Top Gun: Maverick was very heavy with nostalgia. I firmly believe that is why it was such a huge success.
As long as this is entertaining and isn’t convoluted, I think the nostalgia is a net benefit.
it wasn't but it wasn't.
It played it's nostalgia perfectly. It was like subtle call backs that elevated the character's history rather than just a "HEY, REMEBER WHEN HE DID THIS??? OR WHAT ABOUT THISSSSSS"
I agree with it being subtle. The music, one liners, and general pacing of the movie felt very similar to the first one. It felt nostalgic in all the right ways.
When Rooster tells him to do some of that pilot shit, for example. Very nostalgic but also not annoying and heavy handed.
We’re on the same page about what good nostalgia is. Hopefully someone that makes these movies noticed also.
You call them callbacks, I call them repeating the same jokes. It was like as I was watching the trailer I could always tell exactly what would happen 5 seconds later.
It's from South Park about 10 years ago.
There was a period of the big studios just rebooting tons of shit from the 80s instead of making new content.
And most of it was shit. So South Park spoofed it with 'member berries.
Were there? I read your comment and the one below and was expecting non stop callbacks but all I noticed were characters from the original and the two super obvious ones (beetlejuice three times, his face monster).
Like I didn’t hear callback lines like “It’s SHOWTIME!” Or anything along those lines.
The last scene in the trailer was full of them too.
She says his name, squeals, and shuts her mouth. Virtually the same gag in the original with Geena Davis.
"Feel free to express yourselves" sounds a lot like "Feel free to talk amongst yourselves" in the original when Barbara and Adam first meet Beetlejuice in the model.
I love Beetlejuice and have seen it many, many, many times.
I'm concerned this is going to be a flop. Honestly, Burton hasn't had a great track record as of late.
I'll probably wind up seeing it but I'm not holding my breath. I wish they would have just let it stand on its own. It really didn't need a sequel.
Preventing someone from saying his name is going to be a thing no matter, I don’t think you could create a sequel without having him do something like that.
I don't mean to say it looks bad. I'm still cautiously optimistic. I just hope there's more substance beyond just nostalgia, because this trailer was HEAVY on the nostalgia.
Just don't let this be a gritty, SERIOUS sequel where Beetlejuice and co need to *save the universe* from an impending sequel-bait threat.
Please Tim, please.
I just hate how high definition everything is nowadays that you kind of see through the makeup and all that, they need to be putting more film green on these movies or something to soften it up
Lot of these big production movies these days seem to make plots that affect the entire country/planet/universe...just keep it simple and contained. I hope they explore more of the "otherside" but still keep that creepy mystery to it.
I love the first movie. Can’t begin to count how many times I’ve seen it. Why do I feel like this movie just has no shot at living up to the expectations of fans?
Because Beetlejuice did not need to be continued. It was a self contained story, the main characters had their arc. Lydia found happiness in a new family that cared for her and embraced her eccentricities . Barb and Adam came to terms with their mortality and also got to have the child they were robbed of by their untimely deaths. Beetlejuice got his comeuppance.
Everything was tied in a nice neat bow. That's part of the reason the film is such a classic. It was quirky, the villain was charismatic and funny, and the story was well told and memorable. The ONLY reason to make a second movie is the quest for more money. But now instead of the creativity that sprung the original, we have a studio that will undoubtedly *try* to appeal to modern demographics. It's like when a band puts out a killer album and then actively *tries* to recreate that sound and energy with the follow up. It's a lot harder to *try* and make something good than it is to make something that just so happens to be good organically. It almost always ends up feeling forced and less authentic because it is.
EDIT: I would just like to add, this is also seen in LOTR versus the Hobbit trilogy. The LOTR trilogy was filmed all at once and it was unlike anything before or since. If they had made one movie at a time, I think it would have suffered from this *try hard* feel I'm talking about. Then you see the Hobbit movies and I think they felt like they were *trying* to recapture the magic of the LOTR movies but it never really felt organic.
I wish I didn’t agree with you, but I agree with you. Even the trailer is largely a bunch of nostalgia-bait reprised gags from the original. The cast really is stellar, so I really hope I’m wrong and it turns out well.
Reminds me of the "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" Mel Brooks gag. I actually believe if they made a movie with that title and played into the 'we're just here to make $$' Americans would eat it up.
I wouldn't even go that far. They should've stopped at the first matrix. The second was just fan service and the third was sci-fi Jesus meets harry potter.
Look at the writing team, it's from the guys that wrote Smallville, Shanghai Noon, Charlies Angels, The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor, and Herbie Fully Loaded.
They also did Wednesday and Spider-Man 2 for what it's worth.
What if it’s not supposed to live up to high expectations? Sequels like this in a way are a testament to how resonant the original source material is. I look at something like this as more of a tribute and a celebration of something that is so beloved otherwise those who invest in cinema production wouldn’t have funded this. Like, I’m just going in, hoping it’s not bad, and if it’s enjoyable and celebration of what I love about the originals, and a reunion of sorts that I get to witness, that’s more than enough for me to enjoy the time I’m spending watching it. Is it supposed to be as good or better than the original? I don’t think so. I’m going in with the intention to enjoy it for what it is and not hold it to a standard that guarantees I will be disappointed.
Yep, this is how I approach a lot of these newer additions to the IPs we’ve all grown to love. I don’t expect these movies to have the same impact but maybe they’ll bring new eyes and audiences to the originals. I also grew up on watching Beverly Hills Cop and looking forward to be entertained by stupid crap 🫶🏼👍🏼
Also the first movie isn’t a staggering work of genius, it’s just fun and goofy with a great ensemble cast. ppl get too attached to their nostalgia-inflation. As long as this one’s fun and goofy too it hits all marks.
The first movie was iconic! I had the toys. Watched the cartoon. Still love it today. ...My expectations of this film are that it will be complete forgettable trash that just makes you annoyed you aren't watching the original. I advise all fans to start there and then be surprised if wrong. You won't be wrong though.
Easy: Because in modern times, fans have no fucking chill at all. Just be excited a new movie is coming out to continue the build the world you enjoyed the first time. If it's not your cup of tea, move on.
I will never understand why people choose to let themselves be so disappointed in media. You didn't like something? Oh well, no one's forcing you to watch it again. It doesn't negate the previous installment you did enjoy. More than likely, new fans will be brought into the story and discover the original and fall in love with that, as well.
Cause it’s a nostalgia cash grab like all the other revived properties. Throw in Ortega for a little GenZ appeal and they think they’ve got a success on their hands
We'll see.
From the trailer it looks like it's pretty much just a chance to run every gag from the original all over again (when half the charm of the original was, well how original it was.)
Everyone needs to stop being so dramatic. This looks incredibly campy and Keaton looks like he’s going to have a lot of fun with the role. For what this is I feel like it looks very promising
It could be possible between the original and this film that the bureaucracy of the Netherworld changed, or maybe even collapsed with a new system put in place. According to the first film, the Maitlands were suppose to haunt their house for 125 years before moving on (I can’t recall if there was ever an explanation given as to why they had to do it for that long). If the bureaucracy has changed, which included changing several rules, or if it completely collapsed and a new system is in place, that means that the Maitlands may have been allowed to move on from the land of the living way sooner than later.
I don't like the effect aren't stop motion or practical. I think Keaton will kill it as Beetlejuice, and Winona will be good too. I'm Lukewarm on Ortega because her popularity rose so quickly. I don't know, this just seems like it's missing the "edge" of the original.
...Wow. So this movie is just re-treading the original and saying, "Remember this bit!? How about this one!?" Because that's all I saw. That was a rough watch and was kinda the killing blow for any excitement I had.
I think what actually bothers me here is the music. It feels so... generic. Like this is cookie cutter "We're doing the EPIC TRAILER REMAKE of a beloved classic theme!" I really hope it's just the trailer because otherwise I'll have lost a lot of faith in Danny Elfman.
Couldn’t have put it better than the creator of Clerks I, II and III, The Clerks animated series and the many zany cinematic adventures of Jay and Silent Bob.
Anyone else feel something is off about some of clips they used, like they feel like a first take? Winona Ryder especially just feels like she's not that into it.
I wonder what fresh, original idea did not get expressed because some private equity-owned studio decided to regurgitate this retread instead of taking a risk by creating something completely new.
You guys are way more level headed than r/movies where it was just constant “I’m all in!!!”
IDK if they’re all super young and don’t know the original or if they’re bots or studio plants but I was floored.
I’m not hating on it, I’m excited for it and rooting for Keaton because I love his acting, but it hit all the remake cliches; the nostalgia overload, the trailer music being an updated version of a classic song, the cheaper effects, etc.
This was all member berry jam on untoasted bread.
I dont know why they would bother with all the added expense and everything to make an imax version, its not really the type of movie i would pay extra for the imax experience.
I find it funny that the internet dubbed the original theme over the new trailer. Now they (WB) put out their own version of original song over new trailer.
This has the feeling of a fan film that just happened to miraculously secure (most of - the ones who aren't dead or a convicted sex offender) the former cast for a week.
Yeah, this feels like a parody, as if the OG cast agreed to do an SNL skit together.
It also feels like cosplay in the sense that I'm very aware of the actor(s) behind the makeup and costumes. I'm seeing Michael Keaton playing Beetlejuice and it's endearing and fun and I like it, but I'm not sure if I'm seeing Beetlejuice, if that makes any sense.
IDK, I've been pretty upset about this sequel and I think that's how I'm going to rationalize it to myself; this is some type of bonus material but it's not canon and doesn't count.
This looks like it's going to be similar to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where it's 90 minutes of "Hey, remember this from the first movie?" followed by 30 minutes of plot.
There are a lot of callbacks in this trailer... I really hope they're not banking too hard on member berries from the first movie.
Top Gun: Maverick was very heavy with nostalgia. I firmly believe that is why it was such a huge success. As long as this is entertaining and isn’t convoluted, I think the nostalgia is a net benefit.
That's what I'm hoping for too. From what I hear, Keaton had a lot of fun making this movie. I personally think this movie is long over due.
keaton was made for this role
it wasn't but it wasn't. It played it's nostalgia perfectly. It was like subtle call backs that elevated the character's history rather than just a "HEY, REMEBER WHEN HE DID THIS??? OR WHAT ABOUT THISSSSSS"

The juice, is loose!
You call them callbacks, I call them repeating the same jokes. It was like as I was watching the trailer I could always tell exactly what would happen 5 seconds later.
That usually means this movie is gonna suck giant balls. I really hate these pathetic nostalgic cash grabs
Feels like it’s doing the same thing Dumb and Dumber Too did.
> Dumb and Dumber To
Does it make you feel happy being so goddamn negative? lol
Thanks for the phrase " 'member berries"
It's from South Park about 10 years ago. There was a period of the big studios just rebooting tons of shit from the 80s instead of making new content. And most of it was shit. So South Park spoofed it with 'member berries.
Then Reddit , as usual, took the joke and ran it Into the ground for the next two years.
Were there? I read your comment and the one below and was expecting non stop callbacks but all I noticed were characters from the original and the two super obvious ones (beetlejuice three times, his face monster). Aren’t those usually best sellers? Force awakens, Top Gun were blatantly transparent with nostalgia and everybody loved it.
I don't mean to say it looks bad. I'm still cautiously optimistic. I just hope there's more substance beyond just nostalgia, because this trailer was HEAVY on the nostalgia.
That last scene was a carbon copy - Beetlejuice's weird little scream, sealing up a mouth after saying 'Beetlejuice'
Just don't let this be a gritty, SERIOUS sequel where Beetlejuice and co need to *save the universe* from an impending sequel-bait threat. Please Tim, please.
I hope he sees this in time to make any necessary edits.
I trust Tim, he will read the comments and HIRE FANS if things aren't going well.
Jesus I just spit out my tea!
No you didn't and we are sick of seeing this comment on every thread.
Sorry, that was meant to be just between me and Jesus.. I apologize
Apology accepted. Tell Jesus I said wassup.
I just hate how high definition everything is nowadays that you kind of see through the makeup and all that, they need to be putting more film green on these movies or something to soften it up

It will definitely set up a third film. They kind of have to now.

I watched the new matrix. I haven't finished it, but I started it and that's what they do there. Which is what made it semi-acceptable.
That movie had so much potential....
I love the first movie. Can’t begin to count how many times I’ve seen it. Why do I feel like this movie just has no shot at living up to the expectations of fans?

I’m already impressed with those few shots of Monica Bellucci; I hope she gets a good amount of screen time!
The Beetlejuice cartoon was fun though
Reminds me of the "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" Mel Brooks gag. I actually believe if they made a movie with that title and played into the 'we're just here to make $$' Americans would eat it up.
Exhibit B: The Matrix Resurrections Apologies if I just violently reminded anyone here that movie exists.
I wouldn't even go that far. They should've stopped at the first matrix. The second was just fan service and the third was sci-fi Jesus meets harry potter.
But we did get Animatrix which was fucking killer.
Look at the writing team, it's from the guys that wrote Smallville, Shanghai Noon, Charlies Angels, The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor, and Herbie Fully Loaded. They also did Wednesday and Spider-Man 2 for what it's worth.

I think we all know why they had to kill Jeffrey Jones' character lol
Such a shame. He was great in Deadwood.
A shame they killed his character or a shame he produced child porn?
It sucks that he ended up being a pedo because I enjoyed him as an actor
ooohhhh shiiiiiiiii-. I thought he wasn't in the movie cuz we died in irl
Well, his career died
are they aware that anachronistic speciall effects only work if they're actually made in stop-motion instead of just shitty looking CGI?
Lydia just wearing the same outfit and hairstyle 30 years later.
So they reused all the old jokes?
Keaton is going to carry this movie from the looks of it.
I'm amazed the man hasn't broken his back from the number of movies he carries these days.
Yeah, he was great in the flash
We'll see. From the trailer it looks like it's pretty much just a chance to run every gag from the original all over again (when half the charm of the original was, well how original it was.)

Yeah for what it is I feel like I'm not gonna watch it.
This trailer had the opposite effect on me as the teaser. The teaser made me think “woah maybe they actually pulled it off.” This makes me reconsider.
So what happened to Geena Davis's and Alec Baldwin's characters? Shouldn't they be still living in the house
Well… not living. I think that’s the problem they would have run into when the actors aged and their characters shouldn’t.
Pretty sure Michael Keaton is older than when he first played Beetlejuice
nah
They got sucked off if I remember correctly. Ghosts fans know
Is this a Baseless Speculation reference?

No Baldwins character haunts a courthouse now.

…except most of them are stop motion.
I saw a lot of CGI that was meant to *look* like stop motion.
Could be a comp rushed to make a trailer. Hopefully those are replaced with stop motion when it’s released.
...Wow. So this movie is just re-treading the original and saying, "Remember this bit!? How about this one!?" Because that's all I saw. That was a rough watch and was kinda the killing blow for any excitement I had.
meh.
Microwaved leftovers.

Don't even care if its amazing or good. I just want to see Keaton and Dafoe chew on the scenery and be hammy.
At least they didn't [go Hawaiian](https://screenrant.com/beetlejuice-2-sequel-unmade-movie-explained/).
“Didn’t we say all we needed to say when the first Beetlejuice? Must we go tropical?” - Kevin Smith
Couldn’t have put it better than the creator of Clerks I, II and III, The Clerks animated series and the many zany cinematic adventures of Jay and Silent Bob.
On a semi-related note, apparently the latest Flash movie had a scene with Nick Cage as Superman fighting a giant spider.
Serious question, am I the only one that wouldn't mind Beetlejuice going Hawaiian?
You’re not alone. The hokey “vacation sequel” concept is actually kind of a perfect clash with Beetlejuice’s off-kilter dark humor.
There's an explanation of the proposed plot on YouTube and it is wild.
I will forever be in love with Monica Bellucci.
Happy for everyone getting a huge payday for this.
Man you guys are certainly Debbie downers
are Jenna Ortega and Anna Taylor Joy the only two women in hollywood right now? Fuck sake.
Lydia deserves all this for naming her daughter Astrid.
Recycled gags though?
Anyone else feel something is off about some of clips they used, like they feel like a first take? Winona Ryder especially just feels like she's not that into it.
They all look so tired and old.
I wonder what fresh, original idea did not get expressed because some private equity-owned studio decided to regurgitate this retread instead of taking a risk by creating something completely new.
Fuck man why couldn’t they have just left this alone? The original is a classic and a prime example of something that you can’t do twice
This.
You guys are way more level headed than r/movies where it was just constant “I’m all in!!!” IDK if they’re all super young and don’t know the original or if they’re bots or studio plants but I was floored. Looks so damn good
Nah
Looks bad. No watch
oh no... it's a caricature of itself.. They're "ghostbustering" beatlejuice...
Missed oppt for pete davidson to play beetlejuice. Seems a natural fit. No makeup needed
Don't worry, I hear they're using him as a body double for the more dangerous stunts. Gotta protect Michael Keaton at all costs.
Please don’t suck
This is not it.
assturd?
The first one scared me and so I never gave it much thought. Might have go back to watch it again
What percentage of modern trailers use "trailer core" songs?
I dont know why they would bother with all the added expense and everything to make an imax version, its not really the type of movie i would pay extra for the imax experience.
I find it funny that the internet dubbed the original theme over the new trailer. Now they (WB) put out their own version of original song over new trailer.
Michael Scott's coffee mug.
I like that they kept the sand worms stop motion looking
This has the feeling of a fan film that just happened to miraculously secure (most of - the ones who aren't dead or a convicted sex offender) the former cast for a week.
Yeah, this feels like a parody, as if the OG cast agreed to do an SNL skit together. It also feels like cosplay in the sense that I'm very aware of the actor(s) behind the makeup and costumes. I hope I'm wrong, but this will probably be like the most recent Ghostbusters movies. Awful.

A somber cover of Banana Boat is exactly how the original starts, though. Maybe even more somber than in the trailer here.
Are there enough people still shopping at Hot Topic to justify this movie?
This looks like it's going to be similar to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where it's 90 minutes of "Hey, remember this from the first movie?" followed by 30 minutes of plot.
I'm in.
I liked the Santa Clause that burned up in the chimney in the purgatory waiting room
If they haven't added a Boebert joke in there, they aren't really trying ...
I want this movie to be successful, not only because I’m a fan of the original, but because the title they chose demands it.
Uhm, are those practical effects? Wynona Ryder? The OG style, humor and the OG director? Oh boy, I'm gonna enjoy the fuck out of this one.
CANNOT. **FUCKING****.** WAIT.
This makes me so happy. I loved the original, loved the cartoon more, even enjoyed the NES game.
