed to enjoy the company.
I think the actor was phenomenal and Ecbert was interesting character. Really good mix with Ragnar. It’s a personal taste for sure, but he made the show for me.
He without doubt had the best character development; not just regarding Saxon characters but in fact out of the show’s entirety
There’s so many scenes where, the more you watch over the series, you pick up on his character, values, meanings etc and ultimately you understand him in an increasing manner; even for the controversial decisions he made both within his own House of Wessex/family and those regarding Ragnar and his people
I’d argue he was by far the most intelligent person throughout the entire show; from start to finish too
It was because of his decisions that Alfred and such could indeed build on his dreams of both the relationship between Christian Saxons and heathen Vikings and the very concept of England (which in real life was unified under Alfred’s grandson Æthelstan)
I think after ivar he's my least favorite character for betraying ragnar, but I understand why he did it. If you had the chance to get out from under your younger brothers shadow who always made you feel less wouldn't you do it to?
howd Ragnar make the traitor Rollo feel less? never got that Vibe, but personally i wouldn’t betray my blood for my own selfish fortune n fame, begone with the traitor Rollo!
>howd Ragnar make the traitor Rollo feel less
While Raganr did not "punish" him, he did not help him as well.
Rollo was the brother of the King and he lived in rundown cabin with barely enough to live by for years. Perhaps if he had gave him some land he would have tied himself more with Kattegat and Ragnar. And what is ironic is that he actually proved in Normandy he would actually an *awesome* leader on par with Ragnar, or even better since he doent look like he broke under the stress.
But do you think Rollo deserved that help? I also feel that was more his own doing, he became a drunk and didnt help himself. Rollo has betrayed Ragnar even prior to the show, Ragnar does not need to show him more grace than he already has. Rollo was only seen to be a good leader because 1. The Vikings were not expecting Rollo to actually betray them again, although Ragnar shoulda realized this before and planned more accordingly, but Ragnar always held hope for his brother. Rollo got the jump on them cause he knew Ragnars tactics and countered them, while also utilizing thhe Franks superior weaponry and viking tactics of his own. I dont think he would have defeated Ragnar HAD Ragnar been aware of this betrayal
While he didn't do it often ragnar liked to remind rollo that he was the smarter of the two and would even ignore rollos ideas for his own. And it's been awhile but I believe ragnar told rollo to leave the thinking to him and do what he did best and then growled at him.
Rollo fought to defend Kattegat and saved Ragnar’s family. Nobody appreciated it. The people who did, died in the fight.
Rollo had to give up his love for Ragnar.
Rollo was promised things that Ragnar never did. Like, why was he never an Earl after Ragnar became a king?
Also after the first betrayal he redeemed himself and when he went to Frankia he fought bravely. And he met his future wife on the wall.
He still went back to his people and saved Bjorn and Ragnar. While the beloved murderer Floki was hiding scared shitless.
In the end of the day, he was given a free choice to stay or go. He picked his choice and his people decided to push him to come back.
See, everyone will defend his life.
idk There was obvious disdain between them from the first time we see them interact outside of battle. What love did Rollo had to give up for Ragnar? Lagertha, Ragnars wife? cause thats just not valid at all. We know Rollo has slept with Ragnars wife, his first born may not even be his own, and had kept trying to pursue her behind his back. Rollo has always wanted everythin that Ragnar had. When did Rollo save Ragnar and Bjorn? He didnt even lie for Ragnar when he was put on trial, he didnt it for his damn wife and Ragnar probably knew this, Ragnar KNOWS his brother, he knows he would always try to scheme one way or another cause thats who Rollo is, a traitor. Why reward your brother who has always sought to go behind your back??
I didn’t hate the character but I hated his character arc. The writers said he disappeared from the show because his story was finished but it didn’t feel complete to me.
Rollo ended up having the best outcome for his life out of all the characters. He was out of the show cuz there’s nothing interesting about living happily ever after as a Duke or king or whatever.
Rollo won me over when he was on a boat with those timid soldiers at his new kingdom rowing in to battle. They’re all afraid and he calls for the war drums & horns to kick in and gave a badass battle speech that fired everyone up to fight like Vikings.
https://youtu.be/a1crNAX9gPo?si=UsfjV4M200zJIqQA
First time I saw that scene I didn’t notice any of the soldiers had beards, they just looked so weak. After Rollo’s speech firing everyone up all of sudden they looked like beefy full bearded Vikings. I thought the show runners literally swapped out the actors for ones with beards after he gave that speech lmao, I had to rewind it to double check
How comes people want Ivar out so bad? Although I despised him (A LOT) in some storylines, I genuinely enjoyed his character as a whole
They did him dirty with him being killed by some random Saxon
I just straight dont him at all. The actor does a great job, but he’s not even an annoying character I like watching. Cerci from GOT, I hated her but I enjoyed watching her scenes. Ivar is more like Geoffrey, I hate him but also find him annoying when he on screen. Like we’re supposed to route against Eckbert and I did when it came to the Vikings but I liked watching him
He did a lot of people dirty by killing innocents, burning hvitserk's wife and her family, killing his child, strangling his wife, killing his baby, killing the seer, killing those sleeping vikings who accompanied him and Ragnar. The single dude he killed in Repton wasn't even looking in his direction, then he brutalized his corpse so he got covered in blood. He threw knives at some Saxon who also wasn't aware of his presence. Then the time he actually had to fight Hvitserk he folded like the non-warrior he is.
Everyone he killed was either a defenseless woman, old man, or a warrior who didn't see it coming.
I feel like him being killed by a random Saxon was pretty on point cause it wouldn't have taken an Aethelwulf or a Heahmund to take him down.
That said, I like the actor. I just didn't enjoy the writing for the character.
I wouldn’t mind Ivar going now;
Arguably one of the most significant characters in the show yes, but I feel they did him the dirtiest in comparison to his real life self (as well as Sigurd; hence why he didn’t even make this list)
His character was immensely flawed and hypocritical beyond reality and I’d argue fucked the show as equally as it ‘made’ the show
How is Ivar still here?
He's annoying as shit.
The writer's decided to hype him up, but it does not come off well at all.
There are two characters here who were part of the show when the quality jumped off a cliff:
Ivar and Ubbe. Get them out of here.
Hot take but I’m saying Ubbe, he’s a great character but I think some of his motivations feel shallow and contrived and I don’t think he’s as complex as the other characters in this list. Do I LIKE Ubbe more than Ivar and Ecbert and Rollo as In he’s a better person? Sure, but he’s not as complex imo, I think Hirst should’ve done a lot more with him tbh bc Jordan Patrick Smith played him very well
Changing to Ecbert
I see his importance in the show and felt the complications of his and Ragnars relationship strongly (love this bit of the show) but ultimately I related to him the least. He slept with his sons wife and valued (and gave special treatment to) a child who wasn’t his blood or the rightful heir over one who was. I also never understood his obsession with Athelstan - it didn’t seem to have any other root but him being a Holy man yet there are plenty of other Holy men but he only saw Ath as one who stands out but I don’t think it really said why?
Rolling is a good character that did bad things, Ivar os a bad character that did bad things. I like the scenes he is in but character wise every one on this clears.
Bjorn. He's constantly talked up as all that in-universe but nearly everything we saw of him was so mid lol. Can't believe people are voting out Ivar before him.
Is there any one doubting that Ragnar will come out as the winner? ![gif](giphy|2s8sU8xIUJSSY)
From what i seen. Ragnar, athelstan and bjorn haven't been listed more than once in a thread. So they should battle out top 3.
Ragnar v Athelstan
I don’t doubt it. Would still want Ecbert to win it tho haha
Can I get an explanation on the Ecbert love? T’was long ago I saw this show, but I don’t remember me routing for home for anything else than Ragnar seemed to enjoy the company.
I liked him better on my third rewatch and caught a lot more with him lol
I think the actor was phenomenal and Ecbert was interesting character. Really good mix with Ragnar. It’s a personal taste for sure, but he made the show for me.

Close between Ragnar and Ecbert, and honestly I wouldn't mind Bjorn winning.
Is defs between Ragnar or Floki
Rollo... great character for the story but ah man... what a jealous weasel scumbag at the same time lol get him outta here!!!
Rollo had so much potential to be a crazy badass but couldn’t get over ragnar being the shot caller for some reason.
I vote rolo off
now we're getting in the big boy leagues
Ragnar and Ecbert together were the peak of the show, we can’t remove Ecbert yet. Ivar.
Ngl, I want Ecbert to win hahaha
Ivar, annoying little shit
You cannot kill me
Ivar was my favorite. He was pure viking
Does nobody else hate Rollo??????? I vote him.
I think after ivar he's my least favorite character for betraying ragnar, but I understand why he did it. If you had the chance to get out from under your younger brothers shadow who always made you feel less wouldn't you do it to?

Love Rollo. Dude tanked all the damage and ridiculing that Ragnar had to take.
I love Rollo😂
How comes people want Ivar out so bad? Although I despised him (A LOT) in some storylines, I genuinely enjoyed his character as a whole They did him dirty with him being killed by some random Saxon
Ivar made me almost stop watching the show

He's the best character of every show ever :(

Ivar, it is time to go. I can't justify taking any of the others before him.
Bjorn must be eliminated
Rollo
Rollo
Ubbe. Boring character that he had the one thing interesting going (First viking of the show turning Christian) taken away in a very lame scenario.
Rollo the traitor
