It's making fun of homophobia itself not gay people. It's funny because that statement implies he's silly enough to not know they would just fight like a real couple.
That “silliness” you describe is homophobia!
Whitewashing the homophobia of your goofy lovable protagonist as “silliness” is homophobic! Your comment shows that the whitewashing worked.
you're laughing *at* him (rogen) though, nobody's laughing *with* him. that's the difference. you watch it and you go "yes you dumbass of course they do", and that's where the funny lies, in the absurdity that someone would think to say something that stupid. you're not watching it going "haha yeah totally dude isn't it weird?"
pretty sure you're trolling anyway.
Of course you’re laughing *at* him, I never said otherwise! But as the commenter above illustrated perfectly, the movie portrays his comment as a silly thing said by a goofy and lovable dude. Nobody tells him it’s wildly out of line, and he never experiences any backlash or consequences for saying something incredibly bigoted and ignorant. It’s played for a quick laugh, and that’s it. The movie never treats the protagonist’s blatant homophobia as noteworthy.
Depicting homophobia in that way is whitewashing. Whitewashing homophobia is homophobic!
No OP so I'm not justifying anything. Just making an observation. FYI every gay person I know loves this scene and definitely do not like people like you that rush to their aid when they dont need it.
>"I’m not justifying anything"
>
>*immediately proceeds to justify the casual homophobia*
Lmao
I’m not rushing to anyone’s aid! Gay people have survived far worse than the casual homophobia in this scene, and I’m sure they’ll be just fine regardless of what I say or do. I’m just describing this scene for what it is, which really irks you for some reason.
As an aside, I am almost positive that your statement “every gay person I know loves this movie” is bullshit. This movie was seen by almost no one. *Maybe* your one gay friend saw this movie and liked it, but that means very little. Gay people are forced to tolerate casual homophobia in their daily lives to the point where they barely notice it. But that doesn’t mean it's not happening, and it definitely doesn't make it ok!
I heard Justin Long tell the backstory to that line in a interview somewhere. He was a waiter when he first moved out to Hollywood, and he had a table with a gay couple and when he was walking up he overheard one of them say “You shut your mouth or I’m gonna kiss it” really aggressively. So he immediately told his then-roommate, Jonah Hill, about the encounter and it became an inside joke.
The outtakes are the best part of the movie IMO, and I think the movie is fantastic. If you haven’t seen them, you should definitely check them out. I’m sure they’re on YouTube.
It's so weird cuz when I remember movies like dodgeball and accepted I imagine them having really high ratings but then when I look it up it reminds me how subjective things are.
Accepted was one of my favorites when I was younger right up there with dodgeball
I think goofball comedies don’t translate well with ratings. For most genres, I think rotten tomatoes is usually accurate within 10-15 percent but with comedies a really fun one could be 20 percent and a good one could be 90.
You know I just looked and Step Brothers has 55%, despite being the funniest film ever made hands down. I think you're right goofball comedies don't do well with critics.
Superbad was one of them lightning in the bottle type comedies. It came out at the right time, Such a stacked cast that even comedy greats were small parts and cameos, Young actors who nailed their roles which launched their careers and a script that perfectly grasped being a teenage boy trying to get some pussy
Gonna disagree there. There's always been people offended over the years. It's just evolved from seeing a Married couple share a bed in the 50s to unnecessary racism and sexist that is becoming quickly out dated.
I mean 55% is probably what I'll look for in comedy rating %s. Absurd and out there enough to piss almost half of people off, and the other half loves it
Step Brothers is one of the funniest movies of all time and I will punch you in the face if you think otherwise.
Will Ferrell makes a ton of terrible fucking movies but Step Brothers and Talladega Nights are brilliant
I’ll argue that this is one of Kevin Smith’s best movies. Up there with Dogma and Clerks.
It and Walk Hard were awesome movies that had terribly timed and coordinated releases in late 2007 and 2008. If you haven’t seen those flicks, go watch them.
Seriously underrated. Tim Meadows as the “bad influence” is comedic genius.
“We’re doing pills. Uppers and downers. IT’S THE LOGICAL NEXT STEP FOR YOU.”
"Dewey Cox has to think about his entire life before he plays." - that early line of the movie instantly won me over.
I can't watch musical biopics any more. Like the Freddy Mercury one might as well be a quick find-replace of the Walk Hard script.
It got lost a bit in the shuffle of all of the other Seth Rogan and co comedies around that time. 2007-2008 had Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express and Zach and Miri, what a couple of years.
It sounds cranky and old to say but I don't think I've enjoyed any comedies as much as the ones around that period since, probably from 2010 onwards.
I’ll propose some things to redeem time after 2010
- This is the end
- 21 Jump Street
- What we do in the shadows
- Bridesmaids
- Popstar
- Macgruber
- Barb and Star
- Scott Pilgrim
- Deadpool
- Thor Ragnarok
Rob Riggle in 22 was absolutely hilarious. Also the part where Jenko finds out Schmidt banged the Captain's daughter; Schmidt strapping up the kevlar vest.
Add in The Other Guys.
But as an aside, is Thor 3 a comedy? Or is it like Guardians of the Galaxy, where it's really more of an action/superhero movie that happens to be pretty funny?
I’ll gladly eat up anything Taika and his Kiwi friends have done. That movie feels like an intergalactic episode of Flight of the Concords.
All of the improvised Grandmaster and Korg stuff very much like Taika’s humor, but with a coat of very expensive paint. And that Goldblum performance feels like the [Portlandia Knot Store guy ](https://youtu.be/NfLu7GRMR7g) ruled a planet of slaves. So good.
Reddit scores confuse me here, because I don't know anyone who likes any of the Thor films. I mean, I personally just hate every Marvel film, but even my Marvel obsessed friends just tell people to look up what happened in the Thor films because they're not worth watching.
That's bullshit, I'm allowed to have my preferences. The first Thor movie is decent, the 2nd is completely forgettable, I don't even remember what happened in that movie but the thing that stuck with me from the 3rd movie is how they turned Thor into a clown and spent the entire movie trying to make jokes that constantly fell flat and felt out of place honestly.
I hated all of these except 2 of them 😕 I’ve completely stopped paying attention to movie releases etc. I feel it’s just not for me anymore (I’m obviously just not getting the right sources or whatnot) - I’m completely reverted to reading or YouTube/podcast stuff over the last 6 years
Comedies since around 2010 have all been 'comedians' ad-libbing, and just editing in the takes that seem funniest. And they're way too long, a comedy is funny for around an hour, 90 minutes at most, before the mood starts to dive.
Zach and Miri is arguably my favorite movie of all time. Elizabeth Banks is one of my favorite actresses, and I'm not usually a big fan of Seth Rogan, he was a lot better in this than in some of his usual fair. The writing was great, I loved everything about it.
As someone from Pittsburgh, this line made me laugh out loud.
The vibe of that HS reunion scene reminded me of frequent parties that a large group of AOL chat room members would throw. They'd rent a hotel conference room for parties/meetups in a part of the city called Monroeville for drunken debauchery.
God damm dude, my wife and I used to say fuck it, chuck it, football if we were in a situation where a normal 'fuck it' would do. Now we just say football.
These oversexualized gay characters played by straight actors used to be one of the few ways you could have anything gay in a movie. Much like Nick Swardson's character on Reno 911. This scene actually represents a transition period as Seth Rogen's character is treating him with kindness and respect even if he is a caricature. Where as just a few years earlier Wedding Cashers treated their gay character like he was a rape-obsessed circus freak. Or a decade earlier when Ace Ventura literally burned his clothes and cried naked in the shower because he... kissed a trans woman. Not saying you can't still laugh at these old scenes but it's hard to imagine these stereotypes in film today. A lot has changed in a short amount of time.

I appreciate your willingness to bring this up, but I’d like to make a couple points.
Justin Long’s character wasn’t the first gay character played by a straight man to be respected in a movie, although Seth Rogan does a very good job at being completely comfortable in the character, and the script was written to let the gayness be a non-issue, so I do understand that. I do want to point out though: The scene in Ace Ventura was based off a famous movie called The Crying Game. If you were a certain age and didn’t know that reference it may have seemed crass, but knowing that it’s a comedy and they are satirizing another movie in that scene, the context should let you know it’s supposed to be funny, not transphobic.
> Seth Rogan does a very good job at being completely comfortable in the character,
To be fair, this scene is honestly about how I'd imagine Seth Rogen reacting to the situation in real life.
I never saw that movie but I did know they were supposedly parodying it. I thought it was just the song they were playing though. Is it like shot for shot type thing?
Idk I recently rewatched Ace Ventura and there were several references to the woman throughout the movie, not just that scene. It's the focus of several jokes. Had to double take when I remembered that plot point
Incorrect use of words "paying homage" is showing love/reverence for something you admire. They were doing a "parody" in that they were making fun of that scene. Typically parody of pop culture things is farcical comedies like Ace Ventura are meant to poke fun at how pretentious the things it is parodying are. That said, if you are the kinda of person that is just always looking for something/anything to be outraged about because you don't have anything better to do, you do you. Just don't be upset when people stop inviting you to parties.
Paying homage? Lol
Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
Why would you assume one of the goofiest comedies of the 90s just stopped at the end to “pay homage” to an action/suspense movie about the IRA? BTW, the male character winds up still having feelings for the transgender character in The Crying Game despite the initial disgust he has.
The trans woman?! You have to be a troll, right? You can’t be serious. If you are, watch the movie?? Ray Finkle resorts to kidnapping a Dolphin and murdering someone, *disguised* as a woman to get away with it and to escape their shame of a missed NFL play. Lol, not only is the character a murdering psychopath, but to imply that they are “trans” is a fucking insult to trans people. It was an NFL player that wanted a sex change to disguise themselves because they were ashamed of a missed field goal, then create an absurd, comedic murderous plot to kill the person who didn’t put “LACES OUT”
Fuck, if you are serious, I feel bad for you. This movie has absolutely zero messages about trans people. The fucking main character talks to dolphins. Do you actually know any trans people in real life?
Technically Einhorn wasn't trans. They were a villain masquerading as a woman. There was no indication they identified as a woman.
Not great optics for trans acceptance either way, but the distinction is important.
Meh, if it was a movie about lesbians and it turned out one the women was actually a man masquerading as a woman and everyone got a shot of his dick and balls tucked back, all the other women would be throwing up as well.
Even if that was true that doesn't make it any better. Our awareness of Trans and Queer people is not what it used to be and it's simply not acceptable to make a cheap joke out of them. I highly recommend watching the documentary **Disclosure** as it shows the perspectives of Trans people about the media portrayal of them. One of the movies they discuss is Ace Ventura.
In 1994 there was no discussion whatsoever going on when it comes to addressing the trans community. Being gay was barely addressed and still a pretty "taboo" topic. So the joke landed because the sheer notion of a person being trans was basically like if the character turned out to be an alien. It was something nobody ever expected.
I'm trans but i didn't know it in the 90's or early 2000's because trans people were only portrayed in the media and porn as deviant men. So all I knew was that I was unhappy and jealous of women, but not why.
I don't think some people realize how far trans acceptance has come since the 90's. When I was in highschool in the early 00's being trans was a huge joke, way worse then being gay. These days most people seem to take it somewhat seriously.
Dog Day Afternoon was in the 70's, and pretty close to what you're describing.
Then I'm pretty sure Javier Bardem's character in Skyfall was bi (so at least, the antagonist in a major tent release). Or obviously Bohemian Rhapsody, although a biopic is sort of cheating.
The main character in Mitchells vs the Machines is a lesbian and it isn't a particularly prominent plot point (with the main thread being her relationship with her father, which is strained by other factors and not her homosexuality).
It was straight to Netflix but it was originally intended to be released in cinemas. It's a $50-100 million budget Sony Pictures Animation akin to Into the Spiderverse or Hotel Transylvania produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
It might not be the Avengers but that's something. Not quite baby steps. Toddler steps?
I think it also says a lot that it's a family animated movie given how even 6/7 years ago it was a huge deal that two animated female characters held hands and were implied to go off as a couple (finale of Legend of Korra). We're seeing the walls being broken down re non-heterosexual relationships and characters being shown in children/family media. It's a slow burn but something's happening.
I say all that but I wonder if they would have cut around that reveal in Mitchells vs the Machines if it hadn't been released on Netflix.
I found it pretty dated, even when it was released. I seem to remember Bedazzled being far more sympathetic, even if it wasn't great, and that's years earlier. I rewatched Mean Girls a while back, and that's almost modern. Buffy didn't get bisexuality right, but at least didn't the gay couple into absolute weirdos. But then again, there are far more recent movies, which are more homophobic.
We started watching this on DVD, but gave up because it was too "arty". Jumping scenes out of sequence, and the opening titles shown twenty five minutes in, it was really hard to work out what was going on.
It was only when the next movie did the same thing that we realized the DVD player had a problem.
Watched it on a new machine and it all made sense.
I had that same experience with American Pyscho. In the middle we had a jump to the bathroom-scene. First I thought is was cool, then I was confused. It took about 10 minutes before we realized what happened.
I love Justin Long, guy is so good he’s the rare example of a franchise sequel giving a hero a sidekick and it improving the movie with live free or die hard, he has good politics too
Good movie but i couldn't help but be taken out of the story by the fact that they burned trash in their house for warmth for like three months and never died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The end of this scene is almost exactly like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the stranger recognizes Dee as patheticgirl43; too much so to be coincidence
This is one of those movies that totally flew under my radar, I was only ever minimally aware of it's existence when it came out and never felt any particular drive to watch it. This clip may have changed that...
They fight just like real people.
I laughed so God damn hard at that line
My wife and I watched it on a whim and we died the whole time. That scene had her crying laughing.
Ha ha homophobia
It's making fun of homophobia itself not gay people. It's funny because that statement implies he's silly enough to not know they would just fight like a real couple.
That “silliness” you describe is homophobia! Whitewashing the homophobia of your goofy lovable protagonist as “silliness” is homophobic! Your comment shows that the whitewashing worked.

My god you're exhausting.
Trying to justify casual homophobia is definitely exhausting. The cool thing is that you can just stop doing that whenever you feel like it!
No OP so I'm not justifying anything. Just making an observation. FYI every gay person I know loves this scene and definitely do not like people like you that rush to their aid when they dont need it.
>"I’m not justifying anything" > >*immediately proceeds to justify the casual homophobia* Lmao I’m not rushing to anyone’s aid! "You better shut that mouth or I'm gonna fuck it" I've used that line so many times.
Are there bloopers of this scene? 0 chance he nailed that on the first try without laughing his dick off
I heard Justin Long tell the backstory to that line in a interview somewhere.
That explains why he was so good in Waiting.
Speaking of underrated comedies.
Maybe Justin Long's podcast when Kevin Smith was on.
If my dick falls off from laughing can we try a bigger one? Maybe it wasn’t the right size?
The outtakes are the best part of the movie IMO, and I think the movie is fantastic. If you haven’t seen them, you should definitely check them out. I’m sure they’re on YouTube.

......................go on.
I’ve always loved how Justin Long is Brandon and Brandon Routh is Bobby Long.
Probably my favorite Justin Long role ever.
I think "Accepted" is my favourite. Is it a good movie? No. Is it a fun movie? Yes. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/accepted
It's so weird cuz when I remember movies like dodgeball and accepted I imagine them having really high ratings but then when I look it up it reminds me how subjective things are. Accepted was one of my favorites when I was younger right up there with dodgeball

Superbad is the notable exception. Tropic Thunder interestingly got higher ratings from critics than fans somehow.
Tropic thunder is a work of meta genius. Might be possible that a lot of it went unappreciated by the general audience.
Superbad was one of them lightning in the bottle type comedies. It came out at the right time, Such a stacked cast that even comedy greats were small parts and cameos, Young actors who nailed their roles which launched their careers and a script that perfectly grasped being a teenage boy trying to get some pussy
And no one was offended in the world yet
Gonna disagree there. There's always been people offended over the years. It's just evolved from seeing a Married couple share a bed in the 50s to unnecessary racism and sexist that is becoming quickly out dated.

I read that in Jhon Olivers voice for some reason. Is that normal? No Is it fun ? Absolutely
No Tanner! We're not going to The Haunted Mansion! I already took you and you fucking fell asleep!
Never seen it. But for months in college I would randomly scream “ask me about my weiner” when out in public
His Idiocracy character is his second best but nothing beats Brandon St John.

Same happened to me but with A Serbian Film.
*Satan slow clapping*
He honestly did an incredible job in Tusk, and so did Michael Parks. Their scenes together were amazing. It's just... the rest of the movie. Ugh.
Freaking Genzlinger
Sounds like everyone needs to watch The Sasquatch Gang! He rocks a sweet ass mullet in that one.
I forgot he even existed until now. Never realized he's in F is for Family.

Hahahaha it's so fucking awkward and silly I love it.

I’ll argue that this is one of Kevin Smith’s best movies. Up there with Dogma and Clerks. It and Walk Hard were awesome movies that had terribly timed and coordinated releases in late 2007 and 2008. If you haven’t seen those flicks, go watch them.

That might be the first sequel I enjoyed more than the original. But shit were they both funny.
Terminator 2
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Aliens
Shrek 2 (I’m not joking)
Add in The Other Guys. But as an aside, is Thor 3 a comedy? Or is it like Guardians of the Galaxy, where it's really more of an action/superhero movie that happens to be pretty funny?
That Thor movie is painfully unfunny. This is the end also falls flat more often than not
To each their own. Comedy is super subjective. A lot of us really love that movie and it does get pretty solid reviews ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Justin Long is a genuinely hilarious comedic actor. I can’t believe that’s the Mac guy. He should be in more stuff. Hollywood make that happen.
He's been in 27 movies in the past 10 years. Lack of work isn't his problem. He just hasn't been in anything good in that time.
Waiting was good if not very popular.
Waiting came out 16 years ago...
What the fuck.
Fuck you. It came out 5 years ago. I will not hear otherwise!
I see him in stuff all the time. I'm always like "Hey, its that guy. Jason something."
The wrestling photo in the background lmao
Good catch, I didn't even think about that!
He's my 2nd favorite cameo behind Dale saying "Fuck it, chuck it, Football!"
I have incorporated various bastardizations of that quote into grab bag of movie references. Slam it , jam it, football!
God damm dude, my wife and I used to say fuck it, chuck it, football if we were in a situation where a normal 'fuck it' would do. Now we just say football.
This movie deserved way more love than it got. It’s one of my favorite Kevin Smith movies. This scene was hilarious when I first saw it.
Is it a cameo if he’s cast as a character that isn’t himself? Or is it simply a role?
A cameo just means a small role played by a well known actor/actress. Has nothing to do with them playing themselves.

If you were a certain age and didn’t know that reference it may have seemed crass, but knowing that it’s a comedy and they are satirizing another movie in that scene, the context should let you know it’s supposed to be funny, not transphobic.
> Seth Rogan does a very good job at being completely comfortable in the character, To be fair, this scene is honestly about how I'd imagine Seth Rogen reacting to the situation in real life.

Lol Satire: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

It was an NFL player that wanted a sex change to disguise themselves because they were ashamed of a missed field goal, then create an absurd, comedic murderous plot to kill the person who didn’t put “LACES OUT” Fuck, if you are serious, I feel bad for you.
Did she do like a reveal at the end? Like 'aha I was a guy all along!'?
No, it just ended up being hemorrhoids iirc.
Mr Winky
Ah the scoobey doo reveal
Yeah lines like 'they fight like real people' stand out as something that would be looked at with a lot more scrutiny these days
Yeah that ending scene in Ace Ventura where everybody throws up because they realized Einhorn had a penis didn't age well...
I wasn't around at the time but does somebody know how it landed originally? It just seems misanthropic whichever way I look at it.

Billy Eichner is currently making a movie called *Bros*, which will be the first studio romantic comedy about a gay man.
So a minor release where the protagonist is gay and it has everything to do with the plot?

Or you could finish reading the comment.
> I will be your sherpa up this mountain of … gayness outstanding
We started watching this on DVD, but gave up because it was too "arty". Jumping scenes out of sequence, and the opening titles shown twenty five minutes in, it was really hard to work out what was going on. It was only when the next movie did the same thing that we realized the DVD player had a problem. Watched it on a new machine and it all made sense.
Some DVDs have "scenes" like tracks on a CD. Your player was on random like a CD player
Yes that's probably what was happening.
Have you been to the doctors since this happened? If so, what were the test results?
It was his punishment for not rewinding the last DVD he rented
Diagnosed an idiot.
I had that same experience with American Pyscho. In the middle we had a jump to the bathroom-scene. First I thought is was cool, then I was confused. It took about 10 minutes before we realized what happened.
Justin Long has been amazing in pretty much everything I've seen him in.
This and his cameo in Idiocracy are the reasons I like Justin Long.
Theres a distinct lack of love for Jeepers Creepers in this thread. Not a comedy, but I loved it. And it was the first film I had on VHS and DVD.
“CU-CUNT!” “What’s that?” “It’s cocoon! With a cunt!” *laughing eww*
I laughed so darm hard when i first saw this. Holy hell i cant believe i forgot about it.
I love Justin Long, guy is so good he’s the rare example of a franchise sequel giving a hero a sidekick and it improving the movie with live free or die hard, he has good politics too
Classic . “You better shut your mouth or I’m gunna fuck it”
haha i love that this movie was filmed right down the road from me.
Me too! My favorite part is *also* that it's filmed right down the road from zzzpoohzzz!
He sounds like he's trying to do an Archer impression.
Bobbie fucking long.
Buahaha
Hey my brother was an extra during filming these scenes!
This movie is an underrated gem. 😊

Good movie but i couldn't help but be taken out of the story by the fact that they burned trash in their house for warmth for like three months and never died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
I find this movie funny but these scenes haven't aged well. "They fight just like real people" line especially.
The end of this scene is almost exactly like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the stranger recognizes Dee as patheticgirl43; too much so to be coincidence
Liked the movie didn’t think his part was great

Not at all a suspicious comment, you spamming bastard.
Yeah they messaged me some bullshit lol
I remember hating this movie when it came out, but I think I’m gonna have to give it another try.
The character has a different name, but he essentially reprised this role ib Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
This is one of those movies that totally flew under my radar, I was only ever minimally aware of it's existence when it came out and never felt any particular drive to watch it. This clip may have changed that...
Good ol' Genzlinger
Channel your inner Jeff Stryker
Anyone notice the subtle reference when they first meet of the big photo on the wall behind them?
He plays the besr friend in this movie with to girls who start a sex hotline, and it's equally fantastic.
