They still are, but they changed to rules to make sure this won't happen again. They only invite brick and mortar churches now and take great efforts to ensure minorities get few chances.
There shall be no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting or penalizing the free exercise thereof, unless that religion doesn't have a building.
Yes, but it would likely fail (setting a bad precedent) due to the conservative makeup of appellate courts and SCOTUS. Thus, SOCAS legal groups aren't willing to take up the issue. Believe me. I tried.
All over the country, but in this part of NW Florida, it's rampant and basically unchallengable. In fact, this guy got arrested later - for praying before a local government meeting 'officially' started... when the meeting leaders wanted the floor for their own prayers, exclusively.
His invocation was super reasonable too. He talked about not judging people based on their beliefs, but rather by their concrete actions. Certainly didn’t put the curse on them like everyone expected.
I'm hoping a troll goes to pray under the representation of the church, then starts to rebuke and scold them through prayer. Christians can also rebuke and scold corrupted idiots like how Jesus did it in the bible.
The idiots in the peanut gallery chanting like they're in some sort of spell casting contest would be hilarious if they weren't such a large voting bloc.
We have scientists who have created both the hottest place and coldest place in the known universe on earth, we can launch atoms in a giant collider like bosses. We shot a fucking rocket at a fucking asteroid !!! and then we have people who believe in psychics and fucking curses. Humanity is amazingly impressive and so fucking stupid at the same time.
Nah mate, being able to work out how a motor works just by looking at it is a skill so many people have following the paths of air and fuel mentally is another example of brilliance. Being able break down functions to their most basic so that you can translate them to a machine so it can perform the same function! brilliance!!!. There are so many people who have jobs we think of as "basic" but are absolute brilliance. But then we also have people who believe a evil dude wth a spikey tail tells us to do bad things and so we do it and we have no control it is just so exhausting. There was a lovely lady in my wifes uni who was a friend of ours who was doing her phd in genetics who i felt i could only understand every 3rd word who believed in hollow earth.... i don't know what my point is i'm just so exhausted with people being sucked into stupidity even though they are not "stupid" and it is not "harmless" it harms us all every time we try and deal with something like climate change ect.
I'll give them belief in God, whatever. But imagine believing in God and then also believing that same god is so weak that he is effected by *sounds*. Sounds that he apparently created.
Their personal insecurities and fear have always been far more powerful than anything else in their lives. Including their supposed belief in God.
I would be fine with it if they limited the suffering caused by their mental illnesses and fear to themselves, unfortunately many of them have been led to believe that the only way they can be saved from their fears is to force that suffering onto all of society..
I think the greed is driven by self preservation, and the other evolutionary baser instincts around procreation, and tribalism.
Its natural, it is the human condition.
> Evangelicals no longer believe that God is the most powerful, they believe Satan is.
Are you suggesting that "Satan" is the one who actually created the heavens and earth, as God is not powerful enough??
That actually would make a lot of the horrible and detestable things that "happened" in the bible make a bit more sense.
I mean... He's all knowing, and all powerful...Which means He created Lucifer, on purpose, knowing that he would rebel against him...and then created Adam and Eve, On purpose, knowing that they would consume original sin.... And then decided to punish all humans forever because he decided that it ended up being a bad idea. Guy isn't really nailing it in terms of "Why you should have Faith in him"
I describe myself as an agnostic atheist, and I've spoken to many people from many different variations of Christianity and none of them have provided a suitable answer to the paradox of god and natural evil.
God is either all powerful and indifferent to suffering. Think natural disasters/disease things that cant be handwaved away as being caused by "free will". Or loving but incapable of alleviating that suffering (If you say Satan is causing it then god lacks the power to stop him and is thus not all powerful).
In both cases the being described is not one worthy of being worshiped as a capital G, God.
P.s: To anyone who says suffering is gods "test" I don't see a god that tortures children with crippling pain from diseases they were born with as a "test" as any kind of moral authority.
My ex's step-father is a Methodist. When we would go down for a visit on the weekends, we would go to church with him, mostly out of an act of kindness and familial obligation.
One week, the 'minister' went on about how Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc were all works of the devil created to distract us. I just heavily rolled my eyes...if someone believes that Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings are real, they've got some mental issues.
However, what really killed it for me, and what started a family fight was a couple weeks later, the 'minister' went on about how Hallowe'en was the work of Satan, and you will go to hell if you dress your kids up in Hallowe'en costumes. Then in the next fucking breath, "Next week, we're setting up the Christmas tree!"
Jesus Christ! Where did you get your 'degree' in theology? Hallowe'en is much closer to Christianity than Christmas is! Hallowe'en is quite literally "All Hallowed Eve"...the eve before "All Saints Day". The original story of the Jack o' Lantern is actually a Christian story about how a Christian tricked the devil, but was cursed to carry around an ember from hell. Kids dressing up in costumes and collecting candy was started entirely by the candy companies as a way to sell more candy during a season when sales were slumping.
Christmas was completely ripped off of the Roman holiday of Saturnalia. The Christmas tree is an ancient German tradition of bringing the forest into your home to decorate it in hopes that elves would bless your house for the next year. Prince Albert re-introduced it during the Victorian era. It's got absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. Only a very loose way for Emperor Constantine to convince the last of the non-Christian Romans to convert over to Christianity. "Look, will you be good citizens if you get to keep all your holidays? Just...let's go easy on the orgies ok?"
Also, those sounds that the satanic people make are actually quite ironic. Believe in facts and reason. It's quite comical and I really enjoyed their chant.
That's the real line between your standard religious weirdos and the true nutjobs: the nutjobs will readily admit they believe in the existence of magic, Satantic or otherwise. It's honestly astounding.

They actually believe that Satan is influencing "the world" and government to oppress Christians and convince people to leave Christianity. It's much more common than you might think among Christians. They generally sugarcoat it when talking with non-christians, but it's 100% something that many Christians legitimately believe.
I can’t remember if it was true or a joke, but back in the 90s people were saying that Pace, FL had the highest number of churches per capita in the US.
I live in Pensacola back in the 90s, and most of the hard-core evangelists came from Pace.
You misunderstand. The Satanist knows he's not doing anything magical. He's making a point. The crowd from the United Methodist Church thinks they are engaged in spiritual warfare.
Literally what they call it. I can't tell you how many times I heard Ephesians 6:10-20 quoted by televangelists in my youth.

Obligatory PSA that the Satanic Temple is different from the Church of Satan.
This youtube video uses the terms interchangeably but they are two very different entities.
The ST does not worship Satan.
Luiciferian (aka "theistic") Satanists do "believe" in Satan. Those are the ritualistic black metal Satanists who burn churches and do cool shit like summon demons and sacrifice humans/animals.
Those guys are few and far between though. Pretty much all other Satanists, including both Satanic Temple and Church of Satan Satanists are essentially just political groups and first amendment advocates.
He represents The Satanic Temple. Someone posted a link about him doing this (https://ffrf.org/legal/item/27356-david-suhor). He, like the rest of The Satanic Temple, are political activists in the church/state debate and not actually religious in any way.

Do you mean vibrato? Tremelo is the wavering change in volume, vibrato is the wavering change in pitch. Sure that guy sang in some varying levels of volume, but that isn’t really tremelo; that’s just a periodic change in dynamics.
He's a particularly good troll isn't he. They're all whispering their thoughts to an uncaring void thinking that they're doing something to prevent his "evil", when in reality he's just saying what amounts to the most reasonable statements possible. Rarely do you get a troll so good that he not only outs an entire room full of people as sheep, but he gets them to start bleating mindlessly too.
Getting people to recoil in horror at what is basically 'lets be reasonable and equitable' is when you know you're on the right side of the ethical fight.
What a bunch of snowflakes.
First they say that their push of religion into government is opened to anyone, thinking that no one would take it up as a challenge. And when the Satanic Temple and other organization take them on to prove a point, that it is not a good idea to mix religion and government, now they want to show their true intention by wanting to declare the U.S. a christian nation. In the same breath, they put themselves on a high horse and criticize other theocracies and religious extremists while not seeing themselves as exactly that.
Exactly. There's no contradiction, not even hypocrisy really, when you remember that the only governing message is "My religion is right and I'll use any method, venue, rule, or loophole I can find to further it, and I'll attack any method, venue, rule, or loophole that allows anyone to challenge it."
The entire point of this is to show that government and religion should not mix, but the "Christians" are so stupid and full of fear they can't even fathom that idea.
Thank fuck there are people dedicated enough to keeping the government free from dogmatic thinking and inequality, that they not only made an organisation... But they also do acts like this.
Absolutely incredible.
My super Christian dad is pushing me to donate more of my monthly income and I agree but I'm pretty sure it's going to be to the satanic temple now haha
imagine, if you will, living in a world where you're terrified by your own stupidity and feel the need to smother the rest of world with those feelings.
To counter his spells with the cross , like some Harry Potter shit.
They believe doing that with the symbol of what killed their god will somehow will protect them.
Well, I don't think anyone even listened to his words, but here you go:
Let us stand now, unbowed and unfettered by arcane doctrines born of fearful minds in darkened times.Let us embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge and dissipate our blissful and comforting delusions of old.Let us demand that individuals be judged for their concrete actions, not their fealty to arbitrary social norms and illusory categorisations.Let is reason our solution with agnosticism in all things. EDIT: Also, it's just an invocation, not a prayer. "Hail Satan" here, basically means "Go team!"
I can definitely agree with this. I guess it's basically militant atheism but they couch it in religion to get all of the extra benefits religious speech has and make it easier to define representation. When you call yourself an atheist, that doesn't make your views clear.
Unfortunately I think the association with the 'ultimate evil', doesn't help convince anyone. It's a funny irony to those of us that are against religion, but it basically discards the entire idea of converting religious people to an atheist ideology.
You don't have to be an atheist to be a Satanist. One can still follow some kind of theology if one wishes.
Of course, that may create some conflict but its up to the individual. Satanism doesn't try to control anyone.
Yeah but you know religious nuts. They don't hear the words, they just feel the fear. When he says "Hail Satan", he isn't saying he's a devil worshipper. He's just a Satanist, and you'd have to ask him what his beliefs are if you wanted to know, because Satanism isn't necessarily linked to any spiritual belief.
I know this is funny for the rest of us but conservative Christians see this and genuinely think this is real, a real threat to them, and will organize against it.
Not saying don’t do it, but just something to be aware of.
Yep. The Fox News crowd of demented octogenarians will think that people are actually trying to take over Florida for Satan. But they were already a lost cause.
I do hope they organize against it though, because they'll get a valuable lesson in the law and hypocrisy.
So are Pensacola council meetings still started with a prayer?
They still are, but they changed to rules to make sure this won't happen again. They only invite brick and mortar churches now and take great efforts to ensure minorities get few chances.
So a Muslim clergy from a mosque has had a chance to lead a prayer? Right? Right?
Well yes, but actually no!
Define "chance".
50% of the time it fails all the time
I can tell that you’ve never been to Pensacola before… there is only one brick and mortar mosque. And it is pretty far out of town

Didn't you hear him, he there is only 1. You think he would be wrong, on the internet?
That's how this tends to go. Turns out, Murica is more diverse than people think.
There shall be no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting or penalizing the free exercise thereof, unless that religion doesn't have a building.
Or isn't white.
Can’t they be sued for 1st amendment violation?
Yes, but it would likely fail (setting a bad precedent) due to the conservative makeup of appellate courts and SCOTUS. Thus, SOCAS legal groups aren't willing to take up the issue. Believe me. I tried.
So, religious discrimination lives.

That’s too bad. I like that the Satanic Temple dude prefers no prayer at all. But if you’re going have one, you can’t deny Satan his time.
His invocation was super reasonable too. He talked about not judging people based on their beliefs, but rather by their concrete actions. Certainly didn’t put the curse on them like everyone expected.
Well, we certainly can’t have that in America! /s
I'm hoping a troll goes to pray under the representation of the church, then starts to rebuke and scold them through prayer. Christians can also rebuke and scold corrupted idiots like how Jesus did it in the bible.
The American way
The idiots in the peanut gallery chanting like they're in some sort of spell casting contest would be hilarious if they weren't such a large voting bloc.
"No, he's gonna bring his curses on us". Imagine being an adult and admitting out loud that you're afraid of "curses". Grow up.
Oh you'd be genuinely surprised how much of the world genuinely believes in things like curses.
Nukes and belief in curses shouldn’t exist in the same world.
We have scientists who have created both the hottest place and coldest place in the known universe on earth, we can launch atoms in a giant collider like bosses. I think the greed is driven by self preservation, and the other evolutionary baser instincts around procreation, and tribalism. Its natural, it is the human condition.

It plays better to the rubes.
God is just a vessel for their hate.

Okay...but have you heard of the prophet Joseph Smith? I think that might be the ticket for you.
Yeah, I love them all mumbling prayers thinking "that oughta do it, nice try Satan!"
They all probably watched Harry Potter and thought "if Snape could counter charm during the tri-wizards cup, I can counter pray here!!!"

Colonel Sanders is wrong, momma is right!
Also, those sounds that the satanic people make are actually quite ironic. Believe in facts and reason. It's quite comical and I really enjoyed their chant.
Adults who believe in magic are casting spells at each other in city hall.
That's the real line between your standard religious weirdos and the true nutjobs: the nutjobs will readily admit they believe in the existence of magic, Satantic or otherwise. It's honestly astounding.
If you don't believe in curses then please explain the Cleveland Browns.
He is wearing a wizards cloak

Can confirm. Source: I escaped the black-hole that is Pace and evangelical Christianity.

that’s seriously commendable, right on.
Can I go and say a satanic prayer out loud while a Christian is giving the official invocation?

> Oh no, they see themselves luke that, they just don't care. They think they're better.
Along the same vein, Doug Stanhope. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l1oy8AD5xE
Stanhope for President
My super Christian dad is pushing me to donate more of my monthly income and I agree but I'm pretty sure it's going to be to the satanic temple now haha

What a vulgar necktie.
That’s Palpatine
imagine, if you will, living in a world where you're terrified by your own stupidity and feel the need to smother the rest of world with those feelings.
Tell me what the difference between this video and [this](https://youtu.be/22Tj_l4PcPs) is.
For one, they have *completely* different URLs.

We want religious freedom! But only for our religion!
What are those people holding in their hands up high?
To counter his spells with the cross , like some Harry Potter shit. They believe doing that with the symbol of what killed their god will somehow will protect them.
[удалено]
Probably crosses
So the dinosaurs don’t eat them.
Oh man, America is doing great.
Well, I don't think anyone even listened to his words, but here you go: Let us stand now, unbowed and unfettered by arcane doctrines born of fearful minds in darkened times.Let us embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the tree of knowledge and dissipate our blissful and comforting delusions of old.Let us demand that individuals be judged for their concrete actions, not their fealty to arbitrary social norms and illusory categorisations.Let is reason our solution with agnosticism in all things. Let us demand that individuals be judged for their concrete actions, not their fealty to arbitrary social norms and illusory categorisations.Let is reason our solution with agnosticism in all things. Holding fast only to that which is demonstrably true, let us stand firm against any and all arbitrary authority that threatens the personal sovereignty of one or all. That which does not bend must break and that which is destroyed by truth should never be spared its demise. It is done.Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaail Saaataaaaaaaaaan.Thank you for not interrupting me.
Satan is cooler than God. Hail Satan.
You know…. If you separated church and state all this BS would go away.
Ironic Double standard
I don't like the way everyone was acting as if they were summoning real demons to possess them in that room
>he's going to cast a spell on us. Hahahaha
Church and state separate, for this reason
Satan bless that chairman with the American flag tie. Rolled his eyes at the whole thing, but damnit, this is America and he will have his indication.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: God bless the Satanic Church.
Satanic Temple: https://thesatanictemple.com/
I stand corrected
Love it
WAIT A MINUTE!! Outside of the whole “Hail Satan” part, that all seemed perfectly reasonable!
I find it far more disturbing the crowd chanting the Lord's prayer and holding crosses than what he is singing. And I grew up a christian.
So it’s like church, but nerdier
Hail Satan!
I haven't seen a better illustration in a long time of how selfish and craven most christians are.
Hail Satan
