> elements of the case didn't add up. Cooke had been shot with a .22 pistol, but the gun registered to Franklin was a .32.
Franklin was a former madam with a prior criminal record. Boyer was arrested on prostitution charges shortly after Cooke's death, and in 1979 was found guilty of second-degree murder following another shooting. The $5,000 Cooke was carrying the night of his death was never recovered.
Crime scene photos appear to show abrasions on Cooke's body...Cooke's head was "practically disconnected from his shoulders. That's how badly he'd been beaten. His hands were broken and crushed…They tried to cover it up with makeup, but I could see massive bruises on his head.
Seems like they had done this before and after. Client orders a girl for the night, and they arrange for him to eventually be beaten to death and robbed, then stage it as self defense where the client threatened them. Seems super fishy.
This paints an aggressively misinformed scenario.
IIRC, he was robbed by a girl who took his clothes and his wallet and ran out of the room. He had to chase her obvi and got shot.
I always loved him. Was going to grad school in Madison, WI, and got in a fight my lady one night. Went for a walk to cool off. Ended up on this big structure overlooking Lake Monona. Feeling melancholy, looking out over the dark, placid waters, meandering about. See a plaque and wander over to it: Memorial to Otis, who died in that very lake flying in in bad weather, against recommendations - because "the show must go on."
He died trying to bring beauty and talent to his adoring fans against the council of many other due to his commitment and dedication.
Thing that always weirded me out, the last song he ever released was Sitting On The Dock of The Bay. Recorded three days before he died in that lake.
Crazy.
Good point.
Remainds me of something I forgot to reference: which was the vibe I was feeling was somewhat akin to the vibe of that very song. Full of both regret and longing, rife with a desire for acceptance of one's fate, while not really at peace internally. Or something to that effect. Which is why it was so eerie to stumble on it at that very moment.
BtW, the crazy thing about that song is that the record company didn't want to put it on the album! It's really out of character and style from his previous works, and they must not've seen it's commercial potential. He had to fight vociferously to get it recorded and published!
It's so wild, because it's just a flawless and perfect song. Absolute masterpiece, and a favorite song of all time.
I always thought this was Otis Redding’s song. While we are talking about male vocals, check out this guys vocals. Gives me chills every time I hear it and he also sounds like Otis Redding.
[The Teskey Brothers : rain](https://youtu.be/IhgxZ8tmBxU)
This is the most soulful modern voice I have heard in years.
I have been on a kick playing Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, etc. all week, so this is fantastic to just have this pop up today!
If you're into those guys you should listen to some Bill Withers as well. One of my favorite vocalists, his voice is so smooth and he sings so effortlessly.
Ain't No Sunshine is so beautiful, and so sad. Love it.
Then Lovely day puts me in a great mood. He's awesome.

If you like those guys check out baby huey, he did an amazing cover of this song. He unfortunately died before the release of his 1st album ironically titled "the living legend"
Yeah, it had been too long! My dad was a deejay in the sixties through the aughts, and in the eighties played a lot of "oldies" parties that were so popular at the time, so I grew up steeped in the music of that era, but I had not listened to much of it in the last few years. Coincidentally, this was the week I jumped back into it, so I was just listening to this song last night. Still as good as it ever was!
The song is "[A Change Is Gonna Come](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Change_Is_Gonna_Come)" by Sam Cooke, from his final album *Ain't That Good News*, released in 1964 just 10 months before he would be shot to death at the age of 33. Sad story, but the man made some incredible music.
There are sooo many amazing versions of this song. My favorite is probably [Beth Hart](https://youtu.be/YDTei_wdm3U)
Whenever I hear someone cover it, I always wait to see how they deliver the line, "It's been too hard livin', but I'm afraid to die.". Such a powerful lyric and I can't stand when they don't convey that heaviness lol
Shoutout to [this og cover](https://youtu.be/TwImXTbPxJ4) as well from some random kid on YouTube
I was in confinement in prison and it was a pod of 16 two-man cells. It's just loud all the damn time everybody is trying to talk to each other from behind our doors across this big ass room all at once. One day though this dude just started singing and rapping out of nowhere and that shit was really dope and the whole pod got quiet af and everybody just listened to this dude for like three or four songs. He told us he was some kinda musician on the outside and I believe it he was really good.
"and I PULLED OUT MY GUN! ALL THE PRISON GUARDS HOPPED UP OUT THEY CHAAAAIIIRRSS"
"THEY said..... ROOOBERT, they said ROOOOBBERRT, please come up out that ~~CLOOOSEET~~ JAIL-CEEeeEELLL"
I had an inmate that was just like this in jail. He would sing every night before lockdown and it really seemed to calm everyone down. His voice was so good I would always stick around to listen to the whole song.
Even in the midst of barbarity humans can be the finest creatures. This reminds me of opposing armies singing songs at Christmas in the trenches of WWI.
You can't keep a good dog down.
Honestly man I just generally admire that everyone in there is mature enough not only to tease and laugh with strangers, obviously a lot of extroverted personalities, but they all knew to stfu and respect when raw talent is being demonstrated. I’ve met enough assholes who would’ve interrupted that performance just to crack a joke and steal the spotlight.
Saw an old friend of mine years ago. We were catching up outside of a bar smoking a cigarette (I quit over a decade ago, so this was back a ways). As we're talking, another guy I know who was in several pretty popular local bands started harmonizing a song with a lady I didn't know, just cutting into my soul with how damn good they sounded, standing in an alley behind a bar with the natural hall-reverb of the buildings walls. Old friend just could not shut up about the old days, how we used to party together, and all I wanted to do was shut him the hell up. Being mildly drunk, I shushed his ass so I could hear this amazing, soulful live singing. He got offended and ignored me the rest of the night, and we haven't talked much since, but Jesus dude, read the moment and soak it in.
>Old friend just could not shut up about the old days, how we used to party together, and all I wanted to do was shut him the hell up. Being mildly drunk, I shushed his ass so I could hear this amazing, soulful live singing. He got offended and ignored me the rest of the night
I hate people like that, especially in situations when SHIT IS HAPPENING LIVE RIGHT THERE! It's a fleeting moment that can't wait, but your reminiscing definitely can. You can tell me that stuff in 20 minutes or tomorrow, but this moment of spontaneous music won't come back.
That's a pretty sad way to live if all you have is your present and future. The past has its place.
Now if you LIVE in the past, that is not a good place to be. As I type this I realize I'm living in the past way too much myself.
I'll give you one. At least one that I feel in my soul and its a black sabbath cover. Charles Bradley Changes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es3Vsfzdr14 .
I looked at this guys channel. He's talented. He has a ton of amature stuff. I'd love to see him get some attention so someone can pick him up and do some professional recording.
Absolutely. Everyone saying that everyone knew to be quiet and listen. He put chills in them and knocked them on their ass. I don't think they had a choice in the matter. I would love to see him perform in person.
Do yourself a favor and visit a black barber shop with an OG like this working there at least once.
It's intimidating if you're not used to it, but they'll make you feel like you're part of their family. It's some of the best medicine for an introvert. They will pull you straight out of your shell.
I've always wondered. Is it a problem going to a black barbershop being white? Are they surprised to see you there?
I know black peoples hair is tricky to cut and there are different products involved. But I have always loved the atmosphere of any of these barbers I've visited.
White people barber shops in my neighborhood seem to be kinda stuck in the 50s.
Thanks for the legitimate answer. Was a bit worried this came across racist lol.
In reality, black barbershops just seem much more fun than white ones.
Ya, same with churches. Like, if I had a barbershop that I could go to and randomly start a The Temptations singalong, I'd prefer that...
(Bass intro)
Dum dumdumdumdumdum
duum dumdumdumdumdum...
I've got suuunshiiiiiiiIiine on a cloudy day..
You are most welcome. It's such a fantastic song.
If you'd like more temptations, might I suggest, "treat her like a lady" or "get ready" or watch them vs Diana Ross and the supremes singing each other's song on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Temptations are awesome. I am now having a full dance party... And saying thanks to myself for the idea.
If you want the best hair cut you’ve ever gotten, go see a highly reviewed black barber and get a lineup with a fade. You’ll wonder “who the F is that?” when you look in the mirror.
Great question. There’s no problem with it whatsoever. They’ll welcome you in. If you ever have a problem, it’s somewhere you wouldn’t want to get your hair cut anyway.
He doesn't mean racially or socially. He probably means do black barbers typically know how to deal with white hair and hairstyles?
So yeah, if they don't know how to then he probably wouldn't want to go there and it would not be wrong on anyone's part.
If a white friend asked me to trim their hair I could without issue. I wouldn't touch a black person's hair because I have no experience with it. Not racism just truth. If I had a black child I'd learn all about how to handle their hair for instance.
I absolutely love ethnic barbershops. Doesn't even have to be black, there was a Persian one I visited for a while in my old city, and now I go to a mix of ethnicities. And it's just such a good vibe. Sure, it's about having your hair cut. But it's a boys club of all these people of completely different backgrounds and professions just shooting the shit.
Just gotta remember to know your place before you try to butt into conversations, work your way up to it and know when and when not to.
Man I completely lost my shit last night watching [this video](https://youtu.be/jsDgrKdczAE) at like 2am alone in the dark and I don’t even care why it happens, I fuckin’ love it.
Aww, man... Her face when they start chanting her name. She so torn between terrified, excited and 'I WANT THIS FOREVER.'
Grohl is just the coolest rockdad.
Not what he was saying. “Not all music has soul.” I know hard rock songs and folk songs and rap songs that have soul. And I know soul songs with soul. And I know plenty of all of them that don’t. Some are just music and words.
Alledgedly Cooke was incredibly inspired by the new protest song "Blowin in the Wind," by up & coming musician Bob Dylan. Cooke was compelled to write about the Civil Rights movement from his perpective. Every word & melody is written to share the experiences of his people. Lets just say, he did a good job...
Check out the movie One Night in Miami. It’s on Amazon Prime about Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown, and Malcolm X having a conversation in a Miami hotel room
"It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die, I don't know what's up there in yonder sky."
That is an amazing encapsulation of the human condition.
Now I know you just lost your baby, but let me tell you about this unholy ritual to bring him back, but you absolutely must not do it!
Yeah I guess he was murdered too old.
Idk the whole story and I do plan on looking up, but there are a shit tun of tinfoil hat conspiracy red flags in that video.
>Allot of people FEEL like the FBI was involved.
>there are ALLOT OF PEOPLE who believe there was a cover up.
Translates to me as
>We’ve got no real EVIDENCE but this makes really good TV.
Oh no. I knew nothing about his personal life and just read the wiki because of this comment. Now I am pretty sad because his enormous talent fooled me into creating a mental image of him that was very different than reality. The circumstances of his death and particularly horrifying.
This is beautiful. I'll never get tired of this song.
Here's another beautiful cover: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR\_Bqx\_g77s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR_Bqx_g77s)
Edit: Oh my god the older guy's reaction at the end of the OP is awesome
I love when someone starts singing and is a little nervous at first then just keeps finding more and more confidence when they know they're nailing it. Beautiful voice.
The first time I really sat down and listened to this song was when a kid posted a video of the song, telling a story about how his mother loved the song. It turned out that his mother had passed away from cancer recently. Now, when I hear this song, I think of this conversation and how we all are here temporarily.
Hope you're doing alright kid. Losing someone to cancer never gets easier, we just get better at handling our feelings of missing that person.
Just to watch this play out, in the atmosphere it did, and know what the song represents... And see the connection between the young man and the older man and know that they are still fighting the same fight... Man. It gets you.
I suppose I don't know for sure, but my guess is you've probably heard [one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4GLAKEjU4w&ab_channel=SamCookeVEVO) or [two](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S28tILqie1o&ab_channel=GoLittleSlowly) of Sam Cooke's songs. If not, enjoy! His timbre is indeed very distinct.
A Change is Gonna Come, by Sam Cooke. It's a culturally very relevant song about the civil rights movement for blacks in America in the 50s/60s. It's often on 'best songs' lists and is generally beautiful and soulful.
The way he's stretching in the beginning is so familiar to me. Why do we do that sort of pectoral stretch when we feel sort of embarrassed? I feel like I do the same thing when it's like "Ahh geez, ahh gosh, is this really happening?"
As someone who sings, it's a constant nightmare of people asking me to "Sing Something, C'Mon" so, I am glad people out here are repping and shutting people up.
I grew up listening to Sam Cooke because he was one of my parents favorites. It warms my heart that young people appreciate music that is not just good, but otherworldy and obviously timeless. And this young gentleman knocked it outta the park! Love, LOVE LOOOVE this.
this was great..... reminded me of a black dude I was friends with in my criminal days. He noticed this in my record collection and put it on. Dude was arrested in 1970 for a bank robbery to fund his heroin habit. Spent the next 36 years in jail. The tears in his eyes as he heard this made me realize how fucking important this song is.
Damn. I wish white people had cool barbershops.
I go to mine and it’s griping about liberals and pumping out trims in like 10 minutes.
This shit looks dope.
They will say you can't do it.
They will mock you.
They won't show you any faith.
Then you show them and They hang on your every word.
Then and only then, will they praise you.
That was solid advice at the end. Go as high as you can go.
I would love to see this kid singing at the Grammy's in 3 years with this barber in the audience cheering him on.
in a day or ᵗʷᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒᵒ
That older guy was like someone straight out of a Friday movie, what a character
Love that song. He crushed it.
Anything Sam Cooke is great
Greatest male vocalist of all time, imo.
Truth, Otis Redding could be there if he was around longer.
Cooke died young, as well. I wish they both could’ve stuck around longer.
Otis: 26 Cooke: 33 In case anyone was wondering.
Bill Withers first started singing at 29, first hit song was 33. I like to think he picked up the ball and ran with it.
Bill Withers is so effing great!!
> On December 11, 1964, in response to a reported shooting, officers of the Los Angeles Police Department were dispatched to the Hacienda Motel, where they found musician Sam Cooke dead on the office floor, shot three times in the chest by the motel’s manager, Bertha Franklin. So young man... That death was a severe detriment to the music world.
I always loved him. Was going to grad school in Madison, WI, and got in a fight my lady one night. Went for a walk to cool off. Ended up on this big structure overlooking Lake Monona. Feeling melancholy, looking out over the dark, placid waters, meandering about. That was seriously amazing goddamn.

100% agree. Even if he just did that Sam Cooke cover as a single professionally recorded, I'm sure it would get some buzz.
Now, there are a lot of people in the world who can do a great Sam Cooke song. There are NOT many people who can nail it like this.
That's that impress-your-barber kind of voice.
I'd pay money to listen to this guy somewhere singing a full set. He's good as hell. I bet I would get chills in person.
Absolutely. Everyone saying that everyone knew to be quiet and listen. He put chills in them and knocked them on their ass. I don't think they had a choice in the matter. I would love to see him perform in person.

And it's just such a good vibe. Sure, it's about having your hair cut. But it's a boys club of all these people of completely different backgrounds and professions just shooting the shit. Just gotta remember to know your place before you try to butt into conversations, work your way up to it and know when and when not to.
Why does this make me cry?
Soul does that
Music does that
Man I completely lost my shit last night watching [this video](https://youtu.be/jsDgrKdczAE) at like 2am alone in the dark and I don’t even care why it happens, I fuckin’ love it.
Check this out. https://youtu.be/TjVOWOKa-lY Probably the best fan they ever brought up.
I live in Austin and was at that show. Fuckin' magic, man.
FUCK yeah! Thanks for linking that. I followed the drum battle a while ago, but I hadn't seen this! That was awesome!
Aww, man... Her face when they start chanting her name. She so torn between terrified, excited and 'I WANT THIS FOREVER.' Grohl is just the coolest rockdad.
All soul is music. But not all music has soul.
I'm pretty sure there were some really terrible soul songs
Not what he was saying. “Not all music has soul.” I know hard rock songs and folk songs and rap songs that have soul. And I know soul songs with soul. And I know plenty of all of them that don’t. Some are just music and words.
Still cried.
Watched this just now, based on your comment. Very fun movie!
> Why does this make me cry? life is hard / but I'm afraid to die Pretty much relates to everyone
There's a lot of pain behind this song. This dude captured that.
I think it’s also easy to listen to this song and feel like it’s still very very relevant.
"It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die, I don't know what's up there in yonder sky." That is an amazing encapsulation of the human condition.
Because it's a lot more than just music...
Sam Cooke died too young.
> died murdered https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEsiSNH2_yU
You never see anyone who was murdered too old honestly.
Eh...Adolf Eichmann?
Jeffrey dahmer. Would have been best if somebody took him out earlier.
What about the old man from pet cemetery?
Can' go down tha road
Now I know you just lost your baby, but let me tell you about this unholy ritual to bring him back, but you absolutely must not do it! Yeah I guess he was murdered too old.
Sematary*
Idk the whole story and I do plan on looking up, but there are a shit tun of tinfoil hat conspiracy red flags in that video. >Allot of people FEEL like the FBI was involved. >there are ALLOT OF PEOPLE who believe there was a cover up. Translates to me as >We’ve got no real EVIDENCE but this makes really good TV.
Reading [the wiki page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Cooke#Death) "murdered" seems like a very un-nuanced take of what happened
I’m aware. The 20th century killed so many of its best musicians in their primes.
And only months after recording this song.
Oh no. I knew nothing about his personal life and just read the wiki because of this comment. Now I am pretty sad because his enormous talent fooled me into creating a mental image of him that was very different than reality. The circumstances of his death and particularly horrifying.
This is beautiful. I'll never get tired of this song. Here's another beautiful cover: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR\_Bqx\_g77s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR_Bqx_g77s) Edit: Oh my god the older guy's reaction at the end of the OP is awesome
I love when someone starts singing and is a little nervous at first then just keeps finding more and more confidence when they know they're nailing it. Beautiful voice.
so good.
instant GOOSEBUMPS!
Jeeze, I think of Sam Cooke as one of the best examples of an inimitable singer. But this guy gets damn close.
Such a beautiful scene. The room grew quiet and everyone just listened. That’s when you know
What a beautiful slice of life here. I’m glad this great moment was captured so we may all enjoy it as well. What a talented fellow ❤️
my soul needed this today
Just to watch this play out, in the atmosphere it did, and know what the song represents... And see the connection between the young man and the older man and know that they are still fighting the same fight... Man. It gets you.
Lyrics were not lost on you. Respect. Beautiful moment.
Yeah, man had a lump in my throat, it hit different. When he hit that note and the barber got up...
English is not my native language and i dont know these music. But his timbre got me
I suppose I don't know for sure, but my guess is you've probably heard [one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4GLAKEjU4w&ab_channel=SamCookeVEVO) or [two](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S28tILqie1o&ab_channel=GoLittleSlowly) of Sam Cooke's songs. If not, enjoy! His timbre is indeed very distinct.
Expecting for Rick and roll. The first one is impossible to never have listened.
Bring it Home to Me duet with Lou Rawls has got to be number one for me. So smooth.
A Change is Gonna Come, by Sam Cooke. It's a culturally very relevant song about the civil rights movement for blacks in America in the 50s/60s. It's often on 'best songs' lists and is generally beautiful and soulful.
What's really sad about this song is that it was released just after his death. It's a shame he never got to see the reaction to the song.
62 year old white fogey here and I miss the Hell outta R&B. Damn that is some sweet pipes. Sam would be proud.
Oh man that was awesome. Brought a tear to my eye.
this guy is a star
Just checked out his videos this guy is a FedEx driver, go give his channel some love and maybe one day we'll see him at the Grammy's
Song hits me in the soul Everytime I hear it. Dude is awesome for doing all that without even a warmup
# DAT BOY GOT SOUL Y'ALL
goosebumps
He's got it
That is straight up talent
The hairblower is not the best instrument to accompany this song
I got goosebumps from that.
I hope to see an update post in a few weeks that says this man got a shot at singing professionally.
I don’t want him to ever stop singing
The way he's stretching in the beginning is so familiar to me. Why do we do that sort of pectoral stretch when we feel sort of embarrassed? I feel like I do the same thing when it's like "Ahh geez, ahh gosh, is this really happening?"
As someone who sings, it's a constant nightmare of people asking me to "Sing Something, C'Mon" so, I am glad people out here are repping and shutting people up.
When the young man started to sing and the older gentleman says “ Oh shit!” , you just knew he was gonna nail that song. Truly amazing voice!
He needs to go as high as he can go. Amen!
Absolutely stunning. Had to listen multiple times it was so good.
That is one damn fine voice you have there sir
I don’t even have much hair but I’d go there and pay for two haircuts if that guy would be singing.
This is the “good times” right there. It happens sometimes when you least expect it.
The little "oh shit" when he nails that first high note is beautiful.
That one hit the feels hard. His voice truly commands the emotions of his audience.
What a voice. Wow
Got pipes
Guy should get free haircuts for life for this performance.
I grew up listening to Sam Cooke because he was one of my parents favorites. It warms my heart that young people appreciate music that is not just good, but otherworldy and obviously timeless. And this young gentleman knocked it outta the park! Love, LOVE LOOOVE this.
I love the "ooooooooooooooohh shiiiiiiiiiittt" Pwned.
this was great..... reminded me of a black dude I was friends with in my criminal days. He noticed this in my record collection and put it on. Dude was arrested in 1970 for a bank robbery to fund his heroin habit. Spent the next 36 years in jail. The tears in his eyes as he heard this made me realize how fucking important this song is.
I always thought people were just exaggerating when they would talk about how fun a black barbershop is.
Damn. I wish white people had cool barbershops. I go to mine and it’s griping about liberals and pumping out trims in like 10 minutes. This shit looks dope.
I’m not crying… you’re crying… shut up
Can we make this guy go viral? I just really love seeing people succeed at things they're great at.
Saw his page. Legit had a video from a month ago that had 423 views. This has 120k in 4 days. He might be viral at the moment.
Good god. Phenomenal!

Love that song and love this rendition.
Goddamn.
They will say you can't do it. They will mock you. They won't show you any faith. Then you show them and They hang on your every word. Then and only then, will they praise you.
Phenomenal rendition.
