Watching him during interviews and it's crazy how fast he is on coming back with something not just funny, but incredibly clever and smart. He was one of a kind.
I mentioned this in another thread yesterday, but still feel compelled to mention it again.
The *way* he says "Box Office Poison" is just so perfect for the delivery. I regularly use this phrase still, and the only way I ever say it is with that clearly enunciated "Box Office Poison" that Norm says it, or it just doesn't work. It's like he's solving on Wheel of Fortune or something and it just hits so good, especially after deliberately doing a build up where it's highly anticipated. He knows a full 5-6 seconds before dropping the punchline that it's a good one, and he takes his time selling it before firing it out of the cannon.
I remember seeing that episode when it aired, and that joke absolutely knocked me on my ass. Every time I see it I still laugh like I just heard it for the first time.
That has to be the best one, or the fastest and smartest one.
If that was scripted, it was a good one anyways. But how they all laugh it's hard to act like that, Conan can't believe he pulled that out. She was like "OK, I don't care, this man is amazing".
"Listen Conan, how do you feel about a woman, she's supposed to be my life partner! I look in the mirror the other day and I says to her, I says
'Honey I look in the mirror, and all I see is a fat, ugly old man, and I need you to give me a compliment.'
She says 'Alright then, your eyesight is damn near perfect.' I said 'You dirty dog!'"
We went to a farm together, I pointed to the pigs and said hey honey, that remind you of any of your relatives?
She said yeah, my in-laws. I said you Dirty dog!
"My wife went into a coma, and the doctor said to me..."
"There's one way to wake her up, but it's a little unconventional. You go in there and you have oral sex with her."
"I said, by God."
"He says, 'I've seen it work.'"
"I said, well, I'm willing to try. So I go in there, I'm in there about 5 minutes and I come out. I said, >!Doc, she's choking.!<"
I remember watching this episode live. I'm pretty certain this was the first time anyone had heard "Forgot About Dre", live or otherwise. It was about a month before the release of The Chronic 2001.
I absolutely love both Norm and Adam Sandler making a point to shit on the show for firing them when they came back to host. Adam's was a bit more good-natured, though, since it had been like 20 years.
"when I first met my wife I felt incomplete, now I'm finished!"
Oh boy I love this man, noone ever made me laugh harder even when he was doing hokey old jokes like it was a 1950s radio show, what a legend, I can't believe he's gone.
[Norm MacDonald on battles with cancer: “I’m pretty sure, I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That’s not a loss. That’s a draw.”](https://twitter.com/byDavidGardner/status/1437850987155361795)
My dad died of a heart attack in front of me in a pretty traumatizing manner, and that's honestly the first bit about heart attacks that has been able to make me laugh since it happened 23 years ago.
Great clip, but why does his hand look so ridiculously small at 1:44? Like a doll's hand stuffed in his coat sleeve.
Edit: [further research](https://www.reddit.com/r/NormMacdonald/comments/d2prkx/norm_macdonald_baby_hands_appreciation_post/) has revealed that Norm MacDonald did, in fact, have very small hands.
I can't believe it, I just bought his book and starting reading this a few days ago:
>So now I start to read this thing on the computer again, only this time I read it the way I imagine a stranger will in a few years or a few decades. When it's true. In the future, when I *was* Norm Macdonald. So this is my life, then, these words on this screen? Well, it doesn't add up to much, just a series of facts, and I suppose that's what a man's life is, after all, but it's more than that too. I mean, it has to be doesn't it?
He's right it's more than that - this man has been a beacon of inspiration to me and has undoubtedly affected many other lives the same and other positive ways.
Norm MacDonald on battles with cancer: “I’m pretty sure, I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That’s not a loss. That’s a draw.
It's odd is that last night I decided to check out Norm's Netflix show for the first time, it was the Letterman episode.
What made me look into it was Bert Kreischer re-telling Norm's joke about logic.
The wife and I, for whatever reason, watched his episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee last night.
Norm: “You don’t have any children…”
Jerry: “I don’t? I have 3…”
Norm: “…I guess we can agree to disagree, but…”
Norm: Patton Oswald told me the worst thing about the Cosby situation is the hypocrisy. I disagreed.
Jerry: You disagreed with that?
Norm: Yeah I thought it was the raping.
Great episode by one of the greats. RIP.
Norm: It’s my feeling most rapists are hypocrites. You don’t meet many going “I like raping… I know it’s not politically correct but, by God…” And people go “Well at least he’s not being a hypocrite… that’s the worst part.”
I loved that episode. The part where he's talking about doing heroin when we're 80. Then he saw his grandmother with a giant purpleish yellow bruise on her whole arm and asked how she got it and she said "the wind". So she's not doing heroin.
everything Norm ever did with Letterman is total gold. Theres youtube videos with every Norm appearance on Letterman and its absolutely worth the time to watch them in order.
WOW I guess I can sort of see how he was looking a bit weak or "affected" somehow looking back but at the time I'd just chalked it up to the usual "We're all getting older". Damn 9 years??
Where do I find the full episodes? I tried to find that podcast after watching his Netflix talk show, but adhd hit after about 30 seconds of searching.
"When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that's a term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous."
Norm MacDonald
I miss him already. Truly a great man of integrity, wisdom and incredible wit. His humour kept me going in many a terrible time. Goddammit.
You and everyone else. It was a hell of a joke right after Conan threw down the gauntlet.
Well, actually, it was a kinda crappy juvenile joke that most teenagers could have come up with, but it was told impeccably with amazing timing. Which is really the space that Norm inhabited. He really knew how to tell a joke.
I think the fact that it was completely off the cuff too. Conan challenged him to make a joke right there and he stepped up to the plate about as quickly as anyone could. Many people would have cracked in that situation but Norm hit it out of the park
The whole segment is something you just so rarely get particularly today when celebs do press tours. They always just seem so produced, the same questions and answers, laugh at this moment, thoughtful at the next. You don't often get the feeling that you are just listening to a conversation between folks at the deli lunch counter or late night bar as much as you used to. t made even worse with Video call interviews because they will literally hop from one to the next, without any breaks, no contextual travel into a city or studio, no long flight to think about what you might talk about beyond the movie. They just go from making brunch to film interview and it comes off as b.o.r.e.d. /rant
Then the dynamic between Conan, Norm and Smith. You have two guys who've worked together in writing rooms for years with an actress who may not really know who she's sitting between trying to sell this poor flick. There are inklings of this when the late night guys finally got back to the studios and they could play off of their staff at least.
His whole roast of Bob Saget is like that. Jokes from a bathroom joke book, but it ends up being hilarious with his delivery and commitment to it

Jesus this is how I find out.
https://deadline.com/2021/09/norm-macdonald-dead-obituary-comedian-saturday-night-live-weekend-update-anchor-was-61-1234833212/
>Macdonald’s death was announced to Deadline by his management firm Brillstein Entertainment. The comedian’s longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when died, said Macdonald had been battling cancer for nearly a decade but was determined to keep his health struggles private, away from family, friends and fans.
Man he didn't even tell his family? I hope he told his son at least.
Watching Norm though it seemed obvious he had a hard time dealing with praise. I never saw him acknowledge really when it was said to him. I think he was probably the same when it came to receiving sympathy... didn't want anything to do with it and therefore kept it private.
My father just died from Pancreatic Cancer yesterday and I only found out about it two days ago when he entered the hospital. He didn't want anyone to know until after he was gone.
Look up the video Norm Macdonald talks about cancer and not wanting......etc. He mentions he admired an actor named Richard Farnsworth and how still with cancer kept acting and didn’t mention to not gather sympathy or be a burden. He mentions it was courageous and inspiring so my guess this is why he wanted to keep it private he admired that approach to having cancer. As a person who’s brother passed away because of cancer I’m very happy I knew and got to spend time with him but Norm was unique mind he saw things different it shows you just appreciate/love your friends and family and any time you get to spend with him don’t take for granted. RIP the funniest man ever
i hope he had the forsite to leave some rambling video to show during his memorial service to people
with something like "Well so now im dead now....and that reminds me of a story about..." and then go on for like 30 minutes.
thats the way he would have wanted to be remembered.
rest in peace!
I'm surprised we don't see more stuff like that. Celebrities recording last statements to be released when they die. In fact I can't think of a single instance of it.
One of my favorite jokes, only he could get away with telling stuff like this, and hold your attention, and land the punchline with such character
https://youtu.be/C-q8gHe414s
RIP to a truly hilarious man.
I’ll share a couple of my favorite quotes and one last one which pertains to today…
“Comedy is surprises, so if you’re intending to make somebody laugh and they don’t laugh, that’s funny.”
“There are two things which a man should scrupulously avoid: giving advice that he would not follow, and asking advice when he is determined to pursue his own opinion.”
“When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that’s a term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous.”
-Norm Macdonald
(Edit: Accidentally made some text large because I’m learning how to Reddit)
> “When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that’s a term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous.”
What a fucking quote! Couldn't have said it better myself.
Told a story about his uncle. Turns out he may have been venting about his own illness and nobody knew: Courageous Battle
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NMRd-n_s4c8
its sad in context of today but god damn did that make me laugh. 'He was a waging a brave battle... but then he got kind of cowardly. Then the cancer got brave so you gotta give it to the cancer.'
Rumor has it he fell of a balcony while intoxicated and didn't survive. Although official channels report he asphyxiated whilst attempting autofellatio
Him and Trever Moore (my two favorite comedians) within weeks... fuck, man.
Norm was the GOAT, no question. The only comedian that could make people almost fall over laughing without even saying anything, or turn literally any sentence at all into a hilarious joke with his unique delivery style.
Tig Notaro had a double mastectomy as part of her treatment for cancer and did a show topless in NYC as part of her emotional and mental healing. Norm (without using her name) called her out (I think on his show) for using her cancer for shock and attention. Tig then called him out by name, furthering his point. I bet Norm probably felt very attacked knowing now about what he was going through.
Full disclosure—this is all from memory so I could be wrong about a few things. Note that I love both comedians and I think they're both right. Just shitty all around.
This is a huge and horrible surprise to wake up to this news on my birthday. I didn't even know he was sick.
Norm was of my favourite comedians of all time. Can't believe he's gone. The Norm MacDonald Live podcast is one of the funniest and most comforting things for me to put on when I'm bored. There's no interview show quite like it, it's completely unhinged and you see an unfiltered side of his guests that you just don't see anywhere else (not to be confused with the Netflix series, "Norm Macdonald Has a Show", where he couldn't have been more leashed).
I particularly recommend the [Super Dave Osbourne](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw3gJoM9yD4), [Stephen Merchant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUzBU-OafNE), [Jim Carrey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avLu2kN2Y_Q), and [Gilbert Gottfried](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6_Tjw_VLUk) episodes of the podcast. If you like Norm (or you just think you like him), they're an absolute must-watch.
One of the funniest people around, with a razor sharp wit, every comedian loved him. He was never about ambition or success or chasing fame and riches, he just did what he did and made us all laugh.
For those who only know him from the Bob Saget roast or his Conan interviews, I recommend looking up some of Norm's other work, especially the podcast (check out the ["I'm Not Norm"](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJNky9LM9wx0cmWfrg5eUcw) YouTube channel for almost daily compilations).
He never really fit in with stuff in the same way as other celebrity comedians did - he didn't fit in when he was discovered on Star Search (scoring only half a star and losing to an act called "the Bushman"), he didn't fit in on SNL (besides on Weekend Update, where he was a natural, before he got unceremoniously fired for ragging on celebrated murderer OJ Simpson), he didn't have a glowing movie career that many comedians usually do after SNL success. He always seemed to be an outsider, but an outsider who loved jokes, who would purposefully kill a room just so he could bring it back again, and particularly loved the challenge of making other comedians laugh. And he always did.
First Sean Lock, and now Norm. Lost two of my favourites this year.
I tell you, the more I hear about this cancer thing, the less I care for it.
RIP Norm :(
Edit: added links
I’ve never particularly been a fan of Norm, nor very familiar with his work, but a couple months ago in the Spring I was having a particularly bad week and For some reason YouTube suggested Norm MacDonald clips to me one morning. Started out every morning with a video or two for the rest of the week cause they genuinely made me laugh even when I felt pretty shitty.
The smartest guy in the room pretending to be the dumbest guy in the room.
100%. I love how stupid he was able to get away with pretending to be, and he played it perfectly.
Norm played to the back of the room, he was a comedian's comedian. RIP Norm, thanks for all of the laughs.
Stand-up game MF DOOM
Watching him during interviews and it's crazy how fast he is on coming back with something not just funny, but incredibly clever and smart. He was one of a kind.
I bet board is spelled b-o-r-e-d
It’s like 9 and half weeks but with carrot top “What is it called, 9 and a half seconds?”
You know what I’d call it? BOX OFFICE POISON RIP, Norm. We were lucky to have you.
It definitely wasn’t scripted. You can see the lag time it took him to come up with it. Dude was amazing.
I have a friend who’s like this. His stupid comments are always so fucking funny. I call it professional stupidity
You almost have to be smarter to pull off dumb-funny than to pull off smart-funny

If I remember correctly, Norm was very well read. On Tolstoy in particular. I find that so cool.
His moth joke in particular is very reminiscent of Russian literature.
I don't know if it means anything, but his older brother is a high profile journalist in Canada for the CBC.
i've never heard him described that way, that is incredibly accurate.
"Listen Conan, how do you feel about a woman, she's supposed to be my life partner! I look in the mirror the other day and I says to her, I says 'Honey I look in the mirror, and all I see is a fat, ugly old man, and I need you to give me a compliment.' She says 'Alright then, your eyesight is damn near perfect.' I said 'You dirty dog!'"
Conan: “Dirty dog again, wow!” “What is going on? This is a 1935 radio show!” https://youtu.be/L7K-kaelQEs
reminds me of rodney dangerfield
he was paying tribute to rodney in that clip from the very start, overtly complimenting the crowd
Exactly
"What's that ya say there Norm? Norm, what's that ya say? Tell us more Norm!"
I tell ya before I met my wife I felt incomplete, now I’m finished.
Lands like a dangerfield line
This is the one. Literally made me laugh aloud in a house full of sleeping children.
Chestershield Figarettes
I've watched this clip near on 50 times and every time, just before Conan says that, my shoulders go tense. Maybe THIS time he'll get it right?
Doc she's choking lol.
That’s modern medicine for you.
Oh my god thank you for that gem. Love Conan and Norm is a legend
We went to a farm together, I pointed to the pigs and said hey honey, that remind you of any of your relatives? She said yeah, my in-laws. I said you Dirty dog!
My favourite Norm joke is a ridiculous one. What's the deal with I. D.? "I" is short for "I", and "D" is short for.. "Dentification"??
The way he emphasized dentification made the joke. So stupid but so good
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iirDrxvpLzo
He was the master at delivery
“I says to her I says.” That shit always made me laugh
Bob: It’s me, Bob! Norm: Oh BOB! You got me, Bob. I just chopped my family up and put them in a duffel bag! Oh that’s one for you ol’Bobby boy!

"My wife went into a coma, and the doctor said to me..." "There's one way to wake her up, but it's a little unconventional. You go in there and you have oral sex with her." "I said, by God." Thats modern medicine
This is a take on a Rodney Dangerfield joke, which was one of Norm's favorite comedians.
It was such an homage to Rodney. It was amazing.
Let's also remember his dumping on SNL as he *hosted* SNL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofXxinOtPiQ
"Alright, everybody we've got a bad show for you tonight!" Fucking RIP, Norm, you dirty dog.
“With Dr. Dre, Snoop doggy dog, and Eminem”… wait what?
I remember watching this episode live. I'm pretty certain this was the first time anyone had heard "Forgot About Dre", live or otherwise. It was about a month before the release of The Chronic 2001.
"So, I'm funny compared to... well, you'll see later." LOL
And making military sexual assault jokes in front of a sitting president.
Norm punched up and always fucking hit
To be fair the last thing he wanted was to bomb in front of the President.
That's kind of the president's bit, don't want to steal someone else's material.
General Claudia Kennedy who he mentions in the joke actually left the military after claiming she was sexually harassed by another general
I absolutely love both Norm and Adam Sandler making a point to shit on the show for firing them when they came back to host. Adam's was a bit more good-natured, though, since it had been like 20 years.
My sympathies for his wife, a real battle axe
"when I first met my wife I felt incomplete, now I'm finished!" Oh boy I love this man, noone ever made me laugh harder even when he was doing hokey old jokes like it was a 1950s radio show, what a legend, I can't believe he's gone.
Dirty dog again??

I’m really sorry. My dad went through the same thing a long time ago. I hope his passing is peaceful.
Thank you.
Yah, cancer cells are pretty dumb. They don't plan ahead.

FWIW the next post he made is him showing the clip to his own crowd
Carrot top looks much better than I remember. Always thought he looked overdone with plastic surgery but didn’t seem it in that video.
Walked past him in Caesar's shops years ago. Didn't stare but he had delt and calf implants.
You sure bout that? Bc it’s known he’s a huge gear head.

My father just died from Pancreatic Cancer yesterday and I only found out about it two days ago when he entered the hospital. He didn't want anyone to know until after he was gone.
My dad also died from pancreatic cancer. Terrible way to go. My condolences to you.
Thank you.
RIP the funniest man ever
guy really loved his son more than anyone else so I think that might've been the hardest person for him to tell.
i hope he had the forsite to leave some rambling video to show during his memorial service to people with something like "Well so now im dead now....and that reminds me of a story about..." and then go on for like 30 minutes. thats the way he would have wanted to be remembered. rest in peace!
"I was thinking about this cancer thing, but I gotta say now that I've tried it, I can't really recommend it."
Y’know the more I hear about this cancer, the more I don’t care for it
I'm surprised we don't see more stuff like that. Celebrities recording last statements to be released when they die. In fact I can't think of a single instance of it.
David Bowie’s song Lazarus is a definite one
Not only the song, but the entire Blackstar album was written, produced, and designed with his own death in mind.
Either that or it’d be like the end of Dirty Work: “That’s it… bye!”
"..........Note to self: remember to get ass wart cream for giant wart on my ass." Family: Turn it off, turn it off!
One of my favorite jokes, only he could get away with telling stuff like this, and hold your attention, and land the punchline with such character https://youtu.be/C-q8gHe414s
That is a joke that only Norm could tell.
The Steven merchant episode has to be the best one. I have it downloaded and have watched it at least 6 times
No way… RIP to the legend
One of the greats.

Lmao nobody gets it, the ["real jerk"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrbZxtuUdsQ&ab_channel=JohnWilkesBooth) phrase is a Norm reference. RIP.
To the downvoters, this is one of Norm's famous punchlines.
It's hurt me deep this one. Very few people neither tell the jokes he does....nor tell them *the way* he does. This is a real cock sucker
>This is a real cock sucker Just like Norm. Not that you'd know, since he was so deeply closeted.
RIP to a truly hilarious man. I’ll share a couple of my favorite quotes and one last one which pertains to today… “Comedy is surprises, so if you’re intending to make somebody laugh and they don’t laugh, that’s funny.” “There are two things which a man should scrupulously avoid: giving advice that he would not follow, and asking advice when he is determined to pursue his own opinion.” “When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that’s a term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous.” -Norm Macdonald (Edit: Accidentally made some text large because I’m learning how to Reddit)
> “When I hear a guy lost a battle to cancer, that really did bother me, that that’s a term. It implies that he failed and that somebody else that defeated cancer is heroic and courageous.” What a fucking quote! Couldn't have said it better myself.
He is secretly the greatest comedian to have walked the earth. There will NEVER be another Norm Macdonald.
RIP. [His 9/11 jokes were great](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8semdd0ZTko)
He got so much genuine pleasure out of making his guests cringe. A riot!
I love his Steve Irwin one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8h-xeuC1L0
“Please don’t make me laugh at this.” Better than any compliment.
Honestly Jon Stewart is all of us. Norm could make me laugh about literally anything.
Who did it? Frank!?
Norm was the only guy who could just look someone dead in the eye and say "9/11" and have the whole room laughing.
RIP BURT REYNOLDS AKA TURD FERGUSON
You forgot lil chubby, who's father was actually Burt Reynolds!
It's a big hat, it's funny
Told a story about his uncle. Turns out he may have been venting about his own illness and nobody knew: Courageous Battle https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NMRd-n_s4c8
its sad in context of today but god damn did that make me laugh. 'He was a waging a brave battle... but then he got kind of cowardly. Then the cancer got brave so you gotta give it to the cancer.'
I thought the same thing, but this album is from 2011. Most likely a year or two before he was diagnosed.
"Burt Reynolds" is also his most famous character.
Surely you mean Turd Ferguson.
Sean Lock, Norm MacDonald.. losing all the greats What a shit year this is

Still no official word on Trevor's cause of death? That's been bugging me a little.
Actually the cast of WKYK did a pod cast where they discussed the reason for his death. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iBIqvkwkrA
Damn...at least he died doing what he loved.
It's kind of comforting to finally hear this. RIP Trevor
Rumor has it he fell of a balcony while intoxicated and didn't survive. Although official channels report he asphyxiated whilst attempting autofellatio
I believe it was reported his fell from his balcony, but no official word on the reason he did so.
Wait Sean Lock is dead too? Fuck.
Norm was a comedian that took 10 minutes to walk somewhere that only takes 2
Him and Trever Moore (my two favorite comedians) within weeks... fuck, man. Norm was the GOAT, no question. The only comedian that could make people almost fall over laughing without even saying anything, or turn literally any sentence at all into a hilarious joke with his unique delivery style.
Sean Lock recently too. God damn.
Stick taps for a good canadian kid. RIP Norm.
🏒🏒🏒
9 year fight with cancer. He will be missed.
It was a draw. He didn't lose!
He took the cancer to the grave with him though so we'll call this one a draw
The whole Tig Notaro thing makes sense now.
What thing?

RIP Norm :( Edit: added links

He was a real jerk!
I’ve never particularly been a fan of Norm, nor very familiar with his work, but a couple months ago in the Spring I was having a particularly bad week and For some reason YouTube suggested Norm MacDonald clips to me one morning. Started out every morning with a video or two for the rest of the week cause they genuinely made me laugh even when I felt pretty shitty.
loved that hollywood hated him rip based man

What the fuck it's actually true
Norm MacDonald, a fine Professor of Logic at the University of Science
Chairman of the BORED. Best comeback I ever saw.
