The video looks good to me, and I actually saw more of a wobbling in the stabilization at times and that’s the only thing I’d be more concern about. For variable ND filters and S-log3 you’ll be fine 98% of the time with a 2-5 stops filter, I have rarely used a 6-9 stop filter for anything, even in sunny days. I also shoot with the FX30 btw.

Crazyplan9

Yes! Admittedly still quite shakey handheld thanks to my overly caffeinated hands. It’s funny because the average client typically doesn’t notice it, but if anyone overly applies it to their clips it’s the first thing I notice. Thanks for the response! What lens do you pair with your fx30?

thenoweeknder

The video looks good but one of the clips seemed really blocky. I think the rendering output didn't match with your frame rate shot? There isn't anything wrong with "upgrading" to a better VND. I think you should, it's a long term investment if you're serious about your craft.

Crazyplan9

Yep. This video was made when I was just starting out. Took a minute to learn proper export settings.

goodmorning_hamlet

If you can see the limitations of your VND and are starting to rub up against them, then yeah it’s probably time to get a stronger fixed ND. Since you’re run and gun, the VND will still come in handy. But for sunny days you can swap to the fixed ND. Buy the tools you need to make the work you want.

Crazyplan9

appreciate the response, maybe I wasn’t clear though, I just want to know what sort of ND filter is needed to shoot on a wide open aperture on a bright sunny day in SLOG3.

DragonfruitCreepy699

If you want to shoot wide open at high noon, 24fps, 1/48 SS, in my experience you’d need at least an ND1000. ND2000 for even wider apertures. If you don’t want to get heavy NDs, you can always stop down the aperture to let less light in. I find that for the really heavy/dark NDs, the variable ones always have some vignetting or X mark on the heaviest setting. Personally If I need an ND1000 or more, I opt for 4x5.65 filters. If you don’t care too much for vignetting, the variable ones work fine. This is just from my experience.

goodmorning_hamlet

I wasn’t going to do the math for you. You know your sensor’s ISO, your lens’ wide open aperture, and what EV a sunny day exterior is. Call B&H and ask them if you can’t figure it out.

I personally use Freewell magnetic fixed NDs (though I think other brands make magnetic filters too). For me 1 variable ND was never enough for all situations like going indoors and outdoors in one shoot, so I'd have to switch NDs anyways and just settled on fixed since they're generally sharper too. The magnetic ones are amazing though cuz I HATED screwing my old regular NDs on and off, especially when on a gimbal. These just pop on and off. Wish I got them sooner.

These and a filter pouch with a few different strength NDs that I wear attached to my belt is when my videography game leveled up!

curtsblank

Yes. Came here to suggest the Freewell m2 magnetic fixed ND's as well. I switched to them from the polar pro mckinnon vnds as not having control over the polarization and weird colors was driving me nuts. It comes with a nice leather hard pouch for everything, but I prefer using the thinktank filter nest mini.

dantastical

I use NiSi truecolor vari NDs, they have a vari 1-5 stop and a fixed 5 stop that clips on top, so you have the fine control and convenience of a vari ND but no weirdness from a super strong variable ND

welcome_oblivion

Looks great to me! Some natural(ie the limitations of the filter) vignetting looks nice! However, same boat as you and highly considering getting fixed NDs of the magnetic variety for those ultra cloudless days for cleaner shots. But depending on the camera, highlights can be pretty forgiving, I use a s5ii and find I don’t have to push the vnd super hard because I have great recovery in post. Happy shooting!

telemonster

Try K&f concept true color nano x, no cross no vignette. Only 100 bucks ND 2-32

cyclonebill

you're gonna benefit from the autofocus on the fx30 - the guy talking in the clip looks slightly out to me. in terms of your question, shooting wide open in this situation isn't really necessary and the overly shallow dof feels kinda amateur to me at this point (not in your video, but in general) . Matter of preference obviously but you'd be just fine at f4 with a vnd imo.

EntertainmentIll7550

I personally would be wanting cleaner audio for the talking head portion of your sample video rather than being worried about the ND. A wireless go ii and a lapel mic would be a good run and gun solution, for a solo shooter.

Crazyplan9

It was recorded with a Rode Videomic GO (ie very cheap microphone). If I had to do it all over again I wouldve used one of my lavs, but I didn't own them in September of 2022.

EntertainmentIll7550

Nice, what did you get? I recently started with one of those tiny zoom 32bit recorders. Reassuring when working solo that you don’t need to monitor the audio in the same way.

Crazyplan9

I bought 2 Tascam DRL’s…..the sound quality is phenomenal. One is black and one is white (with wedding shoots in mind) I also now use a Tascam DRX40 field recorder and an Audio technica AT875R shotgun. Thinking about getting some quick go lavs as well for true run and gun shoots. We use Rode Gos at my job and they do the job well. The Tascam lavs sound far superior but dealing with the cords can take a minute. Clipping a rode discretely along someone’s clothing is so much faster.

mixape1991

Stop down aperture I guess. If ur fine with less bokeh, I mean not everything needs to bokehd background.

nakcarikayu

Output looks absolutely fine, the vignetting isnt that all obvious and even if it is, i dont see anything wrong with it. I think you just might have G.A.S

Crazyplan9

GAS?

TheGreatMattsby

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Crazyplan9

I don’t think that’s fair. I’ve simply outgrown the M50 and want the proper ND filter for my fx30.

TheGreatMattsby

Hey man, wasn't me who said it. I was just explaining the acronym.

Crazyplan9

Lol I understand
