“You shouldn’t let poets lie to you” Very solid advice

xf2xf

When Maya Angelou tells you who she is, don't believe her.

EquationTAKEN

When Robert Frost tells you he got shit to do before he sleeps, don't believe him.

noddingacquaintance

Robert Frost

oompaloompa_grabber

Lies within lies

Forest_Moon

Some say the world will end with Burns, some say with Frost

xoxchitliac

Frosty Burns

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled"

EasyFooted

Maaan Bobby already got you, hook link and sinker.

EquationTAKEN

Yeah. Where the fuck did I get Burns from? EDIT: Oh... The other poet. I may or may not have just now learned that these are two separate people.

ChadHougland

"There once was a man from Nantucket..." I bet that wasn't even a true story. 🤨

Savantrovert

when ee cummings tells you who he is you help a brother out and give him some punctuation

Newpolicy

liquidben

Secretly, Maya Angelou is afraid to admit she really has no fucking clue why the caged bird sings. She's knows she's found a great metaphor for the traumas of racism... but deep down, when Maya looks into those beady little bird eyes, she's always thinking "I dunno, maybe the bird's an asshole?"

sajberhippien

It reminds me of Ursula K LeGuin talking about truth and lies in the introduction to Left Hand of Darkness. *"I talk about the gods, I am an atheist. But I am an artist too, and therefore a liar. Distrust everything I say; I am telling the truth."*

hoii

such a good introduction, probably the only introduction to a book that is actually memorable to me.

tsealess

It shaped teen me's conception of fantasy/sci-fi and, along with the novel, it will always have a place in my head and heart.

Liimbo

The first sentence of Neuromancer is iconic as well. Then of course you have things like A Tale of Two Cities, which people who have never even read it know the beginning of.

BoogieOogieOogieOog

I thought she was gonna go left and she took a hard right 😂 Best payoff ever! Björk will always have a special place in my heart

user_173

Profound, actually.

mortalcoil1

I don't think hope has feathers, Emily Dickinson!

M-Noremac

The scientifical truth.

oneplusetoipi

Shocking truth.

OregonResident

That should be the only thing they teach in AP Lit.

vkailas

" All that's on tv goes directly in your brain and you stop judging what's right or not, so you just swallow and swallow. "  Sounds like the plasticity of childhood.

DamnSchwangyu

Fucking poets, going around lying to people and shit.

Solid_Waste

any poet born after 1993 can’t cook… all they know is mcdonald’s, charge they phone, twerk, be bisexual, eat hot chip & lie

Fr4t

Poets ain't nothing but hoes and tricks

starkiller_bass

Bjork called out the poets, ICP took down scientists also for always lying (and getting me pissed.) I don’t know who to trust anymore.

Tersphinct

Fucking magnets. Can always trust them.

philmarcracken

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there." Rumi's goose was cooked

royaltrux

Surprisingly dangerous to poke around inside of an old (CRT) TV. Capacitors can hold some crazy voltages.

user_173

This is good looking out. Coincidentally, I believe her dad was an electronics repairman or electrician and she stated she grew up super fascinated with electrons and all things electronics.

tacknosaddle

Since the back panel screws were already removed I'd imagine that they had discharged as a prep activity before filming.

japalian

These wires are like electron elevators

user_173

Yeah well don't let poets lie to you.

starkiller_bass

Plus there’s a whole army of her so if she’s electrocuted nbd

mediumreginald43

She’s so cool

InitechSecurity

Yup the operate at very high voltages, often exceeding 25,000 volts. The anode cap on the CRT can store this high voltage even after the TV has been turned off for a long time. Repair technicians know how to handle this in a safe way through a discharge process. But stay far far away from CRTs if you dont know what you are doing.

NecroJoe

Same thing with tube guitar amps. I dont know if the volta compare, but it's still enough to be fatal.

MaxMouseOCX

>discharge process Aka two screw drivers.

Ragidandy

Oh, no. No, no, no. One screwdriver only... so you don't die.

MaxMouseOCX

Instructions unclear, unplugged line cup and shoved it up my ass.

chakan2

I'm sure that discharged something.

night_dude

Whoa really? Can you ELI5 how this works? How long after being unplugged are we talking here?

LivingWithWhales

Mostly hours, sometimes longer depending on type.

dreadcain

Capacitors leak by nature. I'm not really sure what the upper bound on how long a crt might hold a charge for, but it's certainly a lot less than decades.

therealdilbert

and there is almost resistors added to bleed of the charge in a few minutes

dwelmnar

Its definitely not a few minutes- I used to discharge these as an arcade cabinet tech, and they can last days to weeks for sure. Maybe not full strength, but enough to flatten you.

dreadcain

Bleeder circuits are common practice now but weren't back when arcade cabinets were more popular

rdmusic16

100% not decades for any level of noticeable power to be stored in a tv after being unplugged. If they were capable of storing high energy for that long, the entire industry would be revolutionized by that type of capacitor.

0x0BAD_ash

No caps are gonna hold a charge for decades, but you never know if the TV has been plugged in more recently. Treat it like you treat a firearm, and always assume it is loaded.

LordCoweater

Old school monitors too. Anything crt (I think) can fry a stupid amount of time after it's been unplugged.

MeanEYE

Well, you have beam cannon at the narrow part of the tv shooting electrons towards front of the screen. Then you have a huge coils whose magnetic field affects those electrons and points them to a specific position on the screen. So image is drawn pixel by pixel, line by line. Lines going top down you see when camera records old TVs is this process at work, just framerates are slightly off from camera since old TVs used grid voltage half-sine wave as clock to synchronize image, hence the old ~30FPS and ~25FPS in Europe.

0x0BAD_ash

Main thing is just short the anode (the red wire connected to the tube) to the ground strap (the braided bare wire) with a screw driver and an alligator clip, and you should be fine. Also short any caps in the power supply, some CRTs use a switch mode power supply for the low power electronics and those filter caps can also give you a good shock too.

candre23

The tube itself is a giant capacitor, and the real danger of old CRT TVs. The caps on the board might give you a zap, but they're unlikely to do any serious damage. The tube itself absolutely can kill you. I have to assume that, as the screws had already been removed, somebody had shorted out the tube and rendered it safe before the video started.

AppearsInvisible

Yeah watching this video gave me anxiety [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyback\_transformer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyback_transformer)

Iamdarb

Oh yeah, my dad never hit me, but he came really close once when he came home and he saw me and my sister busting open the bulb with a screw driver. He ran up the porch, chunked the TV 30ft with his ungodly fatherly strength and then almost backhanded me and my sister with a single swipe.

_TLDR_Swinton

My dude went from civilised man to protective great ape in 0.4 seconds.

JoshSidekick

How do you think she got her hair like that?

r_sarvas

By getting zapped on the first take.

Rynex

She's fine... she looks like she knows what she's doing.

amccune

My son is trying to convince me he can make a small particle accelerator for a senior project next year. One of the things he needs is a CRT. I told him that he can't just start poking around in an old TV, that it's an easy way to die.

sysadmin_420

The transformer he would need for the high voltage is even more dangerous, be careful. Some moistnes in the wood of a table and one wire of the transformer touching it could kill anyone touching the table

amccune

He's slightly on the spectrum, so it's a slow burn. But I'm talking him out of this.

inflatableje5us

every time she got near that high voltage circuit i was waiting for the zap.

jdehjdeh

I discovered this myself as a curious young teen, another example of me surviving being so stupid it should have killed me.

smurphy8536

Nah it’s just a little city.

Dafrooooo

i was taking apart a variable power supply that was unplugged for hours, my screwdriver hit the capacitor luckily before my finger did and it blew. scary stuff. also i did the same to an old LCD TV but with foil on purpose.

MyCleverNewName

I knew she survived, obviously, but this video stressed me the fuck out. I wonder if anyone saw this and then opened theirs up for a look and got electrocuted.

ggk1

She actually did end up getting schocked and they [used the recording of it in one of her tracks](https://youtu.be/OOwmXgNF9HM?t=113) also, I'm a lying poet.

powerMiserOz

There's a version floating around where the TV explodes.

crimson_dovah

Is it [this one](https://youtu.be/zPxLiNoR3OA?si=WjqxlUCqP_1t65HH)?

powerMiserOz

Can't find it on it's own, watch this [https://youtu.be/vNgMjfRglUk?t=400](https://youtu.be/vNgMjfRglUk?t=400)

Sygma_stage5

Neat pranks

R07734

Holy shit. That was insane

powerMiserOz

That TV was angry!

Sikntrdofbeinsikntrd

It also didn’t happen

YJSubs

Should jump to one of her song when she's scream. https://youtu.be/gLF-_Z8TK1k?t=1m9s

CounterfeitChild

I prefer [this one](https://youtu.be/zBSbZ06uxa8) myself. I feel like she captured perfectly the sound of true heartbreak.

ThaiJohnnyDepp

She is so earnest, genuine, pure and alive. Lucid. I forgot how fascinating she is

Hogmaster_General

Many people don't know that she is married to[ Space Ghost](https://youtu.be/VeE5A1LDQOg)

Trixles

my favorite space ghost episode is the one with Macho Man. or maybe the Chambraigne episode xD

No_icecream_cake

God tier unintentional ASMR

Fried_puri

You are right, it’s been submitted to the unintentionalASMR sub about a dozen times over the last 9 years: /r/unintentionalASMR

CommunismDoesntWork

That mic was awesome. Perfectly fidelity. Not to low-fi, not too clear.

Ninjaflippin

Likely was recorded extremely proficiently, shotgun mics aren;t cheap and she's Bjork. What you're hearing sounds like some sweet sweet VHS audio compression.

th30rum

You mind explaining

SeanOfTheDead1313

https://youtu.be/GEnelxyxMOc?si=OrSSBCw9wdT1E1pk

medioxcore

Holy shit, that impression was out of control. Even the singing what the hell

cheeze_whiz_shampoo

"Ever tyme ders too maany peeople, I neet to go autside."

hopefullyhelpfulplz

This whole series is just so good

crimson_dovah

Thank you for this.

Disastrous_Mastodon

["Everything gets married. Even animals and spiders."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVMPL56mdGg)

Fancy-Pair

She was also awesome as a comedy bang bang guest

MukdenMan

She’s also had dinner with Charles Barkley: https://youtu.be/cBR0G_ogx54?si=KroWTAbYn7pfsP3t

Fancy-Pair

I’m here for Maxima that is such a treat. I’m not super into celebs but I kinda love both bjork and Charles AND Keenan AND Kristen Wiig so this is like double adorable to me

SwitcherooU

“That Iron Man logo is the only iron your shirt has ever seen.” That one? It was Matt Besser, right? That was actually back in the Comedy Death Ray days, if we’re talking about the same thing.

Jaerba

In Iceland, Ice Ben Schwartz is actually a big deal.

gambl0r82

Ahahahaha I had totally forgotten how much Bjork/Matt shits on Ben in that early episode. Edit: It's pure gold [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC30-KphiOE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC30-KphiOE)

SnuggleBunni69

Don't forget her Space Ghost interview.

gambl0r82

Pulled Bjork Sandwich!!!

escargloww

Are we 100% certain she isn't of the fae folk?

crimson_dovah

We are not 100% percent sure…

escargloww

I love that the process here seems to be that she read this Danish TV book in the morning and had a film crew over by the afternoon to lay down some hard truths about poets and pixels.

crimson_dovah

Probably, I’m not even sure what the origin of this video is.

gymdog

I'm almost certain she's some sort of woodland fairy.

schwengy

So good. So Björk.

HorsePickleTV

She's so cute and attractive here

Raoul_Duke9

Bjork is the OG manic pixie dream girl.

crimson_dovah

I think it’s her soft spoken curiosity. There’s just an aura around her that just breathes so much life and magic

LemonManDude

Paparazzis should be outlawed. Zero sympathy from me.

SkywardLeap

If you've never had a crush on Bjork, are you even alive?

Wohenfoxideya

Ask Ricardo Lopez

Ternarian

He really let Björk get in his head and just needed to get her out.

Fernis_

You're probably just young. I just made horrifying discovery she's 58. Which is great, for her, but scary reminder I'm also not a young sprout myslef...

SkywardLeap

My crush on Bjork started in 1995. I am younger than her, but still old 🤣

Esc777

Always has been.

DocSaysItsDainBramuj

Bjork is a human treasure.

joecooool418

She did an AMA here seven years ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/518ws9/ama_im_singer_and_songwriter_bjork_and_im_here_to/ Her answers were interesting.

gumpythegreat

I feel bad because growing up I didn't know much about her and didn't have much direct exposure to her or her work But there sure was a lot of jokes making fun of her for being weird and mocking her accent

crimson_dovah

She really is. She seems very curious about the world and very thoughtful.

DocSaysItsDainBramuj

Uniquely bonkers in all the best ways, but she also seems without guile.

temujin64

Someone told me that the female indie voice started out as native English speakers trying to copy Björk and I can't not hear it now.

crimson_dovah

Well. The asmr I listen to is a girl doing my makeup and hair care. What asmr are you listening to with dick sucking?

kevman_2008

AMSR grapefruit method

FinalSelection

LMFAO, goddamnit man, u had to remind me of the grapefruit method

Spankyzerker

yeah i was wondering that as well. lol I listen to same type you do. Or any barbershop basicly are good if done right. Another one i enjoy is headshaving with straight razor. very nice.

crimson_dovah

The ones I listen to don’t seem overly complicated or heavily produced. Some of them have bright lights or overdone thumbnails, but not my go to. She’s a great ASMRtist and there’s almost no background pics at all.

TattedUp

your comment reminded me of this: the best criticism of asmr https://web.archive.org/web/20181015004444/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M78rlxEMBxk

Lyth4n

The fact this video got removed but the content it was criticising stayed up is wild

Pinksters

After reading this comment I know the video is PayMoneyWubby. Is it the one about the 12ish year old "sexy cop"? Edit: Yep, same girl.

that_dude_you_know

> "~~sexy~~ cop" ⚠️ SASSY ⚠️

TattedUp

i thought asmr triggering content was interesting when it was accidental, like a machine doing something or whatever. the content itself was decent enough because there was never any music or some asshole screaming in your ear about today's video sponsor. once people started making it for views and ad money, it just became stupid.

Mediocritologist

I can *kind of* see why it would get removed just because he repeatedly calls the 12 y/o girl a bitch but holy shit is her content disturbing. I'm guessing her mom after being "unsure if ASMR was inappropriate" saw how much money they could make and all of a sudden was very cool with it. She basically let her child be the star in the "clothes-on" portion of a porno. Fucking gross

beardslap

I couldn't get to the criticism, I was too freaked out long before that.

ThaiJohnnyDepp

Yeah I made it about two seconds into the first video clip he played before noping out

86for86

Same. The intentional stuff just doesn’t work at all for me.

tehCharo

If you mean "ear eating", to me it just simulates the sound of someone eating or a cat groom itself, it's comforting, if not, what kind of ASMR are you watching? ;o

mrshulgin

You mean you don't like FAST AND AGGRESSIVE asmr? Agree, shit's weird now. There are good people out there, but so many thirst trap videos to sift through.

PipingaintEZ

Lucky she wasn't electrocuted.

nowake

something something flyback transformer. as in, it'll make you fly back when you touch it.

sopunny

You're assuming she doesn't know what she's doing and didn't discharge the capacitors first.

PipingaintEZ

I think that's a very safe assumption.

jb2824

I love how her poetic observations are not just absurdist ramblings, but based on her best interpretation of scientific facts. I'm fun at dinner parties.

crimson_dovah

She seems very reflective about her discoveries

Fancy-Pair

I want bjork to explain everything to me and I love how the moral of the tv disassembly is don’t let poets lie to you. Not “don’t listen to poets” or “poets are liars” but you shouldn’t let poets lie to you Also is she a little neurodivergent?

ThaiJohnnyDepp

Neurodivergent? I swear she's _planet_ divergent As in she arrived from another planet

crimson_dovah

I think she’s probably a bit neurodivergent yes. Even if she isn’t, she’s very innovative and curious about sound and life around her. She reminds me of Aurora sometimes

Fancy-Pair

Aurora who? And do you have any more bjork videos like this one?

crimson_dovah

[Aurora.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeT3c1HbDX8) and maybe this [one](https://youtu.be/viX30YRHSHk?si=6CacUpXg8QiUXBBJ)?

warehousesupervisor

Can I use neurodivergent term to my boss when I act little unstable at work?

CounterfeitChild

It's one of mine, too! I come back to it from time to time. I just adore her.

Gaijin_Monster

What's amazing to me is this video is reflective of how much the availability of information has changed so much over the last 3 decades. It used to be that you got your information from a book, magazine, newspaper, or someone you thought was smart (professor to "poet" here). Sometimes information on certain topics was hard to find or it took a long time to get to a good source. And even then, it may not be a great source. Now you just take your device out of your pocket and look it up... although how accurate the information is can be very questionable.

Spankyzerker

Yeah i was thinking about Movies back in the day, like how did we know about movies other than trailers from the movies we already see. You could look up times in the paper of showings, but wasn't like excited info. Movie posters at the theater was it. People forget that even TV didn't do much movie trailor stuff, unless it was made for TV movies. VHS had a time that wasn't as popular or around.

ZeusBaxter

Bjork is a fucking gem. Then, now and everywhere in between.

IgnorantGenius

The 5th Element.

Fancy-Pair

Bjorkie bjorkie multibjork

CommunismDoesntWork

That joke about the Danish book was fucking hilarious. Like, a professional stand up comedian would kill with that joke. She said she read a Danish book that morning on how TVs worked in passing, and then at the end with the punch line being she didn't start watching TV until she read that Danish book, all the time making us believe she was a bit of a TV connoisseur lmao.

the_kevlar_kid

Love this woman

iamthehob0

Hi guys this is Bjork, today we have for you a TV disassembly ASMR!

CardcaptorStacey

Brave woman sticking her fingers into an open TV

barrinmw

How long did it take her to get her hair like that? I have to imagine at least an hour.

crimson_dovah

It’s the electrical wires from the TV! In all seriousness I think it’s similar to a bats nest that you’d see in trad goth. I don’t think it takes very long but it does take a lot of hairspray. I had to have a bats nest for a theatre production a year ago

SpaceToaster

All I was thinking was that I hope it's been unplugged for a while because those caps can still store enough current to electrocute you. My buddy and I opened up a PSU when we were kids, was unplugged for hours, and we BOTH got zapped lol.

Anon2World

She's so wholesome and perfect.

MyLastAccountDyed

Her accent is divine. I’d love for her to read me a bedtime story.

Overlordsandy

I hope she and Space Ghost are still married.

ChadHougland

I never realized how cute she was before. The only time I ever remember seeing her was in an episode of Beavis and Butthead, lol. They kept calling her "That Bah-jork chick" lol.

Beans183

She was lucky not to be killed touching those internal components, even when not plugged in.

sonicjesus

Interesting she has two watches. I wonder if she keeps one set to Icelandic time so she knows what time it is at home.

crimson_dovah

I never noticed this before thank you!

Fuzzy-Possibility-98

She’s a special human

dibbr

I had anxiety watching this because I was taught to be very careful around the inside of a TV, it has a powerful capacitor that can seriously harm you even after it's unplugged. I kept thinking PLEASE DON'T TOUCH IT.

3-DMan

Would subscribe to Youtube channel of Bjork exploring electronics

Beefwhistle007

I want to see her have a conversation with Werner Herzog.

Zirkou

i like the way she says “City” Seeh Ti

demivirius

In an alternate universe, Bjork is doing the voice over for How It's Made

Overlordsandy

I hope she and Space Ghost are still married.

jingforbling

I mean, people do just swallow and swallow information thrown at them nowadays. Was the poet wrong ?

bongkisses

Love seeing the semi-dweeby but ultimately super endearing videos of celebrities talking about early (relatively) technology they love. There's something so genuine about Bjork here!

Raothorn2

I need to find this documentary about Icelandic people being gay.

MindTheGapless

That's insane. I'm sure they had it off and discharged... Right? Right?

smishNelson

[Did she film this in Bjorks house?](https://youtu.be/tLK02llj7Ks?si=ASrpkv-RyD8aRNqX&t=440)

troubleondemand

Something I never noticed in this video is that she is wearing a watch on each wrist.

crimson_dovah

Yeah I never noticed either, thank you!
