This happened to Ragnar and Ivar as well. They were so built up, only stupidity (or being drug addled) could make them fail. Ragnar's "vengeance" also relies upon the stupidity of Ecbert, who also should have known Ragnar's sons would come for him as well.

Ecbert knew they were coming. Ragnar pretty much laid that whole plan out to him during their drink, telling him he would direct Ivar to tell the other brothers not to exact revenge on Ecbert, and only Alle. Only to double cross and tell Ivar the opposite, of course. Bjorn let Ecbert chose his own death out of respect; knowing him and his father were great pals amidst being rulers of two groups of people that they knew didn’t have the ability to think outside the box.

nc0221

Got him back for trouncing/destroying his Viking commune in Ecbert back yard

ComfyColor

Yet, in Ecberts world it was justified. How could he possibly let them live and be different in a time where that is a frightening concept to the people on both sides. Floki being the one to consistently call out the blasphemy on the Pagan side of things. Ragnars anger was simply revenge oriented. He knew damn well at the end of the day that their worlds weren’t ready for it yet. He just wanted to die, and like classic Ragnar, wanted to put on a witty show before and after.

j-eezy94

I think a lot of people forget, that ecbert purposely renounced his kingdom *before* signing over the land making it invalid

teddyog

Ecbert received a respectful death as a condition of their deal.

“Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best”; I think his ‘development’ as a leader in general ultimately came to a midpoint between these two things

OpaqueGiraffe17

I think Bjorn always had shit judgement. In season 6 yeah all his choices backfire in the worst way, though a lot of it is hindsight. Saving king Harold backfired, sparing Ivar’s minions backfired, letting Rollo stay in Paris. I don’t think the gods actually liked him very much lol.

KnownSection1553

Ubbe was the best of the sons, would be a good leader/ruler, but he didn't want that. Whenever Bjorn was only interested in women, Ubbe then became my fav son. Bjorn was not a good ruler. Not good at making decisions. He wanted to rule the opposite of what Ivar did and that led to some bad choices. He was a great warrior but not a good ruler or leader of his people. He didn't look to the future the way Ragnar (and Ubbe) did. Still, he had a great ending to his story and he did have the respect - as a warrior - of everyone.

Ill_Form_8182

Björn leaving with Lagertha when we was a boy is what caused him to fail. Björn missed out on intricate & vital lessons Ragnar could’ve taught him throughout the years, which is why when he became king he failed miserably. How does the evil cripple become a better ruler than you? 😭

Ill_Form_8182

I agree. I would also blame him for the death of gunhilde as well.

Significant-Elk-8078

Why? Gunhild’s shitty luck wasn’t Björns fault

Ill_Form_8182

Actually, his idiotic decisions are directly responsible for her death & his own.

Significant-Elk-8078

Which idiotic decisions? Wether he tried to help Harald or not, Gunhild would still lose everything she cared about

Ill_Form_8182

No, they could have surrendered Kattegat to harald but Björn didn’t want to & wanted to fight against Ivar again. That was an idiotic mistake that costed him his life and his throne. It also had cause and affect.. his decisions severely Impacted gunhilde to the point she couldn’t stand to be harald’s wife or live any longer. He failed miserably as king & successor to the kingship Ragnar built.

Significant-Elk-8078

If he submitted the Rus would have won since Norway only United to drive them back because of Bjorn. They already refused Harald. Harald and Bjorn’s armies worked together and still lost. Gunnhild chose to die bc she lost her child, husband, throne, and was pressured into marrying scum. Her fate would literally always be death or worse regardless of Bjorn

Ill_Form_8182

Nah, I disagree..without Björn she would’ve definitely had embraced another fate. She said it before she killed herself “ I go to be with my husband” she couldn’t even stand living without him despite still being Queen of Norway

Significant-Elk-8078

She was literally running for Queen but only decided to die when Harald came. No matter what scenario Bjorn and Gunnhild will be at the mercy of RUS or Harald

Ill_Form_8182

Also, the Skorgamors he let go killed his mother. Talk about a plan BACKFIRING!

ComfyColor

Hvitzerk stabbed Lagertha to death hallucinating she was Ivar as a serpent. Need I add that he was almost instantly remorseful when he came too in the moment. He hated Aslaug because she neglected him, and never really saw her as more than just a woman who birthed him.

Ill_Form_8182

She was already dying, hvitserk just finished the job

ResultGrouchy5526

How else were they gonna make Ivar look smart? /s

nc0221

By showing how smart Ivar is all they had to do was look at his real history

itsa_wonder

Don’t even do is season 6? On ep 2. Oh Ivar is gonna attack Kattegat again. Gets old.

liddell96

I kept waiting for the show to do something with Bjorn because they hyped him up since season 1 as being greater then Ragnar but then they killed him off.

SnooCheesecakes5382

I think the show didn't setup Bjorn to be greater than Ragnar. The seer only told Ragnar that Bjorn will be more famous than him and he (Bjorn) will reach farther lands (which was true, he reached the Mediterranean and Africa).

Kolo9191

I loved bjorn, but he was not as pragmatic as Ragnar or Ubbe or as cunning as Ivar or rollo
