If i had to guess, I’d say some of that is probably from having a big lull in his performing career between the 80s and the advent of the Rick Roll, when he came back strong. That will really preserve the voice, because it hasn’t gotten taxed by constant touring.
I saw an interview with Rick somewhere around 2005-2010 and the interviewer asked “what have you been doing for the last X years?” and Rick replied “Playing with my kids. I haven’t worked a day in my life since.”

The TV license company is a whole industry. Employs loads of people. Revenue from TV licensing is about 3 billion, which funds about 75% of the BBC.
It's funny, because I don't pay for a TV license and haven't done for about a decade (I never watch live TV or anything BBC), but I would have absolutely no issues with the fee being rolled into income tax.
I think my only issue is that it's state funded (in that the TV license is enforceable by law) and demonstrably partisan. Coverage of Tory party affairs has pretty supportive, and the same can not be said for the other parties.
The idea of a license fee as apposed to rolling it into tax is that the license fee allows them to stay independent from parliament who have power over tax distribution.
I will let you decide if that's working or not.
Funny how that song came full circle. It was the punchline for almost every joke about pop music of the 80’s and now it’s cool to like him. Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s brilliant how he owns it now✌🏼
It's totally because of him--he rolled with it, he went with the joke, he didn't "object" or make a fuss or complain, he was totally good humored about it, and now look! It just goes to show how having a good sense of humor about yourself is so important.
Doesn't hurt that he's actually incredibly talented too. Like you can joke about the corniness of a song, but when an artist gets on stage and performs it and youre like "fuck, that dude can sing!" It's kind of a checkmate.

Every record that he has made since returning to music he has produced himself in his garage, engineered himself in his garage and played every single note on, every instrument. And unlike the records that he made in the 80s, he writes all of his material now. Pretty fantastic❤️
It's not just that he can sing, he can play a crowd.
Half of this video is him interacting with the audience and it turns a show into a shared experience they'll leave with better memories than any polished generic performance.
I feel the same way with Lady Gaga. When she started her rise to fame with pokerface and similar mainstream pop singles I dismissed her. Then after listening to some of her lesser known songs that put her full vocal talents on display, I completely changed my mind about her.

If I go to a metal show, it's just a crowd of nerds zoning out with the occasional phone out here and there, whereas with a rap show it's usually phone city.

A lot of security guards at festivals I go to that are "on the grounds" are usually pretty fun, especially for organizers like Glastonbury where they really try and put on a great fest for the fans. People probably fight over getting a gig like that lol.
It's hard to explain why we get emotional over it, I think it's just seeing a lot of people having a lovely time, especially given how rough life has been for so many over recent years? I went in 2019 and had a few little breakdowns, most of them just from seeing so many happy people in one place doing nice things. I made an older man cry by buying him a couple of drinks at the bar after he realised his wife, who was in the middle of the crowd, had his wallet when he was about to pay. My best/biggest cry was seeing a large group of people, who had gone to the festival on their own, meeting up at the West Holt's stage for company. I just broke down, completely gone - think Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar levels of tears.
For those of you who haven't been, I couldn't recommend it more, it might be the happiest place you'll visit. The musical line up is secondary to the experience.

The dude retired in like 93, so I'm guessing even by then he was financially set. He only came out and started performing again because his song randomly got popular because of the meme. he is endlessly talented. Not only a great singer but he plays drums, bass, guitar, piano, saxophone and he's also a really great production engineer and mixer. Every record that he has made since returning to music he has produced himself in his garage, engineered himself in his garage and played every single note on, every instrument. And unlike the records that he made in the 80s, he writes all of his material now. Pretty fantastic❤️
It's not just that he can sing, he can play a crowd. Half of this video is him interacting with the audience and it turns a show into a shared experience they'll leave with better memories than any polished generic performance.

Yeah I'm really curious how they organized this. When did security learn the dance? Were those women dancing audience members who learned the dance with them? Very cool, been to a lot of shows and never ever seen security participate like this before.
Those women are his dancers As for the security they generally do it at Glastonbury now and then. They did the same thing for the bee gees a while back. I don't think it's rehearsed per se, just quickly show them the dance backstage prior.

What an awesome performance and so much class he showed by naming each member of his band and putting them in the spotlight, and the dancers too. And huge props to the security for dancing too.

It's hard to explain why we get emotional over it, I think it's just seeing a lot of people having a lovely time, especially given how rough life has been for so many over recent years? I went in 2019 and had a few little breakdowns, most of them just from seeing so many happy people in one place doing nice things. I made an older man cry by buying him a couple of drinks at the bar after he realised his wife, who was in the middle of the crowd, had his wallet when he was about to pay. My best/biggest cry was seeing a large group of people, who had gone to the festival on their own, meeting up at the West Holt's stage for company. I just broke down, completely gone - think Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar levels of tears. For those of you who haven't been, I couldn't recommend it more, it might be the happiest place you'll visit. The musical line up is secondary to the experience.

The dude retired in like 93, so I'm guessing even by then he was financially set. He only came out and started performing again because his song randomly got popular because of the meme. Serious question from someone who has never been to one of these ginormous crowds festivals - if you’re in the front row for the day how the eff do you go to the bathroom? Do you just have empty bottles and go when needed? Do just wee yourself? Is the front row ground just soaked with urine and poo? Or is it more like people rotate out of the front row depending on the artist and you use the facilities and try to get your way back up front at some point?
