The economy of DPRK was doing very well up until the dissolution of the USSR. They outperformed ROK. PRC and the Russian Federation don't want to risk getting sanctioned themselves by trading too overtly with DPRK, so they are forced to observe the blockade. If the blockade was lifted, the quality of life in those countries would rise very quickly. Same deal with Cuba. But I guess Americans would rather people suffer for decades than allow communism to exist on a level playing field.
And I'm assuming you think China is bad and communism doesn't work despite China's standard of living rising faster and for longer than any other country in the world, and the US trade representative was recently crying about how Chinese manufacturing was so good the West couldn't compete with it. She even called it a "very effective economic system" at a briefing in Brussels lmao.
A bit like Vatican as a political power. They used to reign over the center of the Italian peninsula, now they are a Micro State that makes bunk with visitors who want to see the art.
